Starting a blog can be a little intimidating. Where should you start one? What should you write about? How do you get people to read your blog? I popped over to the Etsy Forums to gather tips from some Etsy bloggers. I knew I would find nuggets of blogging wisdom to share, and I was not let down. Read on to hear the Etsy community’s tips, plus some of my own!

Getting Started
Recycledideas says: I chose Blogger.com because it’s free and requires no familiarity whatsoever with HTML, which is perfect for me; although I like learning new languages, I really have no interest in talking to computers in their language. http://newfoundlandnews.blogspot.com
I like Blogger, too. It’s free and pretty user friendly. Some other popular blog publishers are: Typepad, LiveJournal, and WordPress. You’re going to need to choose a layout, and if you don’t know html, these publishers have templates for you to choose from. You can also search for free layouts on the internet or hire a designer to create something original for your blog. There are even some blog designs you can purchase from Etsy graphic artists!
When thinking about naming your blog …
elanknits says: Have your blog name the same as your shop or brand name so you’re easier to find. http://elanknits.blogspot.com
Many Etsians preferred simple designs, without too much flair. A lot of bells and whistles can drive away your readers.
fenrislorsrai says: Many folks read at work and nothing will get you off their reading list faster than music announcing that they are slacking at work! If you want to have a music player, set it to play only when someone clicks on it.
http://fenris-lorsrai.livejournal.com
Once you have your blog set up …
melsdolls says: The first thing any new blogger should do is claim their blog on Technorati. Technorati is the largest directory for blogs, and having a presence there is essential to your blog’s success. http://pinkcrabcreations.blogspot.com
and…
poshdoodles says: My tip is for those who use Blogger to try Google’s free analytics tool: http://www.google.com/analytics.
It can tell you:
- How long people stay at your blog. (If they only stay a few seconds, you may need to rethink your approach.)
- How people find your blog — where they come from and what keywords they’re using, so you can see what promotional sites work best for you.
- What entries people are reading.
And loads more. If you are keen to promote and expand your business, stats really help. http://poshdoodles.blogspot.com

Creating Interesting Posts
I think most Etsians in our forums discussion would agree that your blog should not just be about the work you sell. If we wanted to read that, we would just have a look at your shop! Your blog is a place where you can connect on a personal level with your readers (and potential customers).
Write about your process, your inspiration, your favorite restaurant, your exciting family news.
Stockton says: Blog about your work and the things that inspire you … but also write about others’ work! Not only does it make your blog more interesting, but it draws in a bigger readership as you start linking to other sites and blogs. http://www.stocktonandco.com/blog
(Stockton features this button for TorontoCraftAlert.com on her blog.)
melissakate says: Mention Willie Nelson and Taxes
That brought a lot of viewers my way!
T-shirt design by HonkyTonkTees
InkspotWorkshop says: I like coming up with weekly features; this way I can anticipate topics each week. For example, I have a weekly feature called iCANDY, where I feature my favorite Etsy sellers. I also have a feature called Bespoke Corner, where I feature different custom work, not necessarily every week, but definitely each month. http://inkspotworkshopblog.blogspot.com
LittlePaperDog says: Show work in progress. I love seeing how people create such amazing stuff. http://LittlePaperDog.blogspot.com
LittlePaperDog working on her tea towels
lookmamamadeit says: People LOVE tutorials and are always searching for them. If you can make and post a tutorial or two, and name it and tag it properly, it will keep bringing traffic to your blog. All kinds of tutorials, I guess!
As on Etsy, try to be original, professional, and to have good texts and photos. I advise non-English native speakers, like me, to try to blog both in your language and in English, and to use a good spelling tool.
http://ameninabrinca.blogspot.com
notagoose says: Have contests. People LOVE contests. Honestly, I’m sure there are legalities involved that you may want to look into, but I’d just do these random contests for piddly prizes and people flocked. For example, I’d have people design banners for my site, then post them and have people vote on their favorite. The ones who made submissions would invariably post a link to my blog on their site begging their readers to come vote for them, and those people would end up subscribing to my site.
EyePopArt says: Try a poll now and then! I just posted one on mine at http://eyepopart.blogspot.com
SunshineandRavioli says: I would suggest posting lots of good pictures. I prefer blogs with lots of eye candy, and I’m sure I’m not alone … more great pictures, less words. There are too many great blogs out there to visit to be able to spend 20 minutes reading one post. http://sunshinenravioli.blogspot.com

Staying Motivated
larsandaddie says: I carry my camera with me almost everywhere — having pictures to post keeps me motivated to update. http://larsandaddie.blogspot.com
This is a great tip! In addition, if you have a Flickr account, set up the “Post to Blog” function. This motivates me to blog more. I upload a photo and then can easily create a blog post with it.
Diffraction says: Chances are you won’t feel like blogging every single day, but you must really have a new post for your readers. So on the days you are feeling very productive, schedule two or three days in advance. This feature is available on most blogging platforms and enables you to take a breather if you need it, without letting down your readers.
dif-fraction.blogspot.com
TotusMel says: I’ve made blogging part of my morning routine so it’s never hard to do. http://totusmel.blogspot.com
tizzalicious says: I stay motivated by having a few theme days, like on Sunday I feature a Cute Craftster of The Week, an Etsian with a shop full of cuteness. I also stay motivated from the nice comments I get (ask questions in your posts!) and from seeing how many visitors I had on my stats. http://blog.tizzalicious.com
talkproof, one of tizzalicious‘s “Cute Crafter of the Week”
Building a Readership
DirtySanchez says: My best advice is to be a blogger, not a crafter who has a blog. My blog has been going for well over six years now, and it covers everything — family, work, beekeeping, soapmaking, random inspirations, the whole nine yards. To gain and keep a readership, the blog needs to be interesting for everyone, not just other crafters.
susansheehan says: Put your blog link in your shop announcement, in all email signatures and on forum signatures. Join blog rings or collective groups. Can’t find one? Start one of your own. I started flaminghot.wordpress.com as a way to get flameworkers blogging and provide a way to generate traffic to their sites.
TheBrassHussy says: My best blogging tip is not about your own blog, but to find other blogs that interest you and comment on them. The blog owner will probably check your profile out and could buy from you or include you on their blog. Which I think is a great way to bring in traffic to your blog.
sewbettie says: To gain readership, participate in the blog community. I try to visit about ten new blogs a week and leave a comment. They almost always come check out my blog and I come across new ideas, inspiration, and resources. You can find new blogs on the Etsy Forums or by clicking the blog links on your favorite blogs. http://craftyourselfrich.blogspot.com
That happens to be my very favorite blogging tip (I give it often!): Participate on other blogs. For more blogging inspiration, check out TeenAngster’s series on the Storque — News from the Craft & Style Blogosphere.
RenewedResources says: I am using Scoutle and Entrecard to help bring in folks to my blog. http://etsysupplyshoppe.blogspot.com
There were a few mentions of Entrecard, which I had never heard of! Great tip!
I hope these ideas motivate you to get started blogging or to update your blog today! If you have any additional tips (or questions) please post them in the comments below.

Amazing guide Danielle! I've had my blog for over 2 years now, and the most important thing I've learned is that there is always something new to learn. There are some great tips in there that I haven't tried, and I'm definitely going to experiment with!

Excellent tips! I've discovered that finding something unique about myself that connects me to my crafts is a great angle for blogging. Great article! I've been blogging for a couple of years now and love it! I try to strike a good balance between personal things and my artwork. As a blog reader, I do not like being constantly sold to and I don't like too many gimicks (it reminds me of infomercials). If you don't offer something beyond your product and your sales, I probably won't stick around and read. Also blogger peeps - please make sure you set your comments so that you don't have to have a gmail or blogger account to comment. Happy blogging! Blogging is rad. It really connects you to your fans (and customers). I started blogging about my hat studio & remodelling it in February '08. Cool - I think it helps to make your blog look consistent with your shop too - and if you use blogger, it's really easy to add the shop code etsy provides for a direct link to your shop! Thanks for a very informative article! I have a blog which I started this year - to 'get with it' - but it is more of a mini journal with short stories. So I have broken many 'blogging' rules (I suspected the least) - but it works for me - and if I am the only one reading it at least I enjoy gazing at all the beautiful photos.... again and again ... and yet again... Though I do force my family to read thru it - I am sure they speed read and miss many facts which I consider important and relevant. www.dragonhouseofyuen.blogspot.com www.sadtohappystory.blogspot.com

Nicely laid out! I've met a lot of wonderful new people through my blog, and although it's a LOT of work, really enjoy the process of writing and networking. It has not brought in new sales to my Etsy store, which was one of the reasons I started it and that has been disappointing, but maybe in time it will. I started in April, so it hasn't seen a Holiday season or a full year yet. One thing on the translation tools that are out there- I had a comment left by someone the other day that was very hard to understand. I went to her blog- she was in Singapore, if I remember correctly, and her whole blog was in this garbled English. I'm sure she was using a translation tool, as were many of the people leaving comments. Maybe a whole new language will come out of it! I like having Etsy artists on as guest writers (focus on fiber art), so if interested in getting some visibility, let me know! http://fiberfocus.blogspot.com/

Very nice advice, I think it’s a good idea to have a giveaway or contest on your blog. But you don’t want to lose contact with those readers. I recommend setting up a subscribe to yours newsletter form, This way you can keep in touch with them and send them special offers, you will get more traffic from the giveaway and even more sales from the newsletter.

Lots of good tips and new ideas there. Thanks! I created my Etsy shop and a blog at the same time. The idea was to show closeup of my work in process, my inspiration and also write about other designers who's work I find inspirational. I find it fascinating seeing how other designers work. Often in can be even more interesting, than the final product! Seeing designers work process also makes your potential customers more interested in you and your product. It creates a human interest and when they like you, they will like and buy your product too. http://www.fashionsaboteur.blogspot.com

Wow, this has been sooo helpful. I am so exited now about blogging. I have been blogging for a while but not as a marketing tool (I wanted to wait till I opened my shop with Etsy) but now I am ready to really go for it and I havn't really known where to start (up until now of course!). I havn't got lots of money to spend on advertising - like most businesses starting out but this has shown me that a little bit of effort can go a long way. I think the main thing for me to remember is CONSISTENCY and the tip from Diffraction about creating extra blog posts and saving them for days when you aren't really in the mood or don't have time is a great idea! In addition to my beaded jewelry passion, I am an avid reader of contemporary literary fiction, crazy about cats, knowledgeable about flower gardening, a freelance copyeditor, and interested in a range of questions of social interest. Can you combine all of this in one blog or is it better to have a craft-focused blog. Also, how much time do you need to spend DAILY to maintain a good and interesting blog?

Excellent! I love what DirtySanchez says: My best advice is to be a blogger, not a crafter who has a blog. My blog has been going for well over six years now, and it covers everything — family, work, beekeeping, soapmaking, random inspirations, the whole nine yards. To gain and keep a readership, the blog needs to be interesting for everyone, not just other crafters. This is going to be the year that I include my crafting in my blog. I have had a gardening blog for more than three years now and really it's about time I include a little more.

The Blog Frog (http://theblogfrog.com/) is also a great place to commune with other bloggers - join their communities - start your own and build friendships. It draws new readership to your site and....it's FREE!!! I think too - if you highlight other artists or other great finds on Etsy - like my This 'n' That features or my Seller Saturday's - make it fun and meaningful...but also - let those artists know. They can send out link to friends and family - post it on their blog, and often times are willing to tweet or facebook it! If people don't know where the views are coming from on their items - they can't thank you or help spread the news!! I also have added a MckLinky (http://kidgiddy.blogspot.com/2010/01/im-blogger-youre-blogger-wouldnt-you.html) This is a great way to start your own "blog ring" as was mentioned in the article but I didn't see a link. You can add your CRAFT BLOG CENTRAL link here and then start your own MckLinky. Another great linking site is: http://www.blenza.com/linkies/ (also called Mister Linkies Magicall Widgets) Thanks, Kerry

i'm on wordpress and there are different pluses and minuses to each of the free blogs, unfortunately you can't really know how they will affect you until you actually get into blogging and decide what you want to do. i initially chose word press because it allowed me to set up pages in the right column that acted like a traditional website so that i could categorize my work in different sections (like on Etsy). my blog is http://jimgottuso.wordpress.com the most important things i've learned are post often, be yourself and include photos. people will not sit there and read pages of text without photos and if you make things at least you have things to take photos of. the most difficult thing to do is to garner traffic and it's a bit different than how you get traffic within etsy. in a word... comment. you most certainly have to go to other blogs and comment. this takes quite a while to do and you have to comment in a way that makes it clear that you read the post. if your comments are interesting and frequent enough, the other bloggers will follow your blog and their followers will come to your blog. if you set up a blog and then go about your business, your traffic will not significantly increase because no one knows it's there.

I try to put a little of everything on my blog. Sometimes it is just interesting tidbits that relate to my product (My favorite was my blog post on "The history of sleeves!") Sometimes about recent projects ("Memorial Sweater") Sometimes it is about my process or art topics ("Colors of the season") and sometimes it is more personal. I also post information that I can refer my customers to ("How to do a custom order") Seems to be working so far! - And of course it is posted in my announcement.

Mamamadeit's right about the tutorials. I first found her shop and blog by searching for tutorials on Google. Does it make sense also to tell folks how much time it really takes to run a blog? I had a blog before I had an Etsy shop, and it took several hours a day to get it where I wanted it. If I spend as much time blogging as I'd like to, I'd never make anything for my shop.

I matched my blog backgrounds and banner to my website and to my blog's banner backgrounds here at Etsy. People really want to KNOW the artist: how we look, where we live, how we think, where and how we create and they love little tips and tricks for creating things themselves. It's fun and we learn as much as the person reading our blog. Lucy

Definitely some things I wasn't aware of in there. So far, I've got two features that run regularly and I intend on adding at least 2 giveaways a month in which one would be an interview from another shop and one would be for my pieces. I also want to have tutorials and recipes and a spot dedicated to me and my life. Sounds vain perhaps, but my pieces are nothing without me...:) What I REALLY think is a good idea is to really plan your time for this. Blog networking takes time and you can spend HOURS doing it. If you have a timer going, at least you know when to stop and you can then focus on your shop too! http://gifteddesigns.blogspot.com

Interesting. Entrecard and Scoutle are both new tools for me. They both look good. A critique I have for blog designs: Lately I have seen a lot of bloggers use ornate, gorgeous skins on their blogs. They look cool when you first get to the blog, but I have found many of them quite distracting, especially if the skin is static and the text moves. That even makes me dizzy! I find clean templates much more appealing. Remember that many of us are getting older and being on the computer a lot is really hard on the eyes. Yes, young Etsians... Just wait until you turn 40! Light text on a dark background is also hard to read. We are all learning and we can keep on mutating until we find the right platform! www.fiberfocus.blogspot.com

I blog, but I don't want to blog just about my jewelry design, my Etsy shop, and the stuff I make. What I'd really like is for Etsy to have a more social interface so you could "post" what you want to about your work *within* the Etsy site. That way, everyone wouldn't have to step outside Etsy to a feed reader just to see all their Etsy favorites' latest news. That said, this is a great post and there will always be stuff to learn! :) Thanks!

If you're a seller, google your Etsy shop- chances are you'll find your items featured in other Etsy seller's blogs. When I was first starting up my store, this was so thrilling and I was extremely thankful to those bloggers who were promoting me! When I double checked the numbers via Craft Cult's Heartomatic (http://www.craftcult.com/heartomatic.php) it was obvious that those items featured in blogs had dramatically more views and hearts. Recently I started my own blog (http://paisleyfacevintage.blogspot.com/) and can't wait to feature Etsy items and sellers that I love! writing when you are in the mood is best so using the edit feature allows you to write quite a few posts at the same sitting.I often upload photos for each new post and save them and write just a bit,the start of a story or idea and then save the post. It is easier to get started the next time you decide to post, you just have to finish it as you already have the pics done and the idea there.

I believe it is just more sources of traffic. It is easier for the search engined to find your content in a blog than on etsy. When they send out there web crawlers they read unique content of sites and when they read etsy they are reading etsy content not your stores content. I have also heard that if you buy the domain for the name of your store and redirect it to go strait to your etsy page you will get more traffic as well. These are things that I have been trying but haven't been doing long enough to let you know how successful they are. My new blog is http://pengulosh.blogspot.com it has been up for two weeks now.

Wow great post! What I love about Blogger.com is that actually it allows the print-out (if you want to print the webpages) to have the same layout like how the pages look on screen. I mean with Wordpress and others when you try to print the pages, the layout changes. Thanks for other wonderful info too! :-)))

amretasgraphics says:
oh sorry another quick addition to my earlier post: the printout with the same on-screen layout works really well (with blogger.com) especially if your blog features so much graphic like mine http://www.amretasgraphicsblog.com that's how I really heart blogger.com :-)))

I try to blog 2-3 times each week and post about Etsy crafters, crafting friends, I feature a local shop each month, and run a monthly contest for a "kimberleeannkreations" product. It is fun to come up with new and creative topics. I also change the pictures of my products frequently to keep a fresh look to my site. Anyone interested in checking out my blog may go to www.kimberleeannkreations.blogspot.com.

I would suggest, in addition to all of these helpful tips, that you always proofread your posts. Writing clearly and correctly makes the quality of your blog much better, because you come across as knowledgeable and interesting. A misused "there" or the wrong "two" can throw your reader off, and you want to avoid being redundant if you want them to be interested, so a quick read-through before hitting "post" can make a big impact. Maybe I'm nitpicky, but as a person who reads a LOT of blogs, I can tell you that the ones I frequent have a unique voice and a clear style. I'm working on a little grammar guide on my blog at http://little-toil-of-love.blogspot.com

Thanks so much. I have just started a blog and have been wondering whether to stick to one topic or be varied. I keep changing my mind. You have convinced me to have several. I have probably made a big mistake though. I didn't give my blog the same name as the Etsy shop name (because I was going to vary topics). http://www.lorikorange.com/
