Guest Curator: Erin Wylie of Time Out New York

Erin Wylie is the Seek editor at Time Out New York. Thanks to a childhood spent garage sale hopping, she’s grown up to be a thrifting and vintage junkie who can’t say no to homemade dresses or weird folk art. Although her friendship bracelet company folded at the tender age of 12, she’s not bitter and still crafts when she finds the time. Some recent projects include: dinosaur snow globes, shiny cat toys and embroidered linen napkins. Whether you’re a New York local, planning a visit, or just a city-lover, you can catch the summer in the city fever from Erin.

This summer you’ll find me biking, checking out flea markets, picnicking and exploring New York City’s green spaces. Here are my essential items for summer in the city!

Yellow, pink, orange and white fish scales retro two piece size M

This suit is so Gidget! I love the retro, not too skimpy cut, groovy pattern and the fact that it’s handmade in Brooklyn. I’d wear this while splashing around Coney Island or playing ping-pong at the new South Street Seaport Water Taxi Beach. By Felice, $95.

Summer Style

Here’s a simple style equation for you: this handmade tank + jeans = your new favorite outfit. Seriously, this will take you from brunch without ever looking schlubby or overdressed. Plus, I’m a big fan of New York designer Patricia Ayres’s art-meets-fashion creations. By artlab, $48.

DIY Dark Denim Grunge Jacket, Small

You gotta love the ‘80s bleach effect on this one. It’ll look pretty badass thrown over a sundress and, as you can see, it looks rad with jeans and a tee. I’d wear this when I’m going dancing at P.S. 1’s Warm Up. It also inspires me to attack my own old denim jacket with bleach. From leolucaescobar, $62.

Lilly – Couture Bicycle Streamers

These are like classy, adult versions of the streamers I had on my trike. In the summer I ride my bike everywhere — why not do it in style? These are handmade in Brooklyn, and that’s where you’ll find me and my bike: I often go to the Red Hook Ball Fields so I can chow down on amazing tacos, ceviche and watermelon juice. By CityStreamers, $22.

Cocoa Raffia Fedora Hat with Orange trim

Oh, excuse me, I was just tending to my lavender fields and bee apiary. That’s what this rustic, handmade hat seems to scream. Now when I have the urge to live on a farm in upstate New York, I’ll don this hat and sit in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.  By onnesti, $78.
