There are many techniques and free resources out there to help you create your Etsy Shop banner. I’ve gathered a few of my favorite tutorials and links to help you get started. Before you go off exploring these, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite banners — think of these as ideas to spark your own experiments. Make your banner work for your shop!
1. Give viewers a good idea of what they’ll find in your shop.
2. Crop a photo to the correct banner size (760 x 100 pixels) and you are good to go!
3. Make sure your banner ties in with the colors and branding of your item listings.
4. Use your banner to punch up your promotions.
5. Use your banner to share more about you as an artist — give a little insight into your process.
6. Make sure your banner images are RGB and not CMYK for easy uploads!
7. Don’t stress! You can update your banner whenever you want. Keep in mind that your banner is only seen on a few pages of your Etsy shop. I suggest making sure your avatar is a current representation of your shop. After all, your avatar is seen on every single page of your Etsy shop, and in other areas of Etsy (the Forums, Pounce, etc.)
8. Finally, don’t forget about all the designers on Etsy that can customize a banner for your shop. Try searching “Etsy shop banner” to browse the banner designs currently available. If you’d rather create one yourself, use the tips and tricks below:

Okay... I had some problems with the GIMP program. I don't think it downloaded completely for my Mac computer. If anyone else needs some help making a banner, I figured it out using Keynote and exporting it out as a jpg. That way I had more choices and control than I could access under GIMP. Maybe I am just a gimp at using GIMP! Does anyone else use a mac out there??? My banner is not fantastic but it was an improvement. Thanks much.

I actually found this easy and I needed a photo editing program and haven't been able to find one and this is perfect for not just my banners but for other projects and digital picture editing!!! I see some comments say it is hard, you DO have to spend a little time fooling around with it and there is a great UNDO button that can undo things quite far back! That came in handy. If anyone is having trouble you can ask me for help and I'm sure other people would be willing to help you out with your banner too!

I took a web authoring class a few semesters ago and I highly recommend bannersketch.com. It's super easy to use, or at the very least you can get an idea of different banner sizes and make your own on Photoshop. I like playing around with both.

I've tried to put together a banner. It looks nice but I don't understand how to get the correct size for etsy to accept it. HELP!!

The auto cropping of the etsy website sucks. I had a picture that was the appropriate dimensions and when I uploaded the pic, the website cropped zoomed in and left me with a terrible looking banner

Well- I finally did it! With a little help from my hubby--I was getting hung up on pixels and saving to a jpg...but the trick was "exporting" not " saving" for me and I finally cracked the code!! You can too... if you need more help contact the etsy team--they sent me a personal email and helped walk me through--so easy! Now I just might make a new Banner just to try it again!

These are great ideas! When creating my banner I decided to incorporate handmade elements to reflect my handmade one of a kind jewelry. I drew my peacock logo and scanned into photoshop. The font I selected for my banner was inspired by typewriter lettering, which further reinforced my handmade and one-of-a kind theme. Now I am thinking I should refine my banner by incorporating elements that reflect the jewelry focus of my shop. Good work everyone!

If you need to crop an image but don't have photo editing software, here is a really good website to use to crop it by pixel size: http://www.resize.it/advanced-online-photo-tools.html Just set the crop box to 100 pixel height and a 720 width and you're good to go! TIP: it seems to work better if your photos are saved in PNG format instead of JPEG format. I used it for the banner of my shop (in progress right now) and it worked really well!
