I love to see Etsy sellers sharing their skills! I caught a great Flickr photo tutorial by Etsy seller Paperama and I thought I would share her wisdom with you! Inspired by other Flickr members commenting on her beautiful photos, Paperama, responded with a handy photo-tutorial. Paperama uses Picnik, a web-based photo editing program that is very user-friendly. If you have a Flickr account you can access all your Flickr photos via Picnik, which can be convenient! If you don’t use Flickr, no worries; you can upload pics from your computer very easily. Follow this tutorial to find out how to make your photos bright and professional!
Step 1
→ Go to www.picnik.com
It’s a super cool free web-based photo editing service – you don’t even have to register!
→ Click on “Upload a photo” and choose the file you want to edit.
Step 2
After your upload is complete it should look like this.
→ Click on Exposure
Step 3
On the top several options appear – you can just play around a bit with
exposure and contrast, to see how it works. If you don’t like, it just
click on Reset.
If you drag the exposure to right, you’ll see that the complete image is getting brighter. Dragging contrast to the right, makes your lights and darks more intense.
→ Click on the Advanced Button to open additional options.
Step 4
If you want to brighten up the background/light colors drag the highlights bar to the right.
In the Histogram box you can see how the curves change. You can also
drag the shadows bar to edit the darker parts of your image.
Step 5
Use the Zoom funtion on the right bottom corner to see how the image looks close up.
→ Click OK if you’re happy with the results.
Step 6
→ Click on Save & Share in the top navigation.
Here you can choose a name for your new image file and edit dimensions, as well as the file format and compression quality.
→ Click on Save Photo to download the edited image to your computer.
Thanks for sharing Paperama! What a gem you are!

Hey Danielle. Nice tips. You can also do this if you subscribe to both Picnik and Flickr by choosing "edit photo" on an already-uploaded Flickr pic. The Picnik editor opens right within in Flickr. It is really nice and easy! Saves you time by saving your corrected image as a new Flickr image or just over the old one.

I use software that accompanied my camera and I have to say that being given the option to manipulate and otherwise dreary photo really makes all the difference in the quality. I love using crop and highlighting to really help the image to stand out. It sounds as if the picknic software achieves the same results...I highly recommend this for photo chalenged people!

I would also suggest checking out the "Sharpen" feature. Really helps when your hand isn't super steady during Macro shots. If you sign up for a free account and don't go through Flickr (rad idea!), you can upload five photos at once - much easier. Also, real quick, I upload from my camera directly to iPhoto (Mac) at full exposure. The files are huge, so, I then email them to myself at a lower res, drag them onto my desktop and go from there. There's probably a better way, but this is fast and easy.

As a new seller, I have been reading much of what more seasoned sellers have been kind enough to share. In a previous etsy storque, someone shared information on Picasa. Picasa is a software download from Google that helps you organize, edit, and share your photos. It's free, and easy to use: http://picasa.google.com/ I can attest to the fact that it is easy to download and very user friendly.

Picnik is one of the better free tools out there for editing. The actual Picnik site gives you more free options than the Flickr version does, so it's worth it to sign up on the site, even if you have a Flickr account (I love Flickr, by the way!)It's also really simple to use! I love photo editing (that's not weird, is it?...), but product shots are still not a strength. Picnik helps, check it out, if you haven't already.

Thank you a lot for your very useful information. I also would like to share my opinion with my fellow-etsians. When I make pictures of my items I like to play around with different backgrounds, different light sources, different angles, foreshortenings, points of view etc. Somebody will buy your item and you do not know what sort of light/background that buyer has at his/her house. Where he/she will set your item, - at the bedroom, dining room, office or kitchen, - every place has its own environment. May be it is important to show your potential buyer "the Thing" in different ways. Of cource, the picture's quality is the #1. I use Microsoft Picture Manager but I certainly will try Picnik. Thank you again.

I would love to see a step by step for those folks who have gray photos that are beautiful its so easy with one click in photoshop just click the autocolor or autotone under the "image" heading or in the "image" and "adjustment area" then "selective color" selecting the grey or white you can dial in or out how much gray to leave in the whites...voila! a perfect balanced photo. This is a wonderful alternative to the picnik and many or most of us have photoshop!! hope this helps...
