News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere: February 26, 2009

“Treading the soil of the moon, palpitating its pebbles, tasting the panic and splendor of the event, feeling in the pit of one’s stomach the separation from terra — these form the most romantic sensation an explorer has ever known.” – Vladimir Nabokov

Another Thursday, another edition of News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere. This week’s theme is exploration, be it the Antarctic or the integration of shoulder pads into fashion. (Roll with me here…!) There’s 1970s frilliness à la Altman’s 3 Women, adorable antique dolls of the Lonely Doll lineage (and fashion icons, at that!), three dimensional papercuts that challenge the mind’s eye and photos from a most unforgettable trip to the far reaches of the Earth.

Read on!

I have been fascinated by the journeys of adventurers past for as long as I can remember. The story of Dr. Frederick A. Cook (the first man to reach the North Pole) captivated me, especially when I lived near his dilapidated Brooklyn mansion. This collection of photos documents the First Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) and originates from the State Library of New South Wales Collection on Flickr. It looks like an amazing (and harsh) trip! And look at those artificial looking penguins! Check out the entire photo set here.

It’s official: the shoulder pad is back. The Fall 2009 shows were full of the linebacker silhouette, and I have to say that I’m not entirely opposed to the resurrection. Karen Walker and Marc Jacobs show it well, albeit in different ways. What’s your take? [Via New York Magazine]

Peter Callesen’s Papercut series was recently shown in New York. The 3D work is out of this world. [Via Miniature Rhino]

Lenci Dolls are a 1930s dream. I had never heard of them until just recently, though they looked oddly familiar. After a little research on the (adorable!) Lenci Dolls website, I realized that one of my favorite children’s story book characters, Edith the Lonely Doll, belongs to the Lenci family! Make sure to check out the 1917 Mary and Gretel video for fairy tale doll cuteness. [Via Nothing is New and Fashion Forestry]

I’ve fallen in love with Iluchka’s Fairy Pale line. It’s totally delicate in a 3 Women, 1970s kind of way. Check out the site to see the models dance around. I love the staging of these photos! [Via Fashion Forestry]

I really like the pictures of the Antarctic. They look like my place, up until about 1 1/2 weeks ago! I've had a life long interest in polar exploration. Amundsen is my favorite, with Shackleton a close second (for leadership, not skill). But I digress... Great stuff shown here! I'll keep coming back. Pete
