I just love seeing what folks are collecting. I guess I feel it tells us just a little bit about what inspires them, what they love, and what they choose to surround themselves with in their homes. Today, I’m delighted to present the first in an ongoing series here on The Storque: The Collectors. First presented on my own little blog, the rikrak studio, it’s 11 and a half quick questions with a wonderful artist on what they’re collecting (apart from their art supplies!). Hope you’ll just love these vintage super 8 cameras with the wonderful Chakra Pennywhistle!
‘Tis the season to record all of the wonderful things going on around us! This month the Etsy Handmade Moment video contest deadline is fast approaching (August 31). So here’s a collection interview to inspire us!

Who (are you?): Rikkianne (Chakra Pennywhistle)
What (are you collecting?): Vintage Super 8 Cameras
When (did you start?): About 8 or 9 years ago.
How (many do you have?): 23
Where (do you find them?): Local thrifts and antique stores.
Where (do you keep them?): They are placed on a book shelf in my living room.
What(‘s an interesting story behind one?): Lots of them still have film in them! Someday we plan to get a projector and check them out.
What (piece would you like to add?): I want to find one in an odd color.
Why (do you love them?): It is actually a collection that my husband and I share. He loves them just as much as I do.
What (else do you collect?): Vintage Vera Neumann scarves. I have over 300 of them!
Which (camera is your favourite?): This one was my Grandfather’s. My Grandfather loved films. He loved recording and fiddling with all things film related. That camera was one of his treasures.

Oh I just adore this gorgeous collection, Rikkianne! Thanks so much for sharing it with us. I also adore Chakra Pennywhistle‘s beautiful handmade creations and her eco-forward style. Her integration of gorgeous, vintage textiles, and newer organic materials helps make her beautiful accessories, for your home, your children, or your self, simply divine, not to mention, wonderfully eco-conscious! She’s been an inspiration to me for as long as I’ve known her (we first met through the wonderful EcoEtsy Team!). I’m inspired by how she incorporates sustainable design and business practices into her beautiful work, blog and life. Plus… she’s a wonderful, generous, kind soul! How splendid!
Hope you’ll find something she’s made that you might like to add to your own collection of wonderful goodies:

Cool collection. I love how they have the cameras displayed in their house. My collection would never be that neat and organized! The only thing I have ever been able to consistently collect is stamps from the Caribbean. I like ones that feature flowers or colorful aquatic creatures. One day I'll do something artistic with my collection and display them nicely.

We have several vintage cameras in our home. They are family treasures. I totally remember my very first Polaroid; can't remember what happened to it, but I remember how fun it was using it with friends.

Those Super 8s are displayed beautifully. How lucky they are to have built in book shelves! Aside from collecting antique textiles and the vintage fabrics that are used in my art quilts and Etsy shops work, I have a real, longtime love affair with early 19th century English ceramics, c. 1820-1850s, especially Romantic Staffordshire transferware and collected well before it became fashionable. It's not just a middle-age mom kind of antique, either. Timeless beauty, good design & quality endure. Just about every room in house has some: plate groupings on walls, mantle, shelves. The scenic vignettes provide an instant vacation & draw the mind into mythical places with stories to tell.

Great to see this collection....I have a Super 8 camera that I bought in San Francisco in '97 at a photo store's garage sale for $50. Not only did I shoot with it, but I had the film transferred to video, edited myself w/graphics and music, and then aired it on TechTV when I worked there as Design Director. Most of the footage was my Super 8 shoot of Alcatraz, combined with Hi-8 footage that I shot around the city and directly off my TV playing the 1958 jazz film, 'Jazz on a Summer's Afternoon'. It's still one of my favorite pieces on my demo reel!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this collection. I'm an avid camera collector. Old, new, used, broken, whatever. Just love having them around. I also own a super 8 camera and reminds me of my college days when I would have to trek into NYC from NJ to get my film developed at Rafik, which seemed to be the only place around the developed Super 8 at the time.

Nice collection and display, very clean. I collect too much: sheet music, music albums from the 60's, clothes, quilt tops, kitchen utensils, tins, stones, sewing material and accessories, chairs, maps, etc. I could go on all day. My new vintage shop picketfencevintage.etsy.com will help me to disperse some of these things, I hope. I do have a very old camera I acquired lately from my family, but don't know exactly what kind it is (it's put up). I even have a storage rental that I use.

My sister has been into photography since she was a teen, She has created portraits of nature such as a splendid lightning strike zig zagging across a stormy sky behind a beached wooden boat and I followed her artistic behaviour sketching the boat and placing this art on my business cards. Cameras are very much a rich, intrinsic part of American and other where histories
