Seller How-To: Finding Your Etsy Niche

So you’re a seller on Etsy. You’re trying to get your name out there and be noticed. However, standing out in the crowd of enormously talented sellers and the wide variety of high-quality items is no easy feat.  In fact, it can be daunting. How do you make your work seem different than everything else that’s already out there?

Let’s talk about finding your “niche” at Etsy and running a shop that has your distinct stamp of individuality.

Developing a unique style and approach with your shop is the best way to successfully carve out a niche for yourself. You know the items that are immediately recognizable as a certain seller’s handiwork? That’s what I’m talking about. These sellers have found their niche by cultivating a style that is immediately recognizable.

Finding your Etsy niche implies not replicating what the shop next door is doing just so you can sell. It means you have to be creative, experiment with the craft you know how to do well, and define your own personal universe so that it shows in your shop and items.


Elsita is an ideal example of someone who has quickly and successfully found her niche at Etsy. Her shop has a variety of different items: dolls, jewelry, illustrations, sculptures — yet all are marked with her individual Elsita-style brand and blend harmoniously in her shop. Result? A neatly carved Elsita niche! “Success should never be a goal,” Elsita says. “Success is always the result of something else, which in my opinion is:

1. Do what you know how to do and try to do it the best you can.

2. Be yourself, use your own unique universe as a source of inspiration.

3. Don’t get used to the same thing; have fun, explore and try something different.”

Elsita’s way of exploring and defining her personal universe is through her sketchbooks and notebooks.


“My favorite one is called ‘Elsa against Asle.’ (Elsa is my name and Asle is my name spelled backwards.) This book is all about exploring ‘Asle,’ which is the part of me that I never get to know enough. Anytime I try something new in my art I get to know a part of me that it is less obvious.”  


Another successful seller with a unique sense of style is Kreativlink, who is based in Austria. Kreativlink’s handmade journals and sketchbooks have a distinctive and inimitable quality, and are easily recognizable on Etsy as…well, Kreativlink! She says, “Finding a free niche at Etsy? Almost impossible. But finding your style, that’s the thing! Don’t think whether something will sell or not. Don’t look at what others do or what others sell. Just concentrate on your thing. Experiment. Make it over. Try different materials or techniques. Go bold and crazy! Don’t think about customers, make it just for YOU. Exactly the way YOU like it. You will come up with something you truly love and it will reflect your personality and your ideas. And that’s what people like to buy here on Etsy. They do not only buy a notebook, for example. That’s available at each supermarket, and probably less expensive than what I make. What they buy is my personality, my ideas, my dreams and yeah — my journals!”


Other sellers successfully find their niche by focusing on something that is close to them, so that creating is an enjoyment. Heli of helis is a talented artist based in Turkey, and despite her many skills in various mediums (painting, drawing, ceramics, knitting, crochet, papier-mâché…you name it!), she has found her Etsy niche by dedicating her shop items to an endearing “superhero” character and the character’s friends. Helis says, “This character (and her friends) are close to my heart, and I enjoy thinking about what she will do next. This character is easy to add to different kinds of items (T-shirts, dolls, paintings, prints…maybe later small bags or pouches). There are so many possibilities with her and her friends. The ‘family’ is growing and can grow to eternity.”  


“For me, the important things [to cultivate] in my products are distinctiveness, good quality materials and good customer service. I sketch a lot and let my imagination fly free. I don’t try to [make an] item that would sell a lot or is trendy. I make what gives me joy and will hopefully put a smile on my customers’ face.”

Let your imagination fly free. Discover your personal universe. Experiment in the craft that you do well, or learn a new one and add your own individual flavor. Try to think outside the box and not do exactly what you were taught or what you see others do. Put your stamp on your items, photographs and product descriptions, and keep it consistent. Before you know it, your item listings will be easily recognizable as “yours” and you will have successfully found your own Etsy niche!

You will come up with something you truly love and it will reflect your personality and your ideas. And that’s what people like to buy here on Etsy." When I opened my shop, I knew I had to make exactly what I would love -- what I DO love -- and not try to cater to what I think customers would want. It may be riskier ... but it is a very true and comfortable place to be in.

For example tortillagirl says...do what you do best and do it for yourself and then on the other hand it says try something different.     this article was just what I was looking for. I have been on etsy for about 2 months or so now and have not had a sale and it makes me think that no one likes what I make, it doesn't seem to appeal to people. But I liked my designs and the finished pieces and really don't understand why others don't see what I see in them. LOL elitist artist or arrogant artist in me I guess. I am still trying to fit in and have some new items to post soon, items that I think reflect even more of what I'm about. I am working to make my shop more consistant as well by being a little more consistant with my pictures and the backgrounds, etc. if anyone has more advice for me and other newbies, I know I'd love to have someone come critique my shop. thanks for the great article, I'm glad I found it as it has re-inspired me to do everything I want to make and create and not worry about it, well maybe worry just a little bit when nothing sells.

    I've just read down a very long list of shop names and stopped in on a great many of them here, especially ones that said they were new, to see for myself how long they have been open and how many sales they have had in that time, and what kinds of niches are doing well here. I have been open only a little more than two weeks and am guessing that putting your shop name out here is also good exposure as others may come along behind me and click on my shop too ... I am wondering if my medicine bundles are just too different for mainstream but I want to keep making them so there ya go! Be Well.

    I get what you are saying...I love making bottle cap charms and to be honest, I didn't think I would probably sell any of those next to my other items. I just opened my store and that was 1 of the first things I sold! You do have to craft for your self and not think about "well, that's not going to sell." When you do that you fail...you have to remember fist and for most this is not about money...it is about enjoying crafting and just simply getting to show your ideas off. Great article!

The problem i am finding on etsy is the really huge amount of items (few visits to my shop). Most people who can see and touch my handmade jewels are enthusiastic.     Several others have written about the experience that I had with my first try with Etsy. I let all of my entries lapse because I got no response whatsoever. I do fiber and bead work that are very similar in design concept and everyone who knows my work talks about how readily identifiable it is. Most of my really creative work is fairly high end price wise. I spend so much time and use fine materials that I cannot have lower prices. I tried doing some lower priced items that still have my unique design aesthetic but these did not attract attention. I have an introduction that explains my work. However, I have found that none of my work was picked up by anyone at Etsy that sends out emails telling of interesting new work. I'm going to start up my Etsy shop again soon. I did get some advice from other Etsians that I should only list one item a day so that my shop shows up frequently in new listings. I feel that my shop has a very unusual but easily remembered name. Unless I see some income coming in I cannot participate in the showcases which I feel are quite expensive for a one day shot. Showcases should be at least for several days or a week.     This was great advice. I just joined Etsy and am learning more everyday. There's so much to know and so many wonderful artists, it is a bit overwhelming. With so many sites its difficult to imagine how anyone will even find me! I do have a question about the guides... why do some shops show up many times before the first time mine does? Any suggestions for becoming more visible would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks so much to everyone who has found inspiration in my article and for taking the the time to convo me or comment about it. Keep experimenting in your craft and stay creative! If you are still searching for your niche keep defining your personal aesthetic through ways that work for you: making collages, photographing objects spontaneously, keeping notebooks...there are tons of different ways and some work better for others. Make what your instincts tell you to make instead of looking at what everyone else is doing (it's harder to fit into a niche if someone else is already in it!). When you find your own niche, you'll feel so comfortable in it you'll know that you've found it.

    Thank you for reminding us newbees to trust in our creativity. Being in the corporate world starts to shut down the creative processes and it's difficult to let the creative side of your brain relax when it's been pushed in a corner for so long. People keep telling me "you could sell to big stores - and make a pile of money". I'm on Etsy because I don't want to do production work. I think the variety of my collection and the materials I get to play with speak to my overall style. I looked at my store they other day and asked - "do these items reflect my personnal taste and do I really want to keep them for myself"? The answer was, YES - that makes me feel good about what I'm doing, even if no one buys anything. Making things is just something a have to do - selling on ETSY justifies my need to buy more materials!

    I love your support on going into your creative self and allowing the work to come from that place. It is difficult to calculate your own niche since no one else ever thinks exactly the way you do. It seems if you are true to yourself and personalize the advice you get (from Etsy and other places) your niche will evolve out of your own center. What do you think?

    Great article! I'm a newbie and kinda proud of it. Some pieces look similar. I believe this is where the difference may lie. I find myself lost trying to describe my pieces. I want to get in my own zone and just start story telling, but then my mind clicks back into reality and I wonder...are people going to think im on drugs? Standing out is a good thing!!     That was great advice for a new seller. I've had a storefront in Loon Lake for 16 years and have a quite 'distinct' style. I am really excited about the prospect of a wider audience. I've thrown away items that I've made simply because I didn't like them and some friends actually have gone into my trash to retrieve them. But being a Virgo, I'm a tad picky.     Great article, everything I do i do for myself and I love every single piece - the only jewellery that isnt mine is the jewelery someone asks me to make for them, their preference so to speak... I have always been this way. Having studied illustration and design at University I understand the "make what you love" approach, I dont think you would be very happy if you didnt after all I believe it is a natural creative tendancy anyway. Oh yes you can copy stuff but would you be happy doing that? Whilst at Uni we were encouraged to look at how painters developed their painting and to copy a painting ie, a van gough, then were asked to paint a self portrait in the style of the artist we had originally chosen to copy. this was a great learning curve because from this your own ideas and styles emerge. Artist love to be together to encourage and inspire so to do Etsians and we do learn and get ideas from each other and are truy inspired. sorry for going on so. izadora118@etsy.com

    Wow! This article changed my whole outlook. I am new to etsy and have been trying to figure out what sells. My husband has been out of work for 7 months now so that has been my focus (we need some income). I love scrapbooking and making cards but lately it has been a chore.     Thankyou for taking the time to write this......I am new here, however I have been slowly creating products and ideas from the heart since a job loss 2 years ago. With each new idea/drawing/painting I ask family what they think and for the most part they have really liked it, but there have been some comments on expanding and appealing to a wider range of people since I suppose " it isn't everyones cup of tea" as one said......I guess they thought/think I have narrowed interest with what I do. With even the small amount of comments like that I have second guessed myself and have tried to step out of "my box" to find myself in uncomfortable and frustrating territory....it just isn't me, it doesn't feel right.....so thankyou for the encouragement to stay with what is in my heart and the subject that I love to draw/paint for others to enjoy.

    I totally agree with this article. A unique niche is hard to come by - either since it's already occupied, or a unique idea you might have can be either impractical or not within ones own specialty. But putting your own spin, stamp, or style on even well-trodden ideas is golden. It's what really lets us be expressive. Your final thoughts on customer service are well taken as well. Who doesn't want repeat-customers?!

    I have had an account for awhile now and I just started about a week ago to post items. I am a artist first because that is what has made me a success in my professional life and in my own business. I also have collected a huge assortment of goods over the last 15 years that I have added into my portfolio the mass treasures of jewelry components that others seek out. When Etsy began its launch I was happy to hear of a new venue that gave artists a platform so that they could reach out to others around the world. The growth of Etsy over the years has given me such inspiration and courage to further my own trade and my craft. It is easy to become distracted by so many beautiful items on Etsy and lose confidence - I've been there. But hey inspiration is given to be used, we've got to trust it and let it show.     What a great article! It took me a long time to learn the truth of what you are saying - make something YOU enjoy! I ran an unsuccessful knitting business for 8 years, trying to bend over backwards to figure out what my customers wanted. And, as a result, I didn't even wear my own sweaters, simply because I didn't like them. No wonder I couldn't sell them! And, then, one day, I just made a simple black mohair sweater for myself, and everywhere I went, people were commenting and wanting it. So simple! And, it took me so long to learn...

    This makes all the inspirational difference in the world! The reason I was attracted to selling on Etsy was because I didn't want to get stuck tailoring my items to retailers and their niches. I wanted to do my own thing, but then I got on Etsy and was like, "OMG, I have to find out what's selling on here and make that cuz there's so much competition!" I'm so glad I read this before I followed through with that thought! THanks for this and all the other great resources and info! Like!
