Come to a Crafty Tea Party at Etsy Labs

Tumble down the rabbit hole and grab a paint brush, for this week we’re painting tea cups and sipping fine tea for Craft Night at the Etsy Labs! Join us for this tea-themed evening — whether you’re in Brooklyn, or anywhere in the world.

Stop by for our weekly Craft Night in our online classroom, the Virtual Labs, for live online demos. Aya Rosen from LoucheLab will host an online workshop highlighting her ceramic painting techniques at 5 p.m. ET in the Virtual Labs. At 6 p.m. ET, Andy from Adagio will share tips on tea preparation and a bit on the history of tea. (Click here to see what time 5 p.m. ET is in your hometown.)

As ever, you can join Craft Night in person at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn anytime between 4-8 p.m. at 55 Washington Street, Suite 512 in Brooklyn, New York. Craft Night is a time to make things, sharpen your craft skills and connect with fellow crafters… and drink tea!

On Monday, March 8, Aya Rosen will share her techniques for freestyle dishware decoration that centers around taking a generic-looking dish and making it personal, special, creative and fun by using doodling, drawing, painting, stickers and hand-cut stencils to make something special and unique. These tips are also spelled out step-by-step in this week’s How-Tuesday post.

Aya says, “One of my favorite things about working in this manner is that there’s no right and wrong. It’s all about playing around with shapes, colors and my own personal style, and making something that captures my mood at a specific moment.” Our pals from Adagio will also be sharing a sampling of green teas for us to try and an encyclopedic knowledge of tea history and brewing techniques.

If you are attending Craft Night at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn, please bring a box or other container for carrying home your work post crafting. We will provide all the supplies for free, including a cup and saucer, though you are welcome to bring along extra dishes to decorate. White or light colored ceramic pieces are recommended, as the color will pop more. Thrift stores are a great place to find old dishware ready for revamping. Also, feel free to bring tea time snacks to share!

About the this week’s teacher, Aya Rosen: My background is in advertising — that was my “adult” work phase — but after moving to New York I got an amazing chance to not have to go back to that and to use my skills for good instead of evil. In the past three and a half years I’ve been making art and crafts, which I sell in my Etsy shop, LoucheLabs, and recently, getting more into photography. I love to just make art all the time, whether it’s a painting, a teapot or a photo. One of my favorite things is changing mediums, but keeping the same themes, color scales and aesthetics.

I live in Brooklyn, NY, with my husband Ned, who’s the most amazing photographer, and our two motorcycles, Jesse and Olga. When I’m not making art, I’m usually asleep, sitting in a local coffee shop or wasting time reading strange science blogs online. You can learn more about me on my website, Etsy Featured Seller interview, and Handmade Portrait video.

If you are attending Craft Night virtually this week and would like to craft along with us, you’ll need to gather the following supplies:

  • A piece of china to paint. It may be any white china, ceramic or porcelain.
  • 1 fine tip Pebeo Porcelaine 150 marker. I used 08 Anthracite Black.
  • A few colors of Pebeo Porcelaine 150 paint. I used 43 Ivory, 18 Sapphire Blue, 20 Turquoise, and just a tiny bit of 05 Coral Red, 01 Citrine Yellow, 10 Tourmaline Red.
  • A paint brush or two, a pallet to mix paint on (I use a plate) and a few cotton swabs to fix mistakes
  • Rubbing alcohol or glass cleaner
  • A standard kitchen oven to bake the piece and set the colors

3/22: Finger Puppets with Kata Golda
3/29: Open Craft Night
