Our community shares the best small business tips with each other every single day in the Etsy Forums. I always reference this particularly helpful Etsy Forum post in my Online Labs workshops for sellers. (Find out more about these workshops here.) When I recently met MeganAuman in person and she mentioned that this Forum post inspired her to completely make over her item descriptions (which led to an increase in sales), I knew I needed to do a blog post about it.
20 Questions Your Buyers Are Asking by sparklerama
Etsy is full of amazing and beautiful things. It would be a shame if your beautiful work didn’t sell because your description of the item left your customers scratching their heads.
This is a list to jump start your thinking when you write your next item description. Remember that your customer cannot see the item in person. Don’t assume that the qualities of your item are obvious to your customer or that your photos say it all. (I have seen more than one item that I couldn’t even figure out what the item WAS!). You might even consider describing your item as if you had no pictures for your customer to look at. Really make them feel like they are right there with your item.
This is not an all inclusive list and some questions may not be appropriate for all items or sellers. This list is just to get you thinking about some of the things your customer might want to know about your fabulous work.
- What is it? It may be totally obvious to you what the item is, but it might not be obvious to your customer.
- What color is it? The color on your computer monitor may not be the same as mine.
- How big is it? As a buyer I don’t want to guess if that painting will fit over my fireplace or if those earrings are going to hang past my shoulders.
- What is it made from? What materials and techniques are used?
- How do I care for it? Can I wash and dry that wool sweater?
- Who should buy it? or Who should NOT buy it? Is it appropriate for pregnant women? Children? Pets?
- What is it used for? Is it decorative? Does it have a function? Both?
- What does it feel like? Is that scarf soft to the touch? What’s the texture like? Is that necklace very heavy?
- How does it work? Does it slip over my head? Is there a clasp? Do I tie it around my waist?
- Why is this one better than the one in the next shop? What special skills, materials, or ideas do you use that make your item the best?
- Do I get everything in the picture? I see 12 items in your picture, do I get them all? Only one? Does that lovely bauble in the background come with it or is it just for display?
- Will it fit me? When I shop in a brick and mortar shop I might try on 12 things and find only 1 that fits well. I am taking a BIG chance on buying clothes online. Please make it easier for me by offering extensive measurement and sizing information. Don’t assume that your customer will know what you mean by “small” or “large.”
- What if it doesn’t fit? Am I stuck with it? Will you exchange it? Who pays to ship it back?
- Is it ready to use? Is that painting ready to hang? Do I need to frame it first?
- How does it arrive? Is it gift wrapped? Is it ready to ship or is it made to order?
- Will I get the EXACT item in the photo? Is it a stock photo or do I get the exact item?
- Is it gonna stink? Does that vintage item have a funky, musty odor? Does the seller smoke while he creates that item?
- How do I know it’s “vintage”? What kind of research did you do to determine how old that item is? Is it marked? Is there a date on it? Are you experienced with vintage and antique items?
- What do those fancy terms mean? Don’t take for granted that your customer knows what a cabochon is or what giclee or gocco means.
- Can I live without this item? Chances are your customer can easily live without your items. It’s your job to SELL it to them. Let them know why owning this item is so wonderful. Are they going to feel like a princess with that lovely bracelet? Is that platter not only functional, but makes a wonderful work of art? Is that item the perfect gift for hard-to-buy-for people? Does the item evoke certain emotions? Tell us what’s so great about it!

marking this article. It's important to mention that we have to put all that info in an appealing an accessible way, right now I have 3-4 little paragraphs in every description, I dunno if my customers actually read it complete, I've seen other sellers what put the info with bullets, numbers, funny questions, etc. that looks great and its fun to read! I need to work in my descriptions.

Thank you for a great article! I'm always surprised how many sellers don't list basic info like size. Doesn't have to be clothing to want to know the size of the item! I try to answer any question that might come up (or that I would have myself) which makes for long descriptions. But I would rather know than not!

natalya1905 says:
Thank you very much for this list of question. Very helpful, very thoughtful. I always include shipping information in my item descriptions: how many days making of the item will take, what mailing service I'll use, etc. It seems, many people tend not to read shipping policies, so I want to be as clear as possible. Another thing. Many of the items in my shop can be worn in sets (hat/scarf, beanie/mittens, etc). I try to give the photos of both items together, as well as the links to the matching items in my descriptions (and I received many combined orders due to it).

This is a great list of questions... thank you for sharing it here! I'll have to review them when listing in my other shop too (rightasraincreations). Although I think an add-on is needed to question #10. (Why is this one better than the one in the next shop?) Be sure not to actually bad mouth or even mention other shops in your descriptions. This is petty and unprofessional, in my opinion. State why your product is superior to others out there without actually naming anyone. And yes, sadly I've seen this done.

As a newcomer to etsy, ALL advice is good advice!! As we list each item, it seems i am redundant as each piece is basically from the same components. Do customers tend to read a few of your listings to get a 'feel' for your work ?

So happy you shared these tips. Every time I post an item I'm always wondering what types of questions will come out of the description... Did I miss anything? Is the story clear and does it really make me want to buy it? Fantastic suggestions and I'll be sure to keep asking those questions of myself to make sure I've put enough information into my shop.

WingsDove says:
What an excellent topic to write about. I run across missing information all the time when I am looking for something to buy on Etsy. Although the words, "one size fits all" might seem like enough to the seller, I really do need to know the length and width when I am looking for a cowl to buy as a gift for my 5'11" niece or my 5'0" best friend - to get an idea of how it might look and fit. Reading that an item is made of "yarn" is also perplexing, since "yarn" could mean wool, wool-blend, acrylic, etc. - important information for my skin sensitivities. Bath and body products, again, should also contain every ingredient for those of us with skin sensitivities. I don't take the time to contact the seller I just go on to the next shop and look for listings that include all sizes and material content. Most buyers will probably do the same - just move on.

It's funny, when I am a buyer I love to have heaps of info; someone mentioned they have 3 paragraphs and wonder if that is too much, but I love reading all that is there, after all, I only go into listings that I am keen on buying, that's why I look! Occasionally you come across screeds and screeds and I don't bother reading it all, but only occasionally. So I too will be printing off that list and referring to it as I do my descriptions, as I sucumb to the "hope this isn't too much information" demon when I do my listings too... Just have to remind myself to think like I am buying!
