I don’t know about you, but walking down my driveway each day to get my mail is one of the highlights of my day. In the age of MySpace, Twitter, Facebook and email, correspondence through snail mail is becoming a dying art form. But as an Etsy seller, you have the opportunity to revel in the act of sending snail mail all the time as you ship out your orders. So why not have fun with it? And with the holidays quickly approaching, you can stand out from the Big Box store orders by making your packages fun, colorful, clever and eye-catching!
I remember the first order I received from an Etsy seller several years ago. It of course had a few freebies thrown in (which I love about so many generous Etsians!), but even more delightful was the fact that when I pulled the package out of my mailbox, it was a feast for my eyes. Decorated with brightly colored Cram-Cream deco tape and stickers, I thought “Now, this is a package!”
Smile Recipe Stickers – Red and Wolf By SmileRecipe, $4.View Item | View Shop |
Deco adhesive Tape – Mary Poppins From missmacau, $3.60.View Item | View Shop |
You can stand out from other packages, grab the eye of your customer and really make their day by adding a couple of inexpensive touches like labels, stickers, stamps or patterned packing tape, just to name a few. It doesn’t take a lot, but it’s those small touches that show your customer you made the extra effort and that you appreciate them. Show them that they’re not just a number in a warehouse, but a valued customer!
Dress up your addressee area with a decorative polymer stamp. Just stamp your image and then handwrite (which always adds a personal touch) the address in the open area that the stamp provides.
Deco Stamp – Cheer up From nothingelegant, $7.99.View Item | View Shop |
Custom rubber stamp By RobertoSand, $17.View Item | View Shop |
Or use a decorative blank label! It doesn’t matter if the label is self-adhesive or not, you can always cover the label with clear package tape to adhere it to your package.
The County Fair Journaling Tags By elles, $3.75.View Item | View Shop |
Self Adhesive Address/Gift Label By ahyingmui, $5.50.View Item | View Shop |
Not only can you attach things to your package to make it stand out, but the vessel in which you send your product can also have a big impact. A recycled envelope can be much more eye-catching (and also environmentally friendly) then a typical mailer you buy at a post-supply.
Upcycled Designer Envelopes By thecardstall, $3.View Item | View Shop |

Or what about a super cute, totally unique mailer that sets itself apart from your typical, boring, utilitarian package?
Fun Miss J Big Paper Envelope Set of 3 From nothingelegant, $6.99.View Item | View Shop |
Padded Pear Envelopes (set of 2) By PickalaPoopa, $5.View Item | View Shop |
It’s always important that your customer knows how much you appreciate their purchase. Before your customer even opens your package, you can say “thank you!” with a stamp, sticker or deco tape. Check out these from your fellow Etsians.

Hopefully this has inspired you to not only make the inside of your packages fun and creative, but also the outside. In this case, maybe you can judge a book by its cover!

I love getting a fun package from an Etsy seller, and my customers always comment on the packaging I use to send their items. I send larger things in a reused envelope, but use a catalog page as my address label (covered with clear packaging tape). For smaller items, I use one of the map envelopes that I sell in my stationery sets and type their address with my vintage cursive typewriter. Both large and small packages are tied up with tissue paper (reused) and ribbon, often with a freebie attached. And of course, there's always a handwritten little note thanking them by name that's signed by me. :) I love personalizing the packaging and making my customers feel special when they open their mailbox! Thanks for these lovely options to remind us that buying on Etsy should be a fun experience for our customers. :)

Those are really neat ideas! I love the thought of receiving a unique package - that would just make my day. :) However, I'm always too afraid of it being stolen to dress up one of my own like that, especially if it has to go through customs. I generally work in the opposite direction, going out of my way to make my packages look ordinary so they'll arrive on time and in one piece. I make up for it on the inside, though. ^_^

WhiteFlagDesigns says:
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE getting pretty packages in the mail, BUT... I'm leery of dressing up the outside of my packages- I try not to draw any shady people's attention to the contents which lie within; you never know who'll be handling your customers' orders once they leave your hands. I feel much better shipping my items to my customers in boring old kraft paper bubble mailers, it may be boring, but at least it's safe. I do mark each one with a rubber stamp, though, and have lately been carving my own stamps for this purpose. It's fun, and it adds a little bit of personality to the mailer without making it scream "HEY THERE'S REALLY COOL STUFF INSIDE ME, OPEN ME UP AND STEAL IT!!" Cute article, btw :) Lots of great stuff- I didn't know there were folks on Etsy making actual mailers!!

Great tips! I think keeping packages plain is a good idea, around the holidays especially, to reduce chance of theft. I gift wrap/package items as 'green' as possible so that precludes the use of polymer stickers/labels. Take the time to let your buyers know they are sincerely appreciated with a hand written thank you note or card. Old fashioned courtesy never goes out of style.

Creativity never runs out, but TIME does. I make sure everything I ship is safely packed, I send it next day and the cheapest way. My packing is neat and clean with a small gift box and a small thank you. I barely have time to photo and list and write descriptions, let alone decorate the outside of my packages. Nice as it is to recieve a prettily-dressed package in the mail, that's no good if it's not functional for getting your item safely to your buyer! I use almost all recycled packaging & while I don't think anyone's ever said my packages are "pretty", a lot of folks comment that they are "well-wrapped"! And while we're on the subject, can I ask sellers please NOT to include little sparkles or loose pot-pourri amongst the layers of tissue in a package? This really annoys me (it's almost impossible to get out of the carpet) & means I'll NEVER go back to that seller!

Don't forget to doodle on your envelopes too! I do and I really enjoy seeing the faces of the postal workers when I post my happy heart packages! Inside I'll usually wrap items up in magazine paper, tied with string (who dosen't love string?) and finished off with a little heart tag. I also like to recycle old bubble mailers by covering with magazine pages and popping a label on top with the address. (((very cheap but special!)))

I love the fact that re-using and recycling is a common strand through many of the comments above! Etsy sellers are eco-conscious as well as creative. As a buyer I love to receive creative packaging. My first buy on Etsy was a little owl planter/vase. It came wrapped, with a sweet little note and owl drawing - it was like receiving a present! As a seller, well, no-one has bought anything yet (still waiting, hoping!), but one of the reasons I'm so looking forward to my first sale is the thought of making a package as pretty (and eco) as one I'd love to receive!

Nice ideas! However, be careful as to how you address your packages! I've read/heard how the USPS is a little "picky" as to how the addressee's address should show, and anything creative could slow down your shipment. I suggest checking with your local post office first before getting too creative with the "ship to" address.

sorry...no photo/logo yet, but as i prepare to open my first Etsy shop...i spotted this article and thought it was great, and mention something i have done with hand-sewn gifts for my tiny grandniece, located far away. I have a stash of gift bags ( all sizes and occasions) and began opening them up and recycling them for mailing.I have had dozens of comments from the lady at the post office to the mother of the recipient, responding to the unusual packaging and how it brightened their day and put a smile on their faces! maggielucia

I always include an extra goodie with my goods. I remember opening my first Etsy purchase and the seller had included a little blue bow barrette... I have never worn it, but five years later it is still sitting in a dish on my vanity that I use every day. Sometimes a little smile can go a long ways!
