Wardrobe Refashion came about when Nichola Presteds, a.k.a. wardroberefashion, decided she needed to be more eco-friendly. She started with the obvious stuff like drying her clothes on the line outside, using less water, and reducing the packaging her family uses, but she knew she could be doing more. Her thoughts turned to her sewing hobby and the global need for clothing. She decided to go 6 months without buying new manufactured clothing and instead refashion or make her own from scratch. She shared her idea on her blog and was overwhelmed with the response. Participants worldwide join her on the blog pledging to abstain from purchasing new manufactured clothing, instead choosing to refashion, renovate, and recycle pre-loved items.
Originally from the UK, Nichola Prested now lives in Melbourne, Australia with her husband Kev and their three girls. She spends her days being paid to play with fabric at Tessuti Fabrics, enjoying time with her family, working with BurdaStyle and keeping Wardrobe Refashion running smoothly.
Although Wardrobe Refashion is all about refashioning and making from scratch, buying handmade items is accepted, which means Etsy purchases are allowed, particularly those that are recycled or refashioned! And Etsy has heaps of recycled/refashioned handmade items to offer…

What a great feature! Hooray for refashioning. I just bought a dress at a thrift store today that I plan on refashioning into my daughter's Halloween costume.

since i do not know how to sew nor do i own any sewing materials, i play around with out-of-date or tired looking clothing in other ways. to mask stains or revive a tired dress, i use scarfs around my waist or drape/wrap myself with gorgeous pieces of scrap material. this truly transforms an outfit and best of all is that it's not permanent.

I definitely enjoy the recycled/upcycled items on Etsy. I have purchased a few myself and always enjoy searching for the term "recycled" (along with my other search terms). I happen to do that myself but of course that is not the only reason I enjoy recycled items. I am always happy to see what can be done to spruce up or totally reinvent an item. norakaren, I love the designs in your shop as well! what fun.

The necktie warmer is fabulous! Some of my favourite clothes growing up, were cut and sewn from my mother's dresses. She had a hot pink chiffon dress that I loved to dress up in, and one day she magically transformed it into a cute sundress. I'm a terrible sewer, so even though I'm all grown up, my mother is still willing to occassionally "tweak" cool clothing that I find at the thrift store. It's surprising what you can do with strange objects and old materials around you, their history can be inspiring. That's how we started with our Mah Jongg necklaces - they were just too cool to sit in a box, without being seen or played with(because pieces were missing).

I love the idea of upcycled clothing. Yet, I admit I am a bit vain. If I were in my teens or 20's or maybe 112 lbs...I would seriously consider actually WEARING these items. But the models are young and thin. I'm a 16 or XL. DOES ANYONE HAVE PICTURES OF HEAVIER/OLDER WOMEN IN RECYCLED/UPCYCLED CLOTHING?
