As a youngster, Memorial Day brought forth the earliest hints of summer. It marked the first full day of the year when my parents would allow me to run around barefoot outside (an event I highly anticipated), usually with a hot dog in one hand and a glass of Kool-Aid in the other.
Here at the Etsy offices, we’ll be honoring this holiday by spending time with our families and friends. We’re thinking of our members and their family members who serve our country, such as the Homefront: Military Spouses Team. If you’re in the United States, we hope you have a wonderful day off from work, full of picnics, barbecues, and lots of sunshine.
But Memorial Day isn’t about neglecting our international pals! Below you’ll find a collection of items from Etsians all over the world.

If you want to add your comments to a Memorial Day Thank You to Troops and Vets go here: http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=6160266 And then if you want forward the thread as a string of "thank you's" to those you know in who have served or are serving. Just sent it to my husband (a retired military man) and he's in the process of forwarding it to some of his buddies.

Wow, it feels like a kick in the pants for etsy to celebrate all the other holidays with themes surrounding those holidays--foreign and local--with treasuries supporting those themes--then to get all politically correct with memorial day and put an international treasury in aqua--instead of a red, white, and blue treasury! As a wife of a veteran, and friend to wives who have lost their husbands in the current wars, I am deeply offended by this! This is OUR day to honor our veterans and our dead. And I'm more than happy to give other countries their due, as well--BUT on their holidays would be more appropriate! This is just disgraceful--you have no idea.

I would like to add that so many people forget about what Memorial Day really is about, its about remembering the Service Members that have given their lives to protect our country, the United States of America. Many Americans remember back of this day as being a 4 day weekend full of camping, BBQ's and relaxing but United States Service Members take this time to look back on the generations of lives that have been sacrificed to protect our freedom. Being a Army wife and generations of military members in my family, I would like to thank our service members and the lives lost for our country. Stay true to the Red, White and Blue!

jcollins16 says:
I don't see how this represented the US Memorial Day. I don't see any connection with the items listed above. I agree with monsterbugblankets - A wonderful opportunity was missed. Memorial day is not about picnics and such - it is about taking time to remember those who served our country to keep us safe and free and have passed on. The focus should not be about what's on the grill or what to wear in our ears. Regardless of anyone's feelings toward the military and war - those men and women and their families deserve to be honored and remembered.
uknowuneedanother says:
Memorial Day is meant to pay homage to the people who sacrificed THEIR LIVES in an effort to protect their country and all the people who do not do the actual fighting. And as jcollins 16 said, it isn't about anyone's personal philosophy regarding war, it's about the individuals who stepped up to the plate and wound up paying an ultimate cost.

Etsy Admin....you should be ashamed of yourselves!!!!! Yes the treasury is beautiful, but what on earth does it have to do with Memorial Day! You really let us down on this one.

I'm back, maybe if Etsy was better at acknowledging all their sellers at approprite times and for appropriate holidays and events, this might have been easier to write. Either leave ALL holidays completely alone or figure out a way to get it right.

asundrynotion says:
At the risk of sounding pedantic, 'Happy Memorial Day' is an oxymoron. Memorial Day is (used to be) a solemn occasion in remembrance of the casualties of war, no matter one's views on those conflicts in particular, views on patriotism, glorification of war, nationalism, et al. It's the commercialization of this Monday holiday/extended weekend as the start of summer that is so perverse and diminishes it's true intent. And the civilians who suffer all wars, through no cause of their own, but too were forever altered are never fully acknowledged for their daily courage & perseverance. "War would end if the dead could return." - Stanley Baldwin, 20th c. British Prime Minister, statesman, politician

I think Katie can only speak from her experience, what memorial day was for her. She also mentions the family members of the people who serve your country. I think that it also isn't about anyone's personal philosophy regarding war either. That isn't what she said. From Katie's point of view it is not easy to say something that will please everyone on this international venue that Etsy is. I am sure she thinks about your countrymen(as she says the people at the Etsy office do) and the people that sacrificed their lives too. Perhaps the relation between spring and memorial day isn't so strange. It is both about hope.

Dear Etsians, would it be the first time a holliday or an event get commercialised? Think about the death of Christ, the french revolution, The day of the dead and so so many more...I think no one will ever forget what these brave men fought for. No one. Rest assured. If it wasnt for them there wouldnt be a pic nic and kids running around. I think the whole world wants to celebrate life. And not death. Our father, sons, Grand parents would have want us to celebrate their memory. Not cry.

I hope everyone had a safe holiday weekend. And yes, I said holiday. Because in the half century that I've been on this Earth, that is what this weekend in May has always been. It was and is a time to get together with friends and family and kick off summer. And it was and is also a time to remember and honor the men and women that gave their lives for our country. It was not one OR the other. Not in my town. Not in any town that I've lived.

It is not the article that bothers me--I grew up with picnics, family get togethers, bbq's, and the like on Memorial Day. What bothers me is that the treasury that follows has nothing to do with memorial day. Yet etsy will celebrate the kentucky derby with a correct treasury. It doesn't offend them to celebrate other holidays with appropriate treasuries. But they are what--embarrassed? worried? disgusted?--to post an appropriate treasury for Memorial Day.

Vanessa says:
I'm sorry if we've offended you. Katie, who is The Storque's intern, was taking direction from me with this post. We were trying to speak to our very diverse readership, one whose international members have criticized us in the past for being too US centric. We knew that our fellow Admin would be doing home pages with Treasuries relating to the veterans and American themes. Here on the Storque, we wanted to take another angle and spotlight some of our international sellers as well as highlighting the Homefront Team in this post. We considered what we posted to be in tandem with the other features of the site.
monsterbugblankets says:
Thanks for commenting, Vanessa. A tandem post for Memorial Day was not a good idea. Two different and separate posts would have been more appropriate. I don't think anyone is so upset that the US celebrates their holidays, but rather that etsy doesn't give foreign holidays due course. Perhaps around the 15th of every month, a forum post could be opened asking people around the world to contribute articles about upcoming holidays/celebrations/memorials in their nation. This would allow others to give voice to the important times for their own countries.

Vanessa and Katie, I just want to say kudos to you. When I read this article, I was pleasantly surprised by the choice to feature items from international sellers in an article about an exclusively US holiday. It extended the message of Memorial Day to all corners of the earth and I for one read up about it to learn more. Thank you, the decision to involve Etsy's global community was a lovely thought.

i don't know...all these mixed emotions. my husband is in the coast guard, he's been active duty for going on 9 years now. i didn't think this article was offensive to the meaning of memorial day. many people who aren't connected to or have family in the military don't necessarily think of the sacrifices many others have made. but i'm sure that doesn't mean it goes unappreciated. however, i don't expect a commercial website to wax commemorative. thanks to the mention, though, i found a new etsy team to join...homefront. i look forward to working with them, and getting involved with issues that mean the most to me. and of course, found amazing new artwork. i mean, really...did you see that hand embroidered piece?!

PennyFabricArt says:
It's Memorial Day, not Picnic Day. It's about USA soldiers & their families, not International sellers and hot dogs. Highlight the international sellers with an international blog topic. It's just nonsense to feature international shops on a Memorial Day blog. That's like commemorating Chinese New Year by highlighting shops from North Dakota. Memorial day isn't about kool aid & sack races. Please take a few minutes to learn what it is about: http://www.usmemorialday.org/backgrnd.html

While I thought the treasury was a little disconnected from the article, I don't really see the huge deal. It's not like commercializing Memorial Day with a treasury the way to honor the dead either.

Even though Etsy is an international site. If your going to write about a US holiday...It should honor that US Holiday. Having a military husband, Im not offended, but I can understand why some are. The article should have reflected the red, white and blue colors. The show case pics have NOTHING to do with the military. Memorial day is not about your family and camping!
