Back in January, we enabled Etsy sellers to access Google Analytics for their shops (see the announcement here). After seeing all the new accounts, the Google Analytics team has gotten in touch to share some resources on how to improve your store’s performance with Analytics. Please welcome our guest Sebastian Tonkin, Product Marketing Manager for Google Analytics…
What is Google Analytics?
Google Analytics is a free tool that shows you how visitors are interacting with your shop. It can help you do things like:
- See which of your items get the most visits.
- Identify where your traffic is coming from.
- Optimize your marketing and outreach activities.
- Find out which keywords on Etsy are sending you visitors.
How do I access my Google Analytics account?
You can enable this feature by going to Your Etsy > Shop Setup > Web Analytics. Or, if you are logged in you can find the link here. After a recent Etsy Virtual Lab, a recap was posted with a useful pdf for Etsy sellers. Visit the Etsy Web Analytics FAQ for Etsy-specific questions.
Resources for learning more:
There’s some great material out there about how to use Google Analytics to improve your shop’s performance. Here are some good places to get started:
- Google Analytics Blog – Advice and tutorials on how to use web Analytics to improve your business online. Back to basics posts happen every Monday.
- Youtube Channel – Videos showing how to do common types of analysis, such as the video embedded above.
- Help Forum – Get your analytics questions answered.
- Seminars for Success – Comprehensive, in-person training on beginner and experts analytics topics.
- GAIQ – Get certified in Analytics.
Share your knowledge:
If you are a seller with good tips, please share them in the comments.

GA is a great tool in many ways, one of which is that is gives you a list of keywords people searched for that lead them to your shop. Looking at these can help you with tagging your items. And sometimes they are really amusing.

Thanks for the links-- it took me a few days just to realize I needed to click on "view report" to see anything. And I'd agree with azurejoy about keywords-- my work is all fiber, and I had visits from keyword "toy dagger". Who knows?

StudioEleven11 says:
Hey guys. I don't think this is covered yet, but the Google Analytics integration Etsy uses skews the traffic sources report. Etsy.com and MyShop.Etsy.com are seen as the same site, so all traffic that comes from these sources, to Etsy, and then to you will be listed as coming to your site when in fact they went to Etsy.com FIRST, and then found you. This is important to know! I did a blog post explaining this further: http://studioeleven11.wordpress.com/2011/02/24/understanding-direct-traffic-to-your-etsy-shop-in-google-analytics/

Ok, so I'm looking at all the info GA has for me...now what? How am I on my end going to manipulate the trafic to my shop with this info? Key words that was used to get into my shop, was some tagging on particular items. I'm not going to use those same words again for different items...all this seems sooo over my head!! How exactly am I going to use this info?...
