A Cozy New Year’s Eve Party With Simple Lovely

bio_SimpleLovely.jpgSince 2007, Joslyn Taylor’s blog, Simple Lovely, has chronicled her love for design, fashion, art, the raising of two creative and interesting little girls and the pursuit of an artful, inspired life. Her other blog, Raising Foodies, concerns the joys and foibles of instilling in those same little girls a passion for food at its best. She is also an editor at Kirtsy, and a freelance writer with frequent articles in local publications such as the Dallas edition of Edible Magazine, Dallas Child Magazine, and Thrive Magazine, as well as The Dallas Morning News’ glossy fashion monthly, FDluxe.

A few years ago, my husband and I decided to forgo the mayhem of going out on December 31st, and instead we began hosting small parties to welcome the New Year. We typically invite one or two other families with kiddos to share a simple meal, play games and (hopefully) have impromptu dance parties while we wait for the clock to strike midnight (if the kids can make it that long). Even though we keep things casual, I like to send a lovely invitation to make the evening feel special. I also try to wear something a bit festive, but comfortable. I’m pretty smitten with this vintage navy silk dress paired with a glitzy necklace.

This year I’m going for a cozy vibe that combines natural elements with a bit of sparkle. Pretty paper crane mobiles, metallic garland and sculptural paper urchins strung from the ceiling impart an instant party feel. I’d load the table with candles, woody serving pieces, white ceramics, gold and silver accessories and some air plants to inject a little greenery into the scene.

We’ll keep food simple with homemade pizza topped with Fontina cheese and artichoke hearts (pepperoni for the kiddos), loads of champagne, and marshmallows dipped in chocolate fondue — perfect to sustain us while we play silly vintage party games and gear up for the dancing.
