Talking Shop Series Tries a More Talkative Format

UPDATE: Hi All,
We haven’t yet finished the podcast but we wanted to let you know that we are working on it.  As it turns out, none of us has a future in radio!  I really hope we can post it next week.  We’ll let you know when it’s ready.

Sincerely,
Maria

We’ve closed comments. Thank you for all the questions.

I am excited to let you know that we’re going to try a new format for our “Talking Shop” blog posts. The Talking Shop series was originally conceived to be periodic posts from Etsy’s leaders, including Chad Dickerson, Matt Stinchcomb, Sara Hicks and me.

Here are a few of the most recent posts in this series:

Talking Shop with Etsy CEO Maria Thomas 2/27/09

Talking Product with Etsy’s VP of Product Sara Hicks

Talking Tech with Etsy CTO Chad Dickerson

Talking Shop with Etsy CEO Maria Thomas 11/3/2008

2008 Holiday Marketing (with Matt Stinchcomb)

We’ve been discussing whether there might be a more personal and effective way to communicate with all of you more frequently and how we can reach more people. At times, we’ve found that the written word in a one-to-many format doesn’t fully satisfy your needs or our goals.

So, we’re going to try a group audio podcast. Here’s how it will work:

  • You, the Etsy community, send us questions, comments, suggestions, etc. You can do so by commenting on this post prior to May 15, 2009.

  • We will read each of your comments, group them into similarly themed posts, and select the most commonly asked questions and highlights from them to address in the podcast.
  • Chad, Matt, Sara and I (possibly with additional colleagues depending on the question or comment) will get together to answer your questions and discuss your ideas, suggestions, etc. We will also use this podcast to follow up on comments in the threads from our latest blog posts.

This is an experiment. We are also considering other ways to interact more personally with large groups of Etsians. If you have other thoughts about how you would like to hear from Etsy’s leadership team, please let us know.

Sincerely,

Maria aka pesmou

Wow, Etsy, thank you for being so open to hearing us!! I hope this will be a beneficial experiment for all. Would you like feedback on any kinds of opinions about Etsy, or, specifically, how to communicate with us best? I know for me, Storque articles are always effective because I read them all. But not everyone does. It will be interesting to see what people say. As far as other random Etsy suggestions go, I would love to see us be able to rearrange items in our shop and I would love to see a more personalized Artist Profile page...with the option for us to add a personal picture, not just an avatar, and other customizable options. Etsy you are doing a fine job and I love the work that you all put into it.

Sounds exciting. I know there are many sellers and buyers out there that have questions they would love to have answered in a more succinct way. My question is why does the featured items list sometimes does not work? I find myself pressing "up" more than 5 times with no response.

I'd love to see a few new features that make is more user-friendly for Etsy sellers. Here's just a few examples: 1. ability to "edit this item" directly from the item page 2. ability to rearrange shop items 3. ability to convo buyer directly from receipt page 4. ability for buyer to convo seller about an item directly from the item page and have the item automatically referenced in the convo 5. ability to view only positive, only neutral, or only negative feedback (as opposed to having to scroll through all pages of feedback) 6. batch feedback These are suggestions that have been brought up by Etsy sellers (and buyers) time and time again in the forums. Thanks for listening!

well, yes! the first thing that crossed my mind was an ellaboration of juliehammondart' question: can you (=etsy managements) set up internet discussions about how can etsy sellers get exposure, how can they advertise, at different levels of monetary investment, and for different products (i.e. precious metalsmith jewelry sells easier that crochetted coasters and keyrings, so advice for one won't benefit the other). the second thought was: your site is lacking in so many little corners, the "Ideas" section of the forums comes up with the same 12 ideas every month, why would you embarc on such a collosal task as this podcast, instead of reading the ideas forums more often. But then again, I am a team leader for a web-base project (in my unreal life) and I know how things look so different from the oposite side of the API ;-) Any way you want to hear us, we will speak up: etsy is on it's way to becoming an institution (no insult meant ;-) and the sellers need courses in how to succesfully undertake the role of etsy seller. You boast of being international, but my views are so strongly coming from the States, taht my GA map is practically white except for the US teritory - taht is you need advertising on foreign websites, just like we do with Project Wonderfull, only better ;-) I've got so much more ideas, I'm affraid I'll get to the limitation of post lengths... I'll leave some space for the others ;-)

oh, and by "courses" and "internet discussions", I mean properly set up pages with information coming from a professional. Reading the forums is all very well, and more often than not you get to a good advice, but most sellers have neither the time, nor the english knowledge, nor the PC savvy to sift through the forums... and often enough, the threads are so controversial, that a simple newbie cannot pick a side and an beneficial bottom line.

First of all, I wish to thank you for taking such a personal interest. I would like to comment on something said regarding Vintage. Vintage has always been a part of the Etsy vision. A vision does not need to be justified. If there were no other reason, Vintage is recycling, which is good for our planet. I love the Etsy vision with the emphasis on handmade items which cannot be found elsewhere plus the supplies with which to make them. The Vintage just adds another dimension, and one does not take the place of the other. What I would like to see is some print advertising at Christmas - say in the NY Times magazine or some other publication. I would even be willing to contribute for this. Etsy is still not known the way it should be for Etsy's unique qualities.

I'd like to know what Etsy is doing to retain it's quality and integrity in the marketplace. I'd love to see listings that weren't 6 months in length. I think if as a seller, if I don't care enough about a product to relist/try and promote it, it shouldn't be clogging up the searches. I think that would increase quality and help us get noticed a little more, we're all a speck of sand in a sand dune at the moment. My jewelry shop starfalldesign.etsy.com did 3 sales in the first week, I think partly because I was coming up in the "undiscovered" section. Now my hits have become considerably less and I haven't had a sale in weeks. I am sure lots of people would love to have advice on this!

I read an article in AOL's headlines about sales tax and internet sales. I have seen nothing on this since. I know what my states sales tax is, but how do I keep track of all 50 state's sales tax?? Supposedly, this was a bill making it's way thru the gov. but I have seen nothing since. a podcast is a nice idea, but it will exclude many sellers; the same way that sellers who do not sign up for the emails, or read the forums are already excluded from most of the really important release of information here on etsy. i know this, because i am one who spends way too much of my time mining for information on etsy. i am signed up for emails, podcasts (via itunes), read the forums almost every day, follow etsy on twitter, and get news from outside sources as well. i only look at the storque when i am directed there from somewhere else. it is too full of articles without an easy way for me to separate information pertinent to my particular needs, so i don't bother with it much. my friends and studiomates who sell on etsy, most of them are completely clueless of anything going on sitewise. many of them list, relist and sell without any of these things. or they see the amount of knowledge i have about etsy, and how i have come about it (through hours and hours of reading), and feel discouraged from using etsy at all. with those people in mind, i would encourage some way to have a stripped down version of the storque, maybe a site announcements area with information that is searchable etc. i am not sure how to go about this. the admin forum is a start, but it doesn't reach many sellers who do not even know the forums exist (or have no desire to go there). it should be easy to find, possibly abbreviated with the ability to read further. maybe in a digest form? i am not sure. and then, i would also like to see a more active presence in the forums by admin. i don't believe that the forums is an accurate representation of the etsy community as a whole; there are plenty of the same people making their same loud complaints there, but a stronger presence of admin there to answer questions may assuage many concerns and lend more credibility to the forums as a whole (and might be more user friendly to those who have backed out of there and to new users). maybe some "office hours" for other admin who rarely show up there. i am interested in discussion, but i am more interested in what happens with the site as a whole, since a large chunk of my income depends on it.

    1. As has been mentioned, spend some time reading the IDEAS forum (that's what it is for, after all!) and respond to the issues that are brought up there over and over and over 2. Find a way to make both Vintage and Supplies feel less like the "ugly stepchildren" of this site! "Etsy: Your Place for All Things Handmade" is a great tagline, but you are excluding and alienating a HUGE portion of your sellers!!! 3. I know, I know...something more important always comes up...BUT PLEASE, support the teams, for most of whom the primary mission is to support you! We're not asking for a big fancy hub with lots of bells and whistles!!! HONEST!!! We just want to be able to update our own team profiles (I don't care how many times I send in updates on the text of our profile, it never gets updated correctly!), and we really need a way to contact all of our members without having to go off-site or send hundreds of individual convos. It would AWESOME if we had our own chat/lab function, but that isn't as important as just letting us contact all our members in one easy, on-Etsy step. And I'm sure you all can come up with all kinds of fun bells and whistles and toys....but they are not VITAL to us being able to manage our teams. Thanks! I would like to know why Etsy doesn't take out full pages ads or advertise on television. Lately, the press Etsy has gotten hasn't been great. There are huge audiences you haven't tapped into because of the narrow focus of things that you feature and the places you choose to feature them. I'd also like to know why traditional retail holidays and events are basically tossed onto the front page 2 days before the actual date. A little forethought goes a long way. I would also like to know why we can have page after page of discussions about front page features in the forum, and they are mostly ignored by admin. I have alot more items to list but do not have the time to sit and choose my tags one by one repeatedly. So I keep more of my items listed on ebay for that reason. Hi there, Etsy Admin! Thank you for doing this! My questions are: 1. Would you ever please consider hiring someone to moderate the listings as they go up? ... specifically for Vintage items and items which are from resellers. Ideally, I personally think it should be someone who has experience in valuing and determining vintage quality. I sell vintage on here as well as handmade and I'm shocked at how much non-vintage stuff gets passed off as vintage just because it's cute. I flag and flag and flag. Nothing happens. I'm talking about stuff which has major brand names clearly visible in the photos. Brands which, because I used to manage a consignment shop, I know for a fact are no older than 10 years. 2. Can you please explain to us what happens when we flag an item? 3. Does it help for us to provide you proof in the comments section as we flag items (i.e. with links to photos of that same item in a catalog or listed elsewhere on the internet which clearly determines it to be an illegal article)? 4. Etsy is growing by leaps and bounds in internet and cultural popularity... do you have any plans to expand advertising into other interest groups, such as music magazines (like Paste, Spin, Rolling Stone, etc.), parenting magazines, etc? Thanks so much! xoxo- -Brooke -SoSheSews

Whether this means staffing on the weekends or whatever you can think of it would be great :) I also think it would be super cool if each category had it's OWN Etsy Admin person. Like Geekery to go to _______ and Needlepoint could go to __________, etc so on and so forth. That person could help with matters specific to that category and could also judge bad tagging issues that seem to crop up. Upon entering a category you might see a friendly avatar of the Etsy Admin in charge of that section up in the right hand corner. And you could say Hey! Thanks for this great chance to voice concerns and to listen to others as well as yourself speak to us. Isn't the internet great? I really have tried to understand how the front page is chosen and I think that a few times a week there could be a lottery where admin doesn't know who they are picking.. just an idea as there is alot of rumble about FP all the time// I think as this is the premium way to get seen and make sales there might be a way to make sure everyone has a chance at it some day of the week.. just an idea. And I want to echo the ability to re arrange items. very very crucial to marketing the best at the top where people see. I sell 150 items at once and would love to be able to decide what I want to be seen on first page. I really want to say thanks for all that admin has tried to accomplish week after week, wonderful storque articles and featured sellers.. its awesome. How about featured seller being up one day.. there are so so many of us and to be up more than one day is overkill. I have seen many artist sell out and not even have much left by day 2 or 3 so consider that. And last but not least at all. is it possible to have a category for Photography both modern and vintage. As a person who has spent 35 years in that field I can tell you we would scream for joy if recognized as a seperate art form. I have to agree with KarmaRox about the forums. If you want our ideas and feedback, that is a great place to look. That's what that section is for, afterall. As for getting news announcements to us, I'm really pleased with the new Announcements section and the newsletters. Some people might not like the feel of the one-to-many format, but if you have a big announcement to make about major changes or tech problems, that's the best way to reach the most people at once, and when those announcements are made BEFORE the changes happen, you have a much happier, better-informed Etsy population. The main question that I would like to see addressed in a Podcast is whether or not Etsy going to start doing some serious advertising. As a seller, it is obviously my responsibility to drive my own traffic to my shop, but when there are still so many people who simply don't know what Etsy is, or when sellers feel the need to organize an Etsy Day on their own, it might be time for Etsy to address this issue.

Alright - now that I know you're listening! First of all, I LOVE being, selling and buying here! My biggest beef is the gift guides and how things are chosen - there is so much talent here - 1 listing per seller seems fair and rotate to get more variety and exposure! I'm with the others. There are alot of great posts in the forums - check 'em out once in a while, not just when it's time to shut it down! Tagging - yes, definitely - do y'all really even do this or is it so overwhelming that it takes a back burner? Someone mentioned the featured seller - what a great idea to have it for 24 hours and then choose another - we'd all like to someday hope for that chosen position! Yes, I've seen several shops sell totally out in a day and have nothing left to sell. What a great thing to happen, but think how great it would be if it happened to more sellers! Okay, yep - I'm done and I can't wait to see what comes out of this!! Thanks for listening!!

First of all, Tina and I love listing on Etsy. However, we were wondering if there is a way to list an item separately and then list it with something else without having to list twice and then deactivate a listing if only one of the items sells. Also, we have noticed that there are alot of repeated pictures on the front page. Last week one seller had three items in the same front page group and another seller had the same picture three times in one week. There should be a way to track that so that the front page has more of a sampling of everyone's work. Thank you for listening.

I appreciate the ongoing efforts by Etsy to develop an effective and many-pronged system of communicating with the member community, but I have to say that I agree with KarmaRox at the top of the comments: "Really, all you need to do is read the forums if you want to hear from us." The best way to keep a finger on the pulse of the membership is to visit the fora. Which prompts me to suggest, once again, that Etsy explore a more efficient forum set-up, at least for the Ideas and Bugs sections. As I suggested here - http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5853240 - this would be an excellent way to keep track of user suggestions and bug reports, as well as a perfect vehicle for keeping those users up-to-date on their status. Maria did mention (in early November '08) that this was being looked at, but we've heard nothing more about it since. But, since you asked for it . . . here are some other important issues: *** site-wide currency disclosure of $USD (long, long, long overdue) *** more effective content control (what happened to the proposals from Matt's article http://www.etsy.com/storque/etsy-news/community-topics-resellers-on-etsy-2541/ ?) *** better use of the Gift Guides, and quicker turnover, to keep them fresh and relevant *** seller control over inventory of items that have not been paid for ('pending' instead of 'sold'? http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5479780 ) *** inability of sellers to cancel ANY transaction when the item has been paid for - even in the case of a refunded sale, it is best to maintain a permanent record of it *** prevention of feedback from NPBs *** privacy for buyers!! (no one needs to see a detailed list of member purchases except the buyer involved in those purchases) *** and, to that end, I would like for Etsy to link all of a member's accounts behind the scenes, and allow a single, undisclosed buyer account per member - http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5492964&page=5#post-34852223 *** not a priority, but it sure would be nice to be able to filter sellers out of search results (perhaps by clicking an 'x' beside the sellername in the left-hand list on the results page?), to further drill down to what buyers are actually looking for - http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5746877 Hmmmm. Am I forgetting something? (I may post again.)

    1. PREVENT tag abuse. Don't expect the Etsy community to do all the work. The sellers need to be making our product and managing our own stores. It is very frustrating to be drowned out in a sea of mis-tagged items. 2. Redesign the seller's shop pages so we can do everything from one page: renew, edit, rearrange. The new design should allow us to view all our shop items or just one category on ONE page, and then give us options to renew, edit and rearrange items. Simple "move up", "move down" buttons would be good; drag and drop would be awesome. 3. Make it easy for us to contact a buyer about a particular sale. When viewing the "receipt" page, it would be great to click a button to open a convo and put the item name and sale number in the subject of the convo. 4. On the sold/orders page, show what date the "got payment" and "shipped" check boxes were checked. thanks for listening!

I would like to know: 1) Why do so many rule-breaking items make it to the front page, or the gift guides, or the Storque? Why does quality control seem so lax? 2) Why are items that are *blatantly* rule-breaking take so long to be removed from the site? 3) When a seller is contacted about a rule-breaking item, why does the Contact team so often completely neglect to specify which item they are referring to? And why are sellers contacted by the Content team about problems that do not exist in their shop? (i.e. telling a seller to remove a tag when nothing in their shop has that particular tag). Again, this seems like a quality control issue stemming from a lack of organization and attention to detail. Thank you for trying out a new format for communication. I hope it is effective.

Firstly a BIG DITTO on the thanks for the wonderful site, and all that you do. My suggestions/thoughts? It would be great, to add a feature for buyers that says "people who viewed this ... also viewed this" to organically sort of walk them through the site/or other sellers". Or indeed create the concept of "just browsing". Lets face it when we shop in a physical store, we wander around the departments ... and displays lead us to other departments ... I believe that is the reason why Etsy's front page is so successful, it shows multiple departments or areas. I would suggest if a user (buyer) is looking for something special they'll search for it, and you've got that covered. BUT would suggest that most shoppers who come across the site are just browsing, perhaps with nothing special in mind. We need to work out ways to get people to 'impulse' buy. Does that make sense? (as you can tell I have a million words I could say, but will resist the temptation and leave it at this.) Thank you for listening! Carry on!

Threads along these lines are an ongoing relugar occurance and one of the best argumments for doing a public and full acknowledgement of the vintage and suplly sellers. The less than forthright manner accorded to the other Etsy product lines create strife. Artisans come to the site under the illusion of ETSY BEING STRICTLY FOR CRAFTED ITEMS. The continuing lack of clarity and mealy mouthed way in which this problem is NOT dealt with is a festering wound. Sellers are expected to do full disclosure. The site should hold itself to the same standards expected from the sellers. I am sure that similar rationales apply. I also would like to know that the administrative level included some personel who were knowledgable with the vintage catagories. Unfortunately, the level of ignorance of vintage IS apparant.

RedBubble is catered to prints only, but is a good site to compare against, its community features like groups help manage the huge volume of submissions. I think all these site have a similar problem - its quite hard to filter for high quality in the genre you want. I think you need basically a combination of google keyword search, good tags and voting on quality by the community to make the good stuff findable by people who want to purchase art. Another aspect is to have focussed sub-sites or groups, such as scifi / fantasy or formats such as ACEO, small oil paintings etc - you almost need one busy community evangelist to be involved with each subsite, so it has value to collectors, and the best work is really highlighted. cheers, gordon anderson [ http://redbubble.com/people/gord for a sample of my work ]

Any advice about would be greatly appreciated and would help raise my spirits about all the hard work I'm putting into something that really isn't taking off. Also, other little things on uploading that would be extremely helpful: uploading all 5 photos at the same time (like blogger, for instance) would be uber-helpful; ability to rearrange items would also be extremely nice; when browsing Etsy and clicking Add Item to Favorites without being logged in, once you log in, it would be nice if that item would actually be added to your Favorites without having to re-click. I just cruised through the above list and copied things that I have heard myself "wish for" to other sellers when discussing Etsy and other sites. For now I am with Etsy. I like the site, I like the customers. I promote the heck out of my little corner of Etsy. I do feel that Etsy needs to step up campaigns appealing to buyers and INCLUDE all sellers. If the Buyers are here, the Sellers will follow in droves! *** Have a reason for certain features and a slimming down of some of the silly features like searching by color. I tried it, mostly it seemed to pick up items with colored borders or backgrounds. Feedback is nice, but the reason for Neg feedback (for buyers) is to serve as an early warning (to sellers). When sales happen without a countdown (such as an auction) negative feedback isn't seen by the seller until after the buyer has already made the purchase. Often the Neg FB is for non payment and the buyer is left relisting. so: ***Immediate payment required before an item is removed from a store is a great idea! *** Auto account closure once a buyer has X% of non-paid for purchases. Out of my three NPBs in 2009, one had 2 negs for non payment out of 3 transactions! That's a 66% Negative/No Pay history. I have had 3 NPBs that I did not Neg because they could give the same feedback. This was a large bone of contention at another unnamed site, and led to many seller's leaving. *** prevention of feedback from NPBs *** privacy for buyers!! (no one needs to see a detailed list of member purchases except the buyer involved in those purchases) Yes please. I am not comfortable having my purchases available for anyone to browse through and I do not want my buyers private transactions available for browsing either. We sell to a lot of interior designers who in turn resell the items to their clients, they don't need to worry whether their client will see the item in a sold section of Etsy. ***A more streamlined process for adding items would be nice, including templates and a bulk uploader. PLEASE!! Listing Items is SUCH a Drag of a process! It would be lovely for me to remove a bunch of options from my template(things I will never sell), set a few as permanent and make loading faster. I am sure Handmade sellers are tired of having to scroll down to select Handmade, I'd really love to have a default template to Vintage for myself. Also the combined shipping option for someone like myself where everything is a different size and I can't just say "YES" to combined shipping on everything. I've love to stop having to add the price in twice. ***Along the same lines, please allow me to set up a one size fits all box for shipping. I'd like to select Japan, Sweden, UK, France, Australia, NZ and maybe one or two other destinations and charge one international rate. Having to enter TWO dollar amounts PER Country takes FOREVER. Consequently I just leave comments on the main page saying if you live out of the country please contact me for a ship quote. THIS HURTS ETSY. Europeans feel that Etsy is more of an American thing. It's not. Just listing prices for each country twice is such a pain in the butt. I do not want to select "Everywhere Else" because I do not want to ship to Africa, China, Hong Kong or Korea. *** Etsy needs to be marketed towards buyers. There is a lot of effort put into attracting more sellers and there always has been. I find the only people who've ever heard of Etsy, however, are people who sell on it. You need to get publicity and advertising in non-crafty publications to attract more buyers. NON CRAFTY MAGAZINES! The Craft Market can be very DIY and DIY means Do Not Buy: MAKE. If you look at a site like Auction Bytes, all the sellers fleeing "the giant that was" they all know what Etsy is but they all want to know the same thing: How are your sales? Etsy has the ears of sellers, now Etsy needs the hearts of Buyers. The "giant that was" was built on Vintage and collectibles, doesn't Etsy want to openly include that market?

The founder doesn't want the company to go that way, so sellers need to know - like an intro course or operations manual. The sellers handbook is good, though. The info basically needs to be more organized, more searchable, and more categorized. I'm a newbie, too, basically. I've spent a lot of time on myself and myself, and sifting through too much info. I blog, I twitter, I read blogs, I comment on blogs, I flickr, I joined flickr groups, I joined teams, I favorited loads of people locally and on my teams. Really, people, the stuff isn't going to sell itself. You have to work at it - it's a job! Research your product, your audience, your prices, your words, your tags, whatever! Join teams, network, blog, twitter, get a license (still working on that one), pay taxes. Speaking of taxes, what about that sales tax issue? If you really want to sell, you have to wear all the hats - artist, photographer, writer, editor, outside sales, marketing, lawyer, accountant, quality control - the whole bit! Promote yourself. That's what's on sale. Thanks for listening, alex http://alexkellerblog.blogspot.com

Thank you for giving us this opportunity! I would love to be able to edit items from the item page, rearrange items in my shop, and have more shop sections. I think it would also be great if flagging items rendered results. I also think that Etsy should start marketing more towards buyers, like someone else mentioned. Most of the time, when I see Etsy advertised, it seems geared more towards getting more people to come here and sell. Finding another way to feature sellers would also be greatly appreciated. I know there's the infamous front page feature, but most of the time I can't tell the difference from one front page treasury to another. Except, of course, when I notice the same items there in a different front page treasury several times a day. Perhaps if there were some sort of limit? For example, there could be a rule that you can only be featured on the front page once every two weeks, once a month, or some other time frame. This way it would give others a better chance to showcase their talents to everyone who visits. Another site that I sell on lists search results randomly. I think that would be worth looking into for Etsy as well. It gives people a chance to be seen more often. Or you could at least give buyers a choice of how they would like their results listed. I know when I'm shopping, it's annoying to see 12 of the same thing, from the same shop, on the same page. Those are my main concerns/suggestions right now. Thanks again for the opportunity!

I love etsy and the idea of etsy. I've read the posts and agree with most of the comments. 1. lovejoy creations had a great suggestion: create a separate category for leather. I make handbags and when a buyer is confronted with over 5000 pages of bags, it's luck from the heavens that gets a seller seen, if ever. I've been listed since Feb. 27th and have had no sales. If it weren't for the showcases I sign up for (Tuesdays are not great, by the way), I wouldn't be found at all. 2. How about a showcase for sellers who've had no sales? Of course it wouldn't be phrased that way, but it would help. Is there an Admin who monitors the 'no sales' situation? 3. Is there Content Control? I've recently noticed handbags that look manufactured & are being shipped from India. At Art Fairs I ran into the same problem from the same country & they were booted off the fairgrounds. This is something that should be investigated because the handbags are selling below market value for the amount of detail they have. 4. I like Maclancy's suggestion about a front page lottery and the reduction to one day for front page spots. 5. Tagging assistance, please. I've read the articles on tagging, have used logic and still nothing I do seems to be pulling 'em in. 6. Last but not least, how does one get on the gift guide? If the info is out there, I simply do not have the time to wade through the enormous and wonderful articles. I have a day job (thank goodness), but not for long. I'm being laid off in July. Thank you for your willingness to listen.

I love Etsy! From where I sit it is a great place to sell and buy, with lots of support, advice and opportunities. Etsy seems to take informing the sellers (and receiving their input) very seriously so thank you for that. I agree with the comments about advertising Etsy as a whole to a more mainstream audience, people who don't necessarily think about handmade, repurposed, funky "green" stuff but who would LOVE it if they knew about it. In case it wasn't clear: I REALLY REALLY LIKE Etsy! Happy sellers are happy buyers =o) When a lot of smaller ooak sellers left 'the giant', their sales took a nose dive. I like shopping as much as I like selling, I make a sale: I make a purchase. I sell here, I buy here. Please attract more Buyers through advertising and the circle will keep giving. Not to bang the vintage drum, but I do think people who enjoy vintage also enjoy quality handcrafts and ooak art. Look at Modernism Magazine, we advertise with them and their market is mid 30s to mid 40s, high triple digit income, they buy vintage mid century and original modern artworks. It's a cross over market of buyers. I think with an open ("Source for Handcraft and Vintage") inclusion of the Vintage and Supply sellers on the front page, it might calm some of the silly and childish posing in the forms such as the numerous "This is for Handmade Sellers ONLY" posts. Also it might be interesting to have some "experts" on staff who look through their areas/sections of expertise and flag items that look new or mass produced. If Etsy has a reputation for removing that sort of thing this early in the game, it will not become the problem that it has become on other larger sites drowning in millions of mass produced items.

Why does quality control seem so lax? 2) Why are items that are *blatantly* rule-breaking take so long to be removed from the site? And what other Etsians mentioned (sorry I can't remember who originally brought it up): 3) admin "office hours" on the forum would be great. 4) potential to rearrange shop items would be great, and if that's not technically feasible, have a bigger section for featured items (like dawanda) 5) I would like to see a transcript of the podcast too. I am a newer seller. My one complaint I guess would be that I sell jewelry on the site and it's one of the biggest things on Etsy, my items get covered up immediately and are on the 30th page after a few minutes. I understand that you have the search too but so many people post so many things that all of that seems to get covered up too... I have things on my site that have not been viewed since I started. I know that you have the feature sellers ... that have to pay for spots to get highlighted. But I think that instead of things being posted by date that it should all be mixed up and change. Everyone pays to post anyways - it really sucks because a lot of people do not want to look through 19000 pages to find the right thing for them, and even if we update and repay early it still gets covered back up in minutes. I think that it all should be mixed up - so that everyone can be seen all of the time - not just by date!

As for me, I'm still quite new to the community. I love Etsy and I am hoping to start my own little shop, but I have noticed a few things that might be worth trying out. 1. I would REALLY love to be able to organize my Favorites. There are so many options out there that it can be a little overwhelming when trying to track down something specific. Finding that needle in a haystack of 50 some odd pages just makes me want to give up sometimes. 2. I think both buyers and sellers would benefit from a shipping by weight/local shipping setup. It would save time and money. 3. Lastly, I would love to be able to refine the Feedback search. A separate category for Positive, Neutral, and Negative would help the buyer access the information needed more quickly. Good luck with the podcast and I look forward to seeing the end results :)

I enjoy communicating with etsy. I always get a timely personal reply which reinforces etsy's commitment to the individual. Maria, its sounds like you are wisely going to retain the handmade culture that's been created even as etsy expands exponentially. But to me, etsy can't thrive as a market place if only a small percentage of the sellers are successful. Sellers will eventually quit listing if they don't sell their work. We blog, facebook, flickr, twitter, advertise and research our market but next to the quality of the work, the Front Page is still the single biggest contributor to a shop's success. I have seen this Front Page success story first hand with more than one of my own team members. So why not share the wealth? Etsy could create a policy of exposure that limits the number of times a shop is shown and encourages front paging previously unseen sellers. There are amazing sellers that have been on etsy for more than a year with virtually no sales and this is discouraging to me as a seller. Advertising. Why doesn't etsy advertise on TV or major radio stations like NPR? Why not more print ads available when they always sell out almost immediately? Why not have your own etsy publication? Martha Stewart and Oprah have something to teach us all. Marketing. Etsy markets online to itself, the Young, the Hip, the computer savvy. Etsy buyers ARE Young and Hip BUT they are also the middle aged baby boomers. The baby boomers are a market with established bank accounts and I personally would like to see etsy acknowledge them more, market to them offline and make the etsy site easier for them to navigate. I often hear from baby boomers that they leave the etsy site after initially getting frustrated. Get them into the lab in your office where you can watch them navigate the etsy site in person. And as for the details, I would like to be able to rearrange the items in my shop as well as download multiple images at one time. I am not forgetting that so much is already so good about etsy...clean design, honest culture, smart people, great concept, creative products and especially the receptive attitude represented here...so the best of luck in this next stage of growth. I love the podcasts and recently listened to yours, Maria. I get positive vibes all around and know it's all going to be good in this year of the ox and beyond! Best, Shelly

Here's some things I'd like to see on Etsy, in no particular order: Ability to offer shipping options to customer such as First Class, Priority, Express, Etc. Then, during the checkout process, let buyers choose which shipping method they want from rather than having to convo back and forth or send a separate invoice. Relabel Shipping to Shipping & Handling. Ability to read convo text in the convo notifications sent from Etsy via email. Ability to archive convos and retrieve archived convos within etsy (however, if you at least read convo text in email, sellers could conceivably archive them via email). More shop sections and the addition of sub-sections. Ability to delete expired listings without having to relist. Ability for sellers to implement coupon codes that will allow sellers to reduce pricing by a set dollar amount and/or percentage. This would really be helpful for sellers who want to send coupon codes with orders, to encourage repeat buying. Ability to batch update prices for special sales and promotions. For example, a shop is have a 20% off sale from X date to X date. Or, a take X dollars off sale from X date to X date. Then, show the original price and the sale price with an end date in the listing. Ability to keep shop items visible while on vacation. More privacy for buyers, i.e., feedback between buyers and sellers is great but I don't see the need to link to the items that were purchased. More friendly CSV/Excel downloads. Ability to download entire shop inventory to a CSV, the ability to easily download monthly sales to a CSV, etc. Ability to see the last login date for a shop. It's a little frustrating to be a buyer and find out that the shop owner isn't actively monitoring activity for their shop.

It is annoying to have to spend time contacting the buyer because you want to give them the benefit of the doubt. After waiting, and hoping, and praying they pay (and they don't) you then have to contact etsy to cancel the sale, and hurry to leave a neg so you don't receive a retalitory neg. It is sad, but people get "bought" off the FP by people who never plan on paying. Such a waste of time for sellers, and it could be completely avoided by the buying not being able to remove the item from the store unless it is completely paid for. The only problem with this idea, what about checks and money orders? Anyone care to discuss? --------------------------------------------------------- Also, I think it is really important to implement a faster listing process like that on Artfire. I love Etsy. I too commend the Administration for always, always seeking to improve the site, communicate with sellers, and do their best to attract buyers. It's a tough job to please everyone, yet--that's exactly what you're expected to do, and I don't envy you. I love the Etsy community and I'm quite involved in the Storque and reading through the Forums as well. I just reread all of these posts, and it seems to me many people mention the front page exposure issue. I think I can understand, from Etsy's point of view, why a certain look is maintained on the site, and why certain sellers are selected repeatedly. Etsy has to keep the site looking attractive, so admin has to keep that in mind. Until recently, when Admin began selecting more front pages, front pages have been created by folks making treasuries, who select items that are their favorites. How do we find favorites? We often find sellers because, what do you know--we saw them on the front page before. Many items make it to the front page because--well, they are popular, they've been seen around the site, and the photography is skillfully done. Etsy is striving to make the site appear attractive and artistic. No offense to anyone here, but not every photograph of everyone's items (maybe not even some of my own) is really worthy of advertising Etsy by being on the Front page. I do agree that there should be more regulations about it, and it does seem that this is being done in part--Etsy is picking partial treasury lists to be represented, and selecting more of their own lists, but for the most part people make treasuries out of whatever they want...so it could be partially our own fault that there are repeated sellers featured...we keep adding their work to our treasuries. ;-) I agree though, many sellers are making lovely things and more effort should be made to "dig deeper," as one seller commented. But again, I love Etsy and am so proud to be a part of the community. It's a crowded place, and hard to stand out, but I believe if we all work hard to promote ourselves too we can find our niche here.

The main issue here is getting noticed on Etsy. All the other issues would be minimized if we all had more “notice time” We can correct our photos, improve our product, write good ad copy on each item, and price our items competitively. We can maintain blogs, keep spending money renewing our items, over and over again, and spend money on other kinds of advertising; I am paying for an ad on FaceBook. When we are finished there isn’t any extra time to read all the forums, articles, and other blogs, thank God I don’t have another job. What I need is more time to work on my craft not read more banter in the forums or even the many email notices I get from Etsy every day. What I need, what we all need, is more “notice time” more time on the front page or on the front page a category, for longer than a second. Since I am not a software programmer I won’t try to tell you how to fix it, all I can say is we need more “notice time”. Thank you for allowing me to share. Also our profile pages could be fully customizable, and that could be our one place to have fun with it and add personal photos. Maybe etsy could have a blog feature where sellers could post entries. We all pay the same fees, if we do the work to succeed--great photos, thorough descriptions, good business practices, we should ALL then be allowed to shine too. No acceptions. It is hard to find someone or to get found (and it is quit inconvenient to comunicate with each other, a direct contact the seller window would be nice). * It would be great to seperate the whole thing in three divided sections: handmade items / materials / vintage goods to have a better structure. * It would be great to have more space and tools to leave a personal impression for the buyers, like: pictures, little films, words and sound. And then: sure, everybody has its favorites, but I really think it cant be, that there are always the same shops on the front page or as picked items. There should be the same chance for every shop to be mentioned (even if the items are not Etsian Favs) don´t you think? Hello Etsy, I have asked over and over again and in many different ways, in many different places for Etsy to please support the writers that are supporting Etsy through their shops. I notice that books don’t get much attention from buyers and I believe this is because they aren't given as much support by Etsy as other areas get. For example, under the heading ‘books’, it is more usual to see notepads or journals than actual books. Books are the written/illustrated word, they are not journals. Books to write in are an entirely different section and therefore should be in an entirely different section. Books are also NOT a subsection of notepads. I have pointed this out to Etsy on a number of occasions but to no avail. The written word is a crucial and necessary aspect of society and I am surprised that Etsy doesn’t want to be part of that. I hope that Etsy will listen now and choose to support us writers as we love Etsy, but unrequited love is a tough thing to sustain. Thanks Bernard the Bat

Seeing more admin participation in the forums would also be very nice and helpful for all. Thanks for listening, S

100% agree with Mandalyns. Maybe mixing items listed in 24 hour period randomly would help. You list something and it is so far back it doesn't get seen. Especially if you list on weekends when thousands of others are listing all at the same time. How about number of items per page to view. Seems frustating. Thanks

I echo Sacheen I'd love to see a few new features that make is more user-friendly for Etsy sellers. Here's just a few examples: 1. ability to "edit this item" directly from the item page 2. ability to rearrange shop items 3. ability to convo buyer directly from receipt page 4. ability for buyer to convo seller about an item directly from the item page and have the item automatically referenced in the convo 5. ability to view only positive, only neutral, or only negative feedback (as opposed to having to scroll through all pages of feedback) 6. batch feedback and I'll add: 7. The ability to have a sale, say 50% off, and all items would automatically calculate and show the new sale price. These are suggestions that have been brought up by Etsy sellers (and buyers) time and time again in the forums. Thanks for listening!

First, thanks for caring enough to do this! Most of the time I feel lost in the shuffle! 1) I'd like to be able to rearrange items in my shop without continually relisting them! 2)Just what is the criteria for front page selection? I see the same sellers over and over on the front page--but in over a year, to my knowledge, none of my items have EVER been on the front page! Do you have to know somebody or what? 3)Personally, I LOVE vintage--but for the life of me, I can't understand why it was ever included on a site that advertises itself as all handmade..could we just get an explanation? Thanks for listening!

There are so many great comments here, and I'm sure these have been mentioned (if so, they need repeating, in my opinion): Mistagging: it is blatantly, continually abused. (and honestly, when you put the power to "advertise" in the hands of your sellers, it is no surprise that so much mistagging occurs). Resellers: even just one reseller on Etsy is too many. Please, please, please address how to eliminate them. Flagging just doesn't seem to work. The recent addition of the Advanced Search has been great, but I feel that Etsy is treading water, and updating the Search is really a band-aid for the bigger problem (mistagging and resellers). Finding a way to nip those problems in the bud seems to be the more proactive solution. (because a search will still yield incorrect results, no matter how specific it is....as long as sellers are incorrectly tagging their wares). Thank you.

I am wondering how to get an item of mine in the daily picks and on the main page. Is this done in an equitable manner. I also would like a currency converter. I might need one if I ever make a sale! I think a podcast is a good idea but if there is one, please include a written transcript. Some folks may not have the technology or they may be hearing impaired. I also want to urge you not to put so many extras that our costs will go up. At present, I stay with Etsy not because of sales-I have had one and that was my daughter. I find that Etsy gives forces me to have a written record of my selling price, materials, and decent photographs. I use this information when I do the craft shows to sell face to face. I am encouraged that I see more traffic coming to my sight now and I realize that these are not great economic times to sell jewelry. I really do enjoy the columns that you have now and barely have time to keep up with them. I find the chat rooms useless. The times I have tried them, there has been useless and inappropriate conversaation in them. I think they lower the "class" of Etsy.

I very much agree with BayMoonDesign-mistagging aka black hat SEO tactics are a problem. I do believe however, that the user should be able to determine their own keywords and be rewarded for using excellent ones and vice versa. This is how it works with search engines such as google. Users who resort to using black hat techniques are ranked lower than those with applicable and appropriate keywords. If Etsy could do that as well I think that would be a huge step in the right direction.

Maria, your decision to become more actively involved with the selling base can only help to improve the site. I admire your willingness to wade into this. I am still hoping for an ammended byline or an announcement of some sort on the home page to fully bring the supplies and vintage product lines into public awareness. After everyone emotes, ( :) and IT WILL HAPPEN, -- TOXIC threads will abound, until the purging of bile is completed.)I believe that with the proper inclusions, in time there is a much better potential for all 3 key areas to help promote each other and for all the potential sellers and customers to realize the full potential of this site. For the site to ad, " We are proud to announce that we have the supplies that you need and a flourishing vintage community", does NOT impact ALL THINGS HANDMADE. It expands the possibilites, and creates a platform for the site to compete effectively with Ebay, Michaels, AC MOORE, JoAnne's Fabric, etc, etc. The product line IS a unique blend. There have been enough startups within the past year to support my belief. There is alot of good already in place within Etsy. There is also alot that needs to improve. :) And can someone, please tackle the search and configure it to more closely resemble industry norms as far as catagory and function. Wouldn't it be better to grow a company utilizing the DIY concepts and to be able to look back one day and KNOW that an IPO wasn't needed? The potential IS here, if worked correctly.

I am very thankful for Etsy. It has allowed me to find the motivation and the vehicle to start creating the ideas I've been storing in my head. I am curious, with so many shops out there...why do I see repeat shops/products on the front page? I agree these products are unique and incredible and that these same products only help to enhance Etsy's front page appearance. But I can't help grumbling to myself. How are shops chosen for the front page? I am already aware of similar themes and color. After opening my shop, I've hesitated creating an inventory of the available products to photograph. Instead I'm using vector illustrations. My first product line is for custom orders and I feel that this would entail a lot of time and money just for imagery. I can't help thinking, however, that photographs are more beneficial for the buyer to visualize the product. Is this true? Or do my products stand out because they are presented differently? I look forward to the responses!

The look and ease and lack of nickel-and-diming the seller are the reasons why I love having an etsy shop. It's very clean and crisp - no harsh primary colors upchucking all over the place. It's very easy on the eyes here. I agree with BayMoonDesign about the chat rooms - have never been a part of that culture but it seems much like the Bathroom Wall thing in a pub. I like to see vintage items here and don't understand the culture against that - I often buy them to use in jewelry or art creations. DIY people have a creative funky streak and so do many vintage items - whether to collect or to upcycle. AustinModern's shop is an awesome resource for mid-century and she KNOWS HER STUFF. It can be an education to see shops like that, not to mention a valuable resource. Don't understand why favorites can be private and not purchases. I used to buy all my beads etc on ebay, then turn around and sell my creations under one non-private ID before I realized a place like etsy even existed. I'd rather see purchases private and favorites NOT private. What is the point of that?????? One last thing I've asked about before - can "U.S" be at the top in shipping, so I don't have to scroll up from U.S. Virgin Islands or Uganda, or whatever. Thanks!!!!

Also, I tend to agree with those above who suggest having a featured seller for only one day...it would give more exposure to more sellers. However, one of my best etsy buddies is the featured seller at the moment, and I am sooooo happy for her!!!

I say ditto to all the feedback about sorting favorites, convos on receipts, re-org of shop images, etc., etc. And I will be a broken record about the featured seller thing too. But what I want to say about it is, of course, I want to be on the home page, gift guides, Storque., etc. We ALL do! But my specific feedback is about the seeming lack of variety in styles represented on the home page from what I can see. I work a day job, so I’m not on all the time and may be off-base. Before I was a seller, I was an avid Etsy buyer and STILL am! I’m hooked on Etsy! LOVE it! But I’ve noticed that there is a certain look and feel that makes it to the home page. I’m not a good at specific fashion terms, but it seems very retro-vintage-vogue-sophisticated-Anthropologie-urban-hippy subdued… does that even make sense??? I LOVE the beauty of the page, and props to all that make it! But to see the same styles and same sellers over and over in styles that don’t inspire me to spend money on front-page items gets disappointing. I know you look for great photos, layouts, etc. But the styles you pick are mostly focused on a certain personal style. My personal style is loud bright colors, playful, funky, quirky… I also have the Anthropologie side, but mostly I wear more playful styles, and I hardly see any of that… that’s why I started making bag and purses myself!!! I get really excited when I see front pages that have bright reds or purples or other more playful styles. But there are a lot more playful and bold sellers I’ve seen that would appeal to an audience, like myself, an avid Etsy shopper, that don’t get reached by the featured sellers you show who all fit in with a seemingly “Etsy Style.” This has been something missing from when I was only a buyer, so it isn’t a plug. I still buy on Etsy and always will. You aren’t talking to my own tastes with the features, so I have to dig for stuff that fits my style. I’m sure I’m not alone. My 20 cents worth! More variety of styles on the front page and featured sellers!!! J

Dear Etsy, You guys are awesome and it's been a joy having a shop with you. There are however two changes I'd like to see go into effect to make Etsy more user-friendly. 1. Please provide a program where discounts and promotional offers can be factored into total purchase price BEFORE check out so that we would not have such a difficult time adjusting price, refunding via PayPal, and getting charged with fees each time. There must be a way to factor in percentage discounts or free shipping, because all major retailers do so. The current method of discounting is very unprofessional and discouraging. 2. Could we please get a search engine for the forums section? I find myself having to scroll through hundreds of posts just to see if my issues have been raised before. We need more organization to the forum dept. 3. It would be great if customers could choose their preferred method of shipping during check out (as most other retailers do). This way customers can see exact shipping costs based upon their location. Thank you for listening. :-) <3 Anna Banana

I am a very new shop owner, but here's a feature I would LOVE to see: being able to offer different prices for the same item. For example, for photographs, the customer could access a drop down menu that includes, "5x7 $20.00," "8x10 $35.00," etc. - Or for T-shirts or tops, "small $10.00," "Med. $15.00," etc. all in ONE LISTING. Some might say that this would cut into Etsy's profits because someone is paying $.20 for one listing instead of $.60 for 3 listings, but I have two rebuttals to that. One, as it is now, most people just write a comment that you can get other available "sizes" by e-mailing them, so they're not really re-listing them anyway. And two, if you're making the seller and customer experience better, it will bring more profits (by way of more sales) in the long run. Anyone else think this would be a nice feature?

Widgets for this will be really nice so you can customize the feel an look of your particular shop. - A makeup to the shop profile where you can embed videos pictures etc ( think widgets again) :) - Sections : add subsections so shops with a lot of items can organize the items much better. - Checkout process: ability to process credit cards. still this is an issue with new buyers, they have no clue how to pay. :( Forums - Ability to subscribe to a thread and get the posts emailed to you (not RSS) like other forums out there on the web Virtual Labs - Ability to scroll up and down the messages - Ability to record the session so it can be seen at a later time if you miss it (like in Live Meeting) That is all what I can think right now. That is why I prefer the written word ... it allows one to read when one can find the time. I would hope you'll make transcripts available. I do have a few issues with etsy, however. It seems to be progressing towards a Flea Market (like eBay stores), rather than sticking with hand-made items. I also just un-subscribed to etsy Finds because there was too little art and almost no photography represented. It was way too much about things, most of which were NOT hand-made. If that changes, please advise, and I will re-subscribe. I would also request that the sub-sections within photography be enlarged to include: people, man, woman, children, animals, flowers, manipulated, b&w, landmarks, cityscapes, architecture, bicycles, sports, music, dance, etc. The way it is now makes it too hard for people to narrow their search. Lastly, I never see any advertising for etsy in general. There is nothing but personal word-of-mouth driving people to the site. Perhaps you could take one line ads showing the URL in the back of magazines and in the Village Voice and on Craig's List? Thanks.

This is great! I am particularly interested in seeing a better buyer's/shopper's experience. The website is so HUGE, so many sellers and products that for the novice buyer wanting to shop quickly and efficiently, the task is daunting. I suggest: 1. Better, broader Store type Categories with more world-wide accepted departments or sub-categories beneath them. "Home Decor" should not be a sub-category of "Houesewares". Makes it sound like an Ace Hardware Store or similar! Home Decor and Design should be its own Category and be sub-divided into "Accessories, Furnishings, Bed and Bath, etc. including room-by-room such as dining, bedroom, living. Kitchen items should stay in "Housewares". 2. The Art category is way too amaturish and needs to be refined into proper sub-categories including "Fine Art", One of a Kind, Functional Art, Cottage Crafts, Traditional Craft, Contemporary Craft. Buyers of Art recognize these categories. 3. There really needs to be more appropriate Departments to aid the buyer in locating the desired product.

Being forced to making a new store and lose all of your positive feedback because you didn't know what you were doing when you started out is ridiculous... 2) What is Etsy doing to advertize itself? I had no idea Etsy even existed and finally found out about you guys in such a long, convoluted way, it was pathetic. I have never seen a commercial or radio spot or even banners on other popular web sites advertizing Etsy. If you advertized for yourself, you would be doing it for all of us, the newbies, the pros, all of us. I twitter and all that like everyone else, but we can't do it alone. There is only so much social networking a stay-at-home mom or craftsman can do alone. If you advertized more (at all), we would get more sales, you would get more fees. It is a win/win situation.

    4. "Outdoor" and "Flower and Garden", should be added to main Categories as they encompass many other sub-categories from sculpture to water features and mosquito netting. 5. I think the "Front Page" should be open to Sellers to buy a spot rather than left up to Etsy staff. While it is a fabulous honor to be chosen, it feels too subjective a use of space and could be made more available to sellers who wish to be seen there. I feel the same about "Gift Guides", sellers could better use these spaces to merchandise themselves in spots that buyers are drawn to. "Gift Guides" is a magnet for sales and sits unchanged for way too long. Sellers need access to these prime marketing spots to advertise! Etsy staff can feature individual sellers elsewhere on the site.

hi, can anything be done about the feedback system? the buyer can leave neutral (unfair) feedback without ever even communicating their concern with the seller. i had a buyer that did not read the description of the item and left me ugly neutral feedback without ever even contacting me! another one just left me neutral feedback about having to cut the labels to get them in the tabs?? what? she never communicated her concern to me. i would have made her personalized tabs or reimbursed her or something...!..! this seems very unfair and gives the buyer way too much power over the seller. please - make it a part of the etsy etiquette that you must first contact the seller and try to work out the concern before you can leave neutral feedback. this will give the seller a chance to remedy the problem -or not. i would do everything in my power to make a customer happy - but how can you when they can just leave any comment they want without any guidelines!? please help! that situation really upset me. i have over 100 postive comments about my quality, fast shipping, good communication... i realize there are going to be some folks in this world that you can never please. but the current etsy feedback system does not allow for the seller to stand up for themselves and their shop. thank you so much for listening, cathy

Please make it more of a priority to attract shoppers, instead of just potential sellers. Please let item remain in our shops until they are paid for, when buyers pay with PayPal. Please have the option of showing way more items per page when searching or browsing. Like 50, 100, 500 items. It's easy to scan the page for photos that catch our eyes. Please stop changing members treasury's when they are chosen for the front page, unless items are breaking rules. Please use more of member created treasuries for the front page. Many think they are even better than admin created front pages. Then admin could have more time for doing other things like answering emails, removing re-sellers, and attending to flagged items. Please share more detailed stats with us each month. Like sales stats per category, by day, and time, and what percentage of new members are sellers only vs. buyers. Please try and respond to the topics that continue to be brought up in the fora, over and over. Please show sellers that we matter to you and that you care what we have to say. Sometimes we feel ignored.

wow you folks are brave to ask for any and all suggestions all at once! we etsians sure are a creative bunch and we tend to know what we want ;) i would love for buyers to have a specific place to enter a ship to address (other than their own address.) the VAST number of my customers purchase my items as a gift for someone else. many times they ask me to ship directly to the gift recipient. this really makes so much sense especially when the buyer and recipient of the gift are in different states. why would i ship to the buyer and then they turn around and ship it to the recipient? that is wasteful and not a good use of our resources. a friend of mine who i turned on to etsy tried to purchase something to be sent directly to the gift recipient and was very upset when it was sent to her instead! why not make this more clear cut? simply have one area for billing address, and one area for shipping address. this would take a lot of the guess work out of it. i am always checking and double checking and awfully paranoid that one of these days i am going to miss non-matching paypal and etsy addresses and send to the wrong person. if you are able to implement this change, why not also add a field for text for a card? in this case when i am mailing to a gift recipient and not to the buyer directly, i always offer to include a small card with the buyer's greeting on it. it would be SO wonderful if there was an option to ask the buyer what they would like put on a card while they are checking out. (sellers could opt in to this using a shop setting, in case some don't want to offer this service.) thanks so much for being concerned and responsive to our requests!

In an effort for Etsy to further branch out into the e-commerce world, it would be nice if you could develop some kind of interface where we could upload all our wares and profile info onto one site and hit a button at the bottom say, that could upload our recently loaded wares to all the sites we would like to advertise on. You could charge a small fee for this. Please make it small...You would be the go between for all e-commerce entities. Is this even possible?

LOVE to be able to rearrange my store (like my very own treasury) We were lucky enough to be featured in 3, THREE! treasuries in one week! Then I looked and saw they there are 20 PAGES of treasuries! So hats off to the treasury makers! With that in mind: I have to agree with another poster above that admins spending their time creating treasuries seems like a waste of time when so many are already well edited and created ready for use. Someone above made the following comment:"... If that changes, please advise, and I will re-subscribe." End This is a solid reflection of the feeling held by some very good artists towards the vintage sellers. It's unfortunate and Etsy could easily end this bad feeling with the simple inclusion of the word VINTAGE on the front page. And then policing the vintage sections for new items that are "vintage style" **By the way, the most recent Get the Look showcased an item tagged vintage but is described as "BRAND NEW Vintage Style" This isn't calling out, it's illustrating a point. Myself and other vintage sellers such as YouKnowUNeedAnother and Hand crafted jewelry artists like MythUnderstood who use vintage findings are kind of taken aback that many artists feel that vintage sellers have some how forced their way into Etsy or have somehow snuck in through a backdoor. Etsy's turning a blind eye to "the vintage problem" is kind of weird. I have not been here long, but my sales are strong, when I found Etsy I saw that there was a vintage category and a strong presence of knowledgeable antique and collectible dealers here. So I though Etsy was looking for us. To read the boards at Auction Bytes, it seemed that we were being openly courted by Etsy. It's a little weird to feel like there is a strange undercurrent of "we'll take your money for a full price ticket, but you need to sit in back and be quiet". What is that all about? For all I know its a small but vocal minority of artists who feel that vintage and creative art does not go hand in hand. I have a newsflash for the artists who do not care for vintage: Vintage Buyers often turn into Antique collectors as they get older and gain more knowledge. Antique buyers are often huge contemporary art collectors as well. We can work very well together and compliment each other quite nicely. Any art gallery owner is thrilled to bits to have an antiques store as a business neighbor, and vice versa. Please consider an open announcement that we were asked to join and vintage sellers are not some type of kudzu to 'grin and bear'.

It used to be that when someone asked me about Etsy I'd just tell them "it's kind of like eBay but everything is handmade" Now when people ask I find myself saying "it's kind of like eBay only everything is, is supposed to be handmade - you just have to sift through the junk to get to the good stuff" It is downright depressing to spend 10 or 15 minutes on 'pounce' only to find myself so fed up with 'not vintage' and resellers. I'm not talking about supplies - though scrapbooking supplies still wrapped in factory plastic make me wince. I hope Etsy isn't too involved in branding it's name & getting more business allowing anyone to open a store. It stinks for the small ooakinders who don't mind staying small. I worked for Starbucks during their huge expansion only to see a good company become mediocre. I'd hate to see that happen to Etsy.

My items are expensive and the fees can add up when I have sale. I also would love to see us over 40 acknowledged on Etsy. We are powerful consumers yet, I feel like Etsy is embarrassed to have us on the site. I too feel like etsy wants to be a flea market. Etsy has world's most talented and undiscovered artists yet, all I see is same trendy items with price tag of under 30dollars and same cute shops with same price range. I can tell you few jewelry shops that have at least 3 items on gift guides through out the year and I can tell you at least handful of shops that will knock your socks off! I would love to see Etsy promoting its diversity and give a spot light to some deserving artists!

Thanks for taking the time to listen to the sellers. I've been so happy with changes you've already made in checkout and search and am thrilled there could be more improvements on their way in other areas, too. I'm just coming up on my 6th month as a seller and have loved having a shop here and most things are great. But 6 months is just enough time to figure out what could be better. I think everything on my wishlist has been stated above, but I'll just add my vote to the following: 1. really wish items weren't removed from shop until the buyer has actually paid. 2. batch photo upload when listing 3. ability to rearrange my shop without relisting 4. some sort of "list similar" or "copy this item" function would make listing a lot easier. 5. I'd love to organize favorites somehow. 6. tag abuse can get pretty bad. can it really hurts everyone. It's hard enough to get your items seen in searches and it's awful when your item is pushed back to page 4 by items that have absolutely no business being in that category or search result. that's it for now. Again, thanks for listening.

I attended a virtual lab today about networking. Being in the over 40 crowd and not too tech savvy, I felt that I'd benefit from this workshop on Networking put on by Danillexxo and Willotoons at the Summit for Awesome in D.C. What I absolutely LOVED about this was the feeling of relationship to the speakers and feeling enjoined to learn about their topic. The Q & A format was casual but moved at a good pace, the openness and authenticity of these women, their passion for their crafts and their friendships were very apparent. It felt like an old fashioned quilting bee only high tech. It felt like relationship and sharing which is the heart of networking. Right? Anyway, just a few words of praise for one of the many things that are right about our Etsy. I too, would like to see a bit more exposure of 'the elders' of our community. Some of us, many of us, are starting over and we are starting here. We have stories worth telling, products and ideas and experiences to share. I love the idea of Talking Shop via podcast, tell me when and where and I'll be there. My question is: Is the idea of a separate 'place' for Vintage and another for Supplies within ETSY, still on the table and being considered? Last May, Matt graciously met with Vintage sellers and outlined this idea in broad strokes. Has there been any further discussion or movement in that direction? Thank you for all that you are doing so very, very well!

I stumbled upon Etsy last August and immediately fell in love with this site. I want to thank you for giving Vintage a place among the art. I am a little surprised to hear grumbling about vintage being included with the hand-made items. It seems to me vintage and art are perfect partners. Buyers of both tend to be interested in both yet, I don't think sales of one category takes away from the other. Instead, they probably compliment each other when a buyer looking for something vintage can't help but look around and stumbles on some adorable creation which prompts them to look further. I was able to walk away from my E-xxx store I haven't looked back except to sell the occasional not-quite vintage item. I am an Etsy convert. I agree with many previous suggestions, including: * being able to offer sales without having to edit individual items * being able to easily let the client choose method of shipping without having to convo. * being able to delete expired items which won't be relisted My sales tend to follow my effort. When I have time to list new items regularly my sales reward me. I truly couldn't be happier.

Thank you for asking our opinion, and there have been some very relevant suggestions here. A couple I would like to point out in particular that we have been asking for for a while, such as being able to arrange our favourites, and buyer privacy. But I would also like to add the International Issue, it would be nice for the showcase to expire at different times for those of us not in the U.S. who are not actually awake (normally) when the showcases or advertising opportunities become available. Being able to chose your currency would also be a bonus for us non-U.S. sellers. I do agree with the person that mentioned that Etsy is not as well known as I though, nearly every time I mention it to people who are artists/indie/handmade types it is rarely known. They are not usually technophobes either. Could be something to consider in terms of creating more advertising opportunities for the site and it's sellers. Apart from that, thanks and great idea to reach out in different ways.

I have a 30% of my items that are hand-woven and if they are jewelry imagine how difficult it is to find them in such and enormous universe. The same with bags and purses... but I've seen a lot of talented artists who made weavings and I bet they would love to see their items well categorized. 2. Rearrange items in my shop 3. Bulk photo uploading 4. For products who are lost in time (according to the date they were published)is there a possibility of doing a search by: items about to expire? and this would include items 24 hours before they go. 5. Privacy for buyers (it is OK with feedback, but is a little bit too much to know what they bought) Thanks again for letting us know you care.

It seems my things would be very well received if only I could get up there where people can see me. I race to see my newly listed items, and seems like I always see other's things go by 4 or 5 times, mone only once. Poor me!! Yes, it would be wonderful if Etsy could advertise in fashoion mags, etc. for better recognition by our market. What people don't know about they will not act upon. I think the site is too complicated. With over a million vendors, one can see why. I use it only for reference to potential customers, a catalogue of currently available items in my collection. Arranging our own material would be nice especially if itshows across the page instead of vertically. The larger blocks allow people to see more easily what you have to offer, and I think it has a greater visual impact. Also, I would love to see a new category for jewelry sets. I produce matching sets of necklaces and earrings and some people have matching bracelets and to list these items separately may cause the break up of the set. I know I often do not have enough material to make others to match and I'm sure other artisans are in the same boat. If you want to charge more for set listings, that is understandable and think of the space that would save on the site, two to three... reduced to one! If I list as a set I cannot get into the necklace showcase, etc. and its a hassle to re-write your descriptions. Please seriously consider this new category, it might ease some of the jewelry traffic so we don't end up on page 165 when we list!

They also promised in the 'makeup' statement to me that i would receive a gift for doing so. i never received it - i dont care about the gift - its just another reason this seller isn't going to get my business ever again - a shame cause i liked their items. neutral isnt as bad a rating as i was treated from this seller prior to purchase and then after 'making up'. I would change my rating to negative if i could right now.

I'm relatively new to the etsy world, and I'm having trouble breaking through all the clutter (like so many others, I'm sure). My necklaces and bracelets, all bold, African-inspired beaded adornments were a bit of a hit when I first opened my shop...I sold two pieces that first night, but nothing since. I'm interacting and blogging as fast as my fingers can type, but I need some promotional help. Oh, I've also participated in two showcases. Was lucky enough to land two. But I'm not sure what kind of exposure I got...not many hits on my site. Any advice would be much appreciated.

And I should have said that, along with the option to delete 'expired' and 'inactive' listings, it would be fabulous to be able to edit them, as well. It really makes no sense to renew or relist if the info is no longer current. If a price needs to be changed, shipping updated, or listing details clarified, it is best to do that *before* any buyers get a chance to see it. Seriously.

Thank you so much for asking! I would like to see that each category has an editor or curator (or consultant) that can oversee content, and liaison ideas and concerns from sellers to admin. We need someone with experience and background in vintage to oversee vintage. An art professional to oversee and clarify the art categories. Maybe other areas would benefit from this as well, jewelry, etc. If etsy has clear guidelines, categories, and tagging system the seller will follow suit. There are a lot of knowledgeable people here who should not have to spend hours on the forums hashing out ideas when it is unclear if admin will respond. For more ideas for your podcasts see: the Forums.

I have a few suggestions... 1. I've visited another site where, when buyers are in a particular shop, they can see if the seller is online or not. If they are online, they are able to chat directly with the seller. As a seller, I think it would be so beneficial to chat with the buyers as they are browsing our shops. If questions are answered immediately, buyers may be more likely to buy. 2. It would be great if there was a way to be notified by Etsy (via an auto-convo) when a seller is featured ANYWHERE - treasuries, front page, gift guides, etc. 3. I'm also down for sorting favorites, convos on receipts, reorganization of shop images, and bulk 5-photo upload. 4. Batch tagging would be AMAZING!!! A lot of my items require the same tags and it seems that tagging is what takes the longest during new item listing. 5. Speaking of tagging, what is the rule on unrelated tags? I see all kinds of sellers tagging inappropriately. Thanks so much for allowing us all the opportunity to suggest these (hopefully) future features! Etsy rocks and we all just want it to rock even more! :)

Thank you Etsy for listening :) First I would like to say that I am a self professed Etsy addict! I love selling and Buying on Etsy. Such a talented group of people make up your community! 1. Can you please explain the new listing process. I understand that you list an item and it may/may not show on the time machine, and that Etsy has up to a certain amount of time to post it on the search pages, but I have looked and it seems that sometimes the listing will show up and then not be there when I go back the second time. This new way of listing has brought up alot of negative discussions in the forums and on the street teams I am involved in. 2. If the treasuries are made as someone in the Etsy communities expression of "art" (I thought that was what they were when I originally joined) then is it really fair to delete or replace certain items. In the creator's eyes that was part of the whole picture. Or is the treasury just a marketing tool? 3. I agree with comments above. I think it's great that you offer a co-op for advertising, but I feel the Etsy community works very hard to promote your site (I know my mouth is always going on and on about Etsy). Why doesn't Etsy do some self promoting? Why not take out some ad space somewhere? NY times on Sunday? One of the many magazines? Your company can only benefit from the marketing. Again, thank you for listening:)

It seems that a top priority for Etsy is to find a way to allow sellers to move their wares around in their shops. Yesterday I had to delete an item I felt was getting lost on page 4, take the time to find the photos, rewrite the description, etc. It sold a 1/2 hour later. Please let us know why we are not able to do move our things around. Thanks, and many thanks for your openmindedness and your interest in our welfare. It really is appreciated.

I love Etsy and have 2 shops here. Beyond having my shops, I also like to buy on Etsy. One feature I always wish was better is the way users can access items from their favorite sellers. I think it would be fantastic to be able to search your favorite sellers and favorite items for item tags, titles, and descriptions. This would not only improve a buyers experience but boost shop sales because people would easily be able to find the things they had meant to buy easily. Thanks for being a great organization. I am so grateful for all of the good work you do promoting independent artists, designers, and shop owners.

I know I'm mirroring some of the other comments left but maybe it will help get the noticed. And first and foremost, I would like to thank etsy for having a site like this that gives others the opportunity to try and succeed at what they love doing. With that said: 1. Why does it seem like the same sellers get front page spots? I sometimes see different ones but the ones I see the most, I go to their shop page and they have thousand of sales. I feel like these people already have a stable client base and don't need as much "publicity". I also understand that stores that make that many sales make more money for etsy, but I would also like to see others stores be given that chance. 2. Why haven't I seen really any advertising for etsy lately? 3. The way that information is organized on the site in storique and blog are a little confusing and sometimes hard to find. As a new shop, I did what I was told. I read the sellers guide, try to search for questions that I had, but, sadly there are still alot of questions that I have. My suggestion is, what if you add a section on each "article/blog" that says "tag how this article helped you"? It would give other sellers the chance to state which article help about photos, choosing a shop name, or advertising ideas (just to state a few). This might be helpful for new shops to find information. I have had a hard time with the search option on the blogs and stuff Thanks again for giving a place to state people ideas and opinions!!!

I am new to Etsy and look forward to finding time to take part in all forms of communication with other crafters. I will be listing items soon - this is a busy time for me getting ready for my summer shows/fairs. I would like to have some discussions about how to handle people problems at shows, in stores or even with internet sales - both customer and crafter problems. An example is a crafter I see at many shows who doesn't sell a lot, but considers herself an artist not a crafter. She spends her time at shows going from table to table to tell the rest of us a better way to do our craft - even when she really doesn't know anything about that craft. I do not want to hurt her feelings but she doesn't stop talking when customers come to my area even though I have tried to politely explain that customers come first. Some of the other crafters run or hide when they see her coming. It is a bit sad.

One thing that occurred to me is it would be nice to be able to transfer listings from one shop to another. For instance, I had supplies listed in my regular finished jewelry shop and then let those expire and opened a supply shop to keep them seperate, but I had to list things from scratch when it would have been much easier to just renew the ones expired in my jewelry shop directly into my supply shop. As for how to communicate (I'm not sure what a Podcast is. Is it something broadcast on an Ipod?), but maybe having more staff assigned to answer questions and communicate with people on Etsy would be the best way to communicate with people. Oh, one other thing; what ever happened with the live shows some street teams were having at Etsy labs? I asked a few times how my team might get on the schedule and never received any answer by e-mail or convo.

Oh also, it would be great to be able to set up sales in advance by entering in between which dates the sale would run, on all or certain specified items, and at what percent off and have that automatically deducted at check-out so that it wouldn't have to be done manually each time. The only other thing I can think of at this time is further optimization to bring more serious buyers to Etsy from elsewhere targeted to the top level categories here. We need less casual browsers and more who are coming here really intending to buy. Thanks for taking this feedback into account.

Thank you for the opportunity, Maria! I just finished reading the whole thread... First, I want to say I agree with maclancy, you could have one day out of each month and devote a FP using a lottery method to retrieve shops. I understand that Etsy wants to keep a certain look but Etsy is getting really big, thanks to Supplies and Vintage, and they should be featured. I love most of FP, dont get me wrong but I have to agree that it is not really democratic and quite elitist... I agree with PetitPoulailler and Green Mamba concerning the Fora, you need more sections. I agree with OhFaro's comment! All the way, she clearly defines the needs of many sellers. But... I did not find anything about....Fine Arts. My shop is eclectic but 90% of my items are originals, no reproductions but with the tagging the way it is set on Etsy, I cannot compete with other shops. My originals are too affordable. You should approach an art consultant to set the tags for the Art section, it is very poorly made. It seems like Fine Arts is viewed in 19th century terms. Thank you again for letting us express our views.

Podcasts? Sorry, I dont get it. Read the forums and you will see that maybe 10 issues/concerns come up over and over and over.... and over. Anyway, my main hesitation about returning are resellers and that search still needs some work. (Maybe reduce the number of tags so folks dont get creative with these). I've also never understood Etsy Labs. What gives with craft classes? Most of us know our craft and if we dont, its pretty easy to find info on the web. Couldn't staff be better used in another way? Same with the proposed forthcoming 'tips' for sellers. Etsy members have written tons of these and they are super. So that work has ALREADY been done and perhaps just needs to be collected into a central location.

One idea I have that will make the forums more enjoyable is if purchases were private. I'm not talking about feedback, but a purchase that doesn't have feedback on it yet. This way, someone could ask a question on the forum about a purchase they made without calling out. As long as the buyer didn't say anything on purpose to point out which seller they may be having an issue with, other etsy members can give them advice without being able to see who is the perp. It will probably also greatly cut down on the emails the admin get about buying.

I have one request... New Tagline. Etsy, Your Place for All Things Handmade..... {{add two words}} ..................and MORE! I WANT this site to stay focused on handmade, it's why I joined. :) I only became a Vintage seller **because** of Etsy. But when folks join Etsy they get misled by the Tagline and some take it out on the Vintage community as if it was a Coo... and we took over the site. (And not one Admin steps into these threads to defend us by saying 'they are here because we want them here'...) By letting folks know in your Tagline that there is so much MORE to Etsy besides all the incredible artisans here, your focus can remain in tact, but at the same time, alert people to the REST of the amazing shops on the site.... who are here at your invitation. No one wants to change Etsy, we just want to be treated fairly. We don't need a Pod Cast, we need a solution. Respectfully, Lora

I agree with CarolBradley, and many others, with respect to tag misuse. It seems to be deliberate, as many offending sellers have 500 to over a thousand sales). There are no consequences to deter one from breaking the rule ever and over. It seems a solution might be to prevent a tag from being used (blocked) if another has already been selected. Or have main sub-categories that are fixed. For instance, if you select dress as a tag, then a skirt may not be used-becomes unavailable. As most people would agree, a skirt cannot be a dress. Just as earrings could not be confused for a necklace, and therefore should not be found in the necklace category. Maybe a separation of tags and categories. Tags would then be used as title and description searches (or advanced item search), instead of the main categories found on the side bar of screen. Perhaps have a monetary penalty for repeat offenders? I think this tag misuse prevents buyers from shopping, especially if they don't have time to look through all the skirts, hairclips, bibs, and tees to find a dress! When a buyer is in the "children" section, and clicks on clothing, then skirts, there should not be hair clips, shoes, dresses, or NON-SKIRT items. But this is what a buyer has to deal with. Frankly (in my opinion), it makes the etsy site seem unprofesional.

I've put some thought into this and I've grouped my suggestions into categories. I apologize for this being so long. Tags: -- As GreenMamba said, the content team needs to tell sellers *why* the item has been tagged. The content team could get so much more done if they didn't have to keep clarifying why something is mistagged. -- There are sellers out there who fix tags... and then start mistagging again. I'd like to see the content team follow-up on sellers after the tags have been fixed. I'd also like to see consequences for repeated mistagging offenses. -- Admin-selected items for the FP, GG, and Storque (and anywhere else) should be at least double-checked to ensure that they agree with the TOU. Otherwise, admin is sending out the message that mistagging isn't important. -- If mistagging isn't important, tell us. Communication: -- There are many, many, many instances where etsy Admin do not reply to convos or emails in a timely manner, if at all. You say you want to improve communication... so why not walk the talk and start with answering each and every email or convo? -- Currently when buyers or sellers ask questions of admin in the fora, they aren't answered by admin... or admin convos/emails them; either way, the answer isn't made public. Many of these questions aren't calling out, so why shouldn't they be answered? -- Different admin post different answers to the same question, causing HUGE confusion. ALL admin should be able to find and give the same answer, instead of (appearing to) make stuff up on the spot. Internationalization: -- If etsy really wants to be international, then holiday marketing/advertising need to start at least six weeks in advance of the date. Nevermind the fancy new monthly themes; there are many, many people out there that shop for events, like Mother's day, Father's day, graduation, Easter, Halloween, Valentine's Day, and so on. -- Show USD everywhere. Everywhere a price exists, show that it's in USD. -- Provide a currency converter. Etsy-chosen sellers: -- The FP, GG, and Storque have many, many repeated sellers. Of course their product is good - but there are *other* good products out there. Why not feature sellers other than admin's favourite? -- Put policies in place so that admin need to double-check their chosen items to ensure that they don't violate the TOU or DND. Maybe even make it mandatory that a second person check each person's choices... like a code review. I'm embarrassed when I see admin-chosen items in these public places that violate the TOU by mistagging or being a reseller or whatever. Thank you for asking for our comments. I sort of feel like I'm wasting my time posting my comments, though, since these same comments and suggestions have been made over and over and over and over and have been ignored. It doesn't even appear that changes have been made behind-the-scenes, because nothing has changed since these comments started surfacing. We've already given you the suggestions and comments and ideas... and to me it seems that each time we give them in response to your request, the major issues are ignored. If you really mean that you want to improve communication, please prove it by addressing some of the harder, more uncomfortable questions/comments/suggestions that have been made repeatedly. Like admin-chosen FP. And mis-tagging. And lack of communication.

It would be great to have a permanent location for a ToDo list (the "Esty Pipeline", perhaps?) where members can keep abreast of upcoming new features and upgrades. As I've said in the past, this need not be super detailed, nor reveal any trade secrets, etc. Just a list of a few items that are at the top of Etsy's priority list and already nearing completion/release date. And another oldie but goodie: please switch the placement of the shop announcement with the featured items. Having the announcement first means that a visitor may not see any items at all without scrolling, depending on the length of the announcement. Also, for those viewing in Gallery Mode, there is virtually no distinction between the featured items and the rest of the shop. So, it just seems to make more sense to have the featured items on top of the announcement. (Just want to say that I appreciate you keeping up with this, Maria. Am looking forward to the podcasts - and to the positive improvements to come.)

    1) Those of us with hundreds of items NEED MORE SECTIONS OR SUBSECTIONS!!!! I have cut way back on my listings on etsy until more sections (or subsections) are available. One hundred items in a section is too many. 2) Again, sellers with lots of active items need the ability to SEARCH for active items from within admin in order to delete or edit. If I need to remove or edit an item, I have to search via the "hit and miss" method. 3) Sellers also need to be able to search "sold" items. I finally have the ability to do this thanks to another etsy seller who devised an app through GreaseMonkey, but it's something that should have been done by etsy admin. 4) I need to be able to make notes about sales beside the sale. The ability to add a tracking # that is automatically sent to the buyer would be great (as is done on ArtFire). 5) Please let me delete expired listings. Many of these are items that I have depleted from stock and will never sell again. 6) In "Items Sold", separate paid items from unpaid items. 7) "Sell Similar" feature for adding new items. 8) Allow more than five images. (Take care of #5 above and you would retrieve lots of space.) 9) Automatically submit items to Google (as is done on ArtFire, eCrater, etc. These items have been begged for in the "Ideas" forum for over a year. It's a great place to see what etsians feel is important.

    1. I would love to see a Bulk Uploader with templates. Just uploading multiple images at once once would be great! I would also like to be able to use my Enter Key when listing Tags and not have to physically put the cursor back in the box for the next tag because I didn’t use the Etsy button. Batch editing would be great too! 2. I would like to see transcripts of workshops or this podcast made available. I often miss them because of RL commitments or because it is raining and Satellite Internet is not working or I didn’t know about it or I get the time zone wrong. 3. This may anger some, but I don’t think that Vintage will be disappearing from Etsy. Vintage is growing and melds wonderfully with Handmade! Both have knowledgeable and whimsical buyers who value the unusual. Better yet- decorating trends show that Handmade and Vintage are being used together. Etsy needs to use that to promote both kinds of items. 4. I would like to see my listings Text in Searches for Supplies and Vintage categories not just Title and Tags. 5. I appreciate budgets and feel that Etsy is doing a wonderful job of publicizing the site. I am not sure what is being done- but Press Releases are Free Publicity. The Bay puts out 15-20 each day so they have many reasons to be picked up as a news story. 6. I would like to see Etsy Admin take time once a year and tell us what the Game Plan is as far as to what direction the Site will be taken for the year. Maybe if we knew that International Sales for example were targeted we could help by aiming our own listings and promotions in that direction. 7. I would like some guidance about how to optimize my listings for searches (Etsy and Internet) as far as Key Words, Titles and Tags. I know there is info given by many- but I honestly feel like I am missing something and often things contradict what someone else says. Seems Etsy Searches are different than Internet searches. I am not sure about this 8. I would like to see front page Categories reflect Vintage and Supplies available. 29 Categories that are Exclusively for Handmade and 1 each for Supplies and Vintage , when these categories are most likely major income producers for you, is not equitable. If a major Category can include both Handmade, Vintage and Supplies, I think there should then be a subcategory giving choice. For example, the Quilting Buyer who clicks on Quilts could have a choice of buying a New Handmade Quilt, Vintage Quilt, Quilter’s Supplies, and Quilting Books. It seems to me that new users would find the current categories confusing when they may be looking for items not handmade. 9. I love Etsy and am looking forward to changes for the better! Seems as if there are a lot of issues here that aren’t my issues, but with so many people caring about the site only good can come from this opportunity to speak. Thanks Etsy!

I love SeewEnglishes strolling through the site idea!!!!! I've often been bored and just wanted to window shop around Etsy, but really didnt have something specific to look for. The site really isn't set up for that so I just got frustrated, and logged off. If there was an organice brousing feature, maybe something that took my favorite in mind when it chose the items to stroll throgh I would be glues to it for hours, and probably buy tons of stuff! not to mention have it on the background of my work computer to check periodically through the day. What a nice way to give expoiser to shops that I would have probably never seen otherwise.

I would like to know: -will there every be a search added to sellers sold items?Currently it is almost impossible to figure out if people are repeat buyers or how many times I have sold a certain item. A suggestion would be able to search our sold items by title or buyer. -when will folders or some other type of organization be added to favorites? I know this was talked about at some point. -being able to convo a buyer directly from the sold page would be really helpful. Is it possible this might be added? Thanks so much for listening!

hi thanks for this new idea sounds like a good one. i am having a hard time figuring how to get my store seen and how to advertise it any suggestions. also i think vintage sellers need more exposure and there should be handmade and vintage items stated on home page. when i was looking at this site i saw handmade and almost passed it up for selling because i thought it was just a handmade artist site to sell on. but there are plenty of vintage sellers that do well i feel i have done ok for the little bit of time i have been on. thanks for hearing me kathy

Hi there! I think Etsy is an amazing avenue that allows access to sellers of extraordinary talent and creativity. However, I feel that there is a disconnect between the buyer and the seller. There are some amazing stories out there on who is making products but just the profile page isn't enough to really get to know a seller. I realize that there are other places (flikr, facebook, etc.) but I'm busy and I don't want to have to go to another site. I would like to see us be able to upload more pictures, include more behind the scenes type stories, and videos of us making our crafts or tours of our studios, etc. I realize that we're talking about a major drain on the servers and all the resulting bandwith issues, but please check into what it would take as I think it would really help personalize this community which is exactly what you want to do with this new podcast series. Thanks for caring enough to listen! Best Regards, The Reparapy Team

I am happy to see you are asking us for input. I would like to see vintage and supplies given proper credit in all ways. If I am looking for a vintage item or a supply, I hate being taken back to handmade by default. I would like to see the integrity of treasuries respected again. It takes a lot of time to make a treasury. Some of them are works of art in their own right. I would like to see more variety on the front page and gift guides. Seeing page after page of cheap hipster items gives a false impression of Etsy. You may have a headquarters in Brooklyn but the people who really make Etsy successful are all over the world. Maybe you could hire some curators who really understand arts and crafts, color and design. Your front page is basically a turn-off. When featuring international crafters, especially in non-European areas, please make sure you are selecting high quality items, not cheap schlock. It might be a good idea to have someone who knows something about the culture write the article and choose the items. Please no more grandma and grandpa, fat vs thin, Bonnie and Clyde type of articles. NO stereotyping. It might be a good idea to have a course in cultural sensitivity, hire some people that are over 50 and of different races, and realize that life in Brooklyn does not reflect the rest of the world. Remember: It's not about ETSY. You are a platform...not a seller, not a brand. Your mission is to help us to sell, not to extol some hipster image that has nothing to do with what most of us are about and what buyers are looking for. Your customers are the sellers. Without us you wouldn't exist. Like most sellers, I'm happy to be here because, for the most part, your platform works for me. But if you go the way of eBay and forget who your customers are...well, I'd be very sad about that. Now...some other little things. A way to renew one item instead of three. A way to delete expired listings. A way to edit from the item page. A way to find old convos easily. A way to keep favorites even if they are sold. A team dedicated to flagged items. A way to block bidders and spammers. Thanks Libby at Picklevalentine and Annagreen

Maria, Pesmou, Etsy Admins - Thanks for this opportunity. Glad you're still reading..... I echo many comments already made, especially the well articulated points made by OhSheSew, fotografia47 & as ElsiesAttic said: "I have one request... New Tagline. Etsy, Your Place for All Things Handmade..... {{add two words}} ..................and MORE! I WANT this site to stay focused on handmade, it's why I joined. :)" Etsy seems to have been scrambling to add so many bells & whistles that the entire site is not monitored for listing violations, whether by resellers of items NOT handmade by them as required in Etsy Seller policy or blatantly not vintage goods (less than 20 yrs. old). Flagged items are not removed. This sends the wrong message to other sellers, particularly new sellers migrating from the eBay flea market. Of timely concern, and I'm still really scratching my head over this one, is this week's Storque Quit Your Day Job feature (I am not calling out, but sincerely making an important point here). The featured shop sells merchandise which the seller states is made by two hired people, which makes them employees, and makes the goods NOT HANDMADE BY THE SELLER, as required and explicitly stated in Etsy's Seller policy, Seller FAQs and Seller DO's & DONT's sections. These employees are not part of a collective, as outlined by Etsy, nor is their manufacture of goods sold identified in the shop. Etsy says this too should be disclosed by sellers. Etsy, you really dropped the ball with this one. Why would you feature a seller in clear violation of the Handmade policy, the initial mission & backbone of Etsy? It undermines the fundamental premise & trademarked declaration: 'ETSY Your Place to Buy & Sell All Things Handmadeâ„¢". Etsy, please explain. Perhaps I am missing something in the Etsy DOs & DONTs for Handmade: "What can be sold This section outlines the items that can be listed for sale on Etsy. Handmade by you * All items must be handmade by the individual(s) running the Etsy shop." While I am selling down my existing stock handmade goods due to new laws whose requirements make it cost prohibitive to continue, I joined Etsy because I support Handmade, small production, DIY enterprises. Not resellers. Etsy must stick to its core mission or quickly slide down that slippery slope into mediocrity. Also, PLEASE integrate Google Checkout online payment service into the order form/buyer checkout. When I joined Etsy, before the huge capital investment & intgration of Paypal, I was repeatedly assured that Etsy was NOT going to use Paypal as their default payment choice as to keep with the DIY, small scale entrepreneurial mission. This has been a huge mistake. Paypal is owned by eBay (totally monopolistic) and they won't allow any competition in the payment arena. They also charge sellers too much. Google Checkout works wonderfully, protects buyers/sellers and costs less to sellers. Why not add it to Etsy now? Get back to basics, Etsy! And thank you, Etsy has been good to me. I sincerely appreciate it. It's hard to quit this branch of my handmade.....

Always a typo. Above should have read 'These employees are not part of a collective, as outlined by Etsy, nor are their manufacture of goods sold identified in the shop. Last point: For those concerned about getting the Etsy's Front Page - just keeping working hard to improve your designs, photostyling & photography. We all get our 15 seconds of fame. It does not necessarily translate into sales. Decide what you want: Fame or Fortune (a few minutes of front page attention or real money sales). They don't always go together. Once in a while they do.

Whew, read this whole thread and I agree with much of what I've seen here. I realize that this started as a Q & A that quickly turned into A List of Lists of Demands. However, in lue of that turn in objective here is my Wish List. Would love to see vintage and supplies get credit where credit is due. We're here and a massive part of Etsy. We'd like to come out of the attic now please. Ability to reorganize items on the front page of my shop. Imagine the wow factor of a spectacular treasury on every store front. Integrated checkout. The current system leaves sellers quite vulnerable to fraud and foul play. I have personally experienced this several times and seen buyers with feedback of 50% still continuing their habit of buying and not paying or waiting upwards of 10 days to pay. Bulk photo uploading to help streamline listing. More categories in my shop. I'm starting to feel like a contortionist when it comes to the cap on 10. Especially in a shop of our nature, some things just don't fit into my established categories. This is one place I'd rather not have to get creative. A more reliable and effective flagging system. I don't think I've ever seen anything that I have flagged removed. This is a huge problem for A LOT of honest sellers that are having to compete with resellers and folks plying new items as vintage. More front page, Storque and GG diversity. There's no reason for the same shop to be in all three places at the same time. There are so many amazing shops on Etsy that never see the light of day. Automatically submit items to Google Base. This only serves to help everyone, Etsy, sellers and customers alike. Manually entering this info into Google Base is tedious, time consuming and takes a little savvy to understand. Also, I would love to get stats on analytics for my shop specifically. The referring sites shown are often dead ends, which leads me to believe that they're simply there because that is how the customer found Etsy...not my shop. This info is completely irrelevant to my business. I have used analytics on other similar to Etsy websites and have not experienced this. So I know it's possible. Thanks a lot of the open platform here. Although in the future, the forums are a great place for finding out what's on all of minds. Cheers! &hearts

First, I want to say thanks to Maria, and all with Etsy.com, for all the work they do to keep Etsy up and running. I've only been here for a few months, but it has been a wonderful experience. I haven't yet read all the comments, so please forgive me if I am being repetitive. The issue I would like to see discussed is one which has been alluded to, subtly and blatantly, since I have been here: what appears to be a favoritism toward select sellers when Etsy chooses products to promote he site, whether it is on-site or through various outside venues. One very recent example: A seller(who once received "Featured Seller" spotlight) was in Gift Guides in the same wee. Also in that same week, the seller was highlighted in a Storque article. And, in the very same week, the seller and their item was shown on a national television show. Perhaps merely an astounding coincidence, it's unfortunate that this is not the first instance of such a thing. My questions would be: * Is/are Etsy management/administrators aware that some sellers perceive this sense of favoritism(whether intentional or not)? * If yes, does Etsy management have any intention of addressing the issue: to work to reduce or eliminate such weighted exposure? To make a statement as to why this weighted exposure occurs and why it will continue? * If no, does Etsy management feel this is an issue that deserves consideration in being addressed? Thanks you!

I would like to see a systematic way to get every sellers shop listed on the front page and in the treasury for more than a few seconds after listing, once in a while. There are so many great, undiscovered things for sale on Etsy. Not every artist/crafter has the ability or computer knowledge, or proper equipment and time to do everything that is required to sell successfully. I don't want to whine, but it is hard to create, design, make, list, promote, blog, study how to's etc. That is why we come to Etsy to reach an audience that we can't reach on our own.

I heart shops when I like something I know I'll need down the road, because they are my friend, just because I admire them, and many other reasons. It would be nice to be able to sort them into categories of why I've hearted them. But most of all, to seperate them by the the type of shop to make it easier when I go back looking to buy something. I would also love to be able to search etsy by shop type! For example, when I'm looking to purchase soap, rather than searching soap products I'd love to be able to search soap and have all the shops that sell soap come up. Not the products, but the shops! Maybe something like the "shop local" feature. Thanks for listening to us and trying to make etsy an even more wonderful place!

Several issues keep bothering me. 1. Blatant copyright infringement. If a seller has legitimate permission to use an image of a famous person, company design etc, they should be required to state this info. Very few would be able to do so and should not be able to list these things. 2. Resellers. Especially the ones that sell paintings, clothing and jewelry starting Friday night. (and why in a million dollar biz like etsy is there no one around on a weekend?). 3. Mistagging 50 word titles, blank or wrong materials tags. 4. Flagging. If a flag is inappropriate, I would like an explaination why so I might be able to see your viewpoint and stop wasting my time. Generally I like Etsy and don't sweat the little things. I feel the things I mention above are ones that cheapen the site and frustrate or discourage customers.

These are some of the feedback that I have; 1) I think Etsy should grant awards to Etsy Blog writters. E.g. having the Top 10 blogs from Etsians, encouraging blog writers in Etsy; or even have a blog directory. 2) For some of the important messages from Etsy, sometimes it my be to mass convo all Etsians rather than leaving them on forums. As I think not all Etsians checkout on the forums. 3) Rebate scheme - If someone shops with an Etsy shop, they will receive points. Once they have accrued a certain number of points they can exchange for Etsy vouchers to shop from Etsians 4) Etsy admin may offer a review service for fellow Etsians on their shop. As I have not been featured on a gift guide / in the front page / in the weekly promotion mails even I reply to the thread in the forum, I am not sure what I am not doing right for Etsy Admin for not picking me. It may be good that Etsy Admin offers a review service to give pointers to fellow Etsians to improve on. Thank you once again for listening. I think Etsy is a great platform to promote handmade goodies. Also I agree to a lot of the wonderful comments that other people have said e.g. Currency convertor, batch photo upload, rearranging shop without relisting.

AND the issue with search/tagging (just reduce number of tags, perhaps?) An easier time managing shops will have minimal impact unless customers can find them without wading through resellers and mis-tagged items. Also- let us know priorities. Sure, this will not please everyone. But when I see all the above great suggestions and then an admit starts a thread about Twittering and there are 'craft tutorials' .... what is the direction? what is the long-range goal? Etsy has the chance to be something really special but if you don't get more traffic to the sellers who are actually making quality items many of us will just give up. I have been a professional artist/craftsperson for 30 years. Until recently, due to several factors, I did more than 30 juried craft fairs per year and made a good living at it. I am unable to travel now and had hoped to get my shop going on Etsy but alas there is so little traffic to go around so nothing is happening. It seems we are supposed to bring our own clientele with us? I can buy that up to a point but shouldn't Etsy be getting traffic here as well? I am close to giving up on the whole thing. I don't have time to spend on twitter, facebook, or blogging everyday and I don't think most of the folks who are using those venues are buying customers anyway. First, let me say that I think Etsy is fabulous, and the positives far, far outweigh the negatives! However good can always be better and for me I think Etsy would be better if: - We could organize the listings in our shops. Just because I want to renew something, doesn't mean I want it at the top of my shop listings. - The checkout system was more clear and a buyer would be unable to finish a transaction until payment was complete. If Etsy sends me a notice that I have sold something, then by-golly I expect that the buyer has paid. Too many times I have had to contact a buyer, (generally a newbie) to tell them they mistakenly didn't finish the transaction, and have had to walk them through the steps of how to do so. No fun, always awkward and drains my time. - Sellers with more then one shop could jump from one to another without having to log in and log out and log back in again. Another time waster. - Changes and new features were clearly explained. That would be so appreciated! Thanks for listening! It boggles my mind how difficult it must be to smoothly run an operation the size of Etsy, and you all do a wonderful job. I know that everything I have said has been said before, but that just reinforces how much these changes would be welcomed!
