This week we’re taking Craft Night across the river! Etsy and South Steet Seaport are teaming up to host a series of free Craft Nights at the @Seaport space, with materials generously sponsored by Hancock Fabrics. We’re holding our second event of the series Wednesday, August 18 with a nautical-themed embroidery workshop, taught by Jessica Marquez from MiniatureRhino, with two 1.5 hour sessions (one at 6 p.m, another at 7:30 p.m.). As a special gift from our friends at Hancock Fabrics, all the materials for the project, as well as goodie bags, will be provided for free on a first-come, first-served basis for each session. Stop by for a chance to learn a new skill, connect with fellow crafters, and explore the South Street Seaport.
Live far away? Fear not! You can still learn exactly how to make this embroidery project with detailed directions from Jessica herself. Here is a list of materials needed (all are available on hancockfabrics.com):
- Needle
- Thread (suggested colors DMC 321, 822, 3852, 823, 413, 938)
- 5” embroidery hoop
- Stabilizer (suggestions: Pellon Stitch-N-Tear and/or Sulky Tear-Easy tear-away stabilizer)
- Transfer method for pattern to fabric (water soluble or iron transfer pen, or trace on to Sulky)
- Scissors
Just download the PDF instructions and embroidery patterns to get started, and this special coupon from Hancock Fabrics.
The Craft Night low down:
When: Wednesday, August 18, 2010. Demos will be held at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., for two 1.5 hour sessions. Please stop by for one session. We realized embroidery can be a time-consuming activity and that you might not finish your project in 90 minutes, so we encourage all participants to take their projects home after their session to finish up. (Post photos of your finished pieces in the Etsy Labs Show & Tell Flickr group!)

Where: The @Seaport space at 210 Front Street, New York, NY 10038 in South Street Seaport
How: Here are directions.
Who: Your crafty self!
RSVP: Please do so here, if you’re on Meetup.
Note: There will be no Monday Craft Night at the Etsy Labs in DUMBO this week, as this special Craft Night is happening instead. Join us at South Street Seaport… Don’t worry, it is only one subway stop away!
Upcoming Events at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn:
8/23: One Million Pillowcase Craft Night (Not in Brooklyn? Start your own!)
8/30: Open Craft Night at the Etsy Labs
9/06: Craft Night is Cancelled for Labor Day

These are so cute! Embroidery DOES last forever -- I do a lot of bead embroidery, and it takes an hour or to in order to finish each piece. It's worth it though; I love the way any type of embroidery looks!

Oh, I wish I could go to that! Live near Toronto - can't quite justify the trip, oh well. This reminds me how I've been wanting to take up embroidery for years!

Teaching a craft to people is so wonderful. I think so many of us have voids in our lives and learning a hobby can lift people up. To the people at ETSY, you are awesome!!
