Community Council Summary: January 2010

The first meeting of the second seller Community Council is in the books, and it has been and is a learning experience for all of us. More than anything else, this first month and meeting has been devoted to orientation and assessment. Members of the Council have had a chance to introduce themselves to one another, but were very quick to jump into the task of getting feedback about Etsy from the community. They consolidated the thoughts you provided into a small series of broad topics that were referenced most often on a discussion thread created for this purpose in the Etsy Forums. I’ll go into those in a little more detail in just a bit.

Vanessa, editor-in-chief of Etsy’s blog, gave the Council an early look at her recently published article on spamming to make sure that the tone was lively but not too harsh. Council members enjoyed the article as it was written and thus didn’t have any major recommendations for it. Additionally, we all talked a little about basic spam standards and the even more recently published blog reader survey.

Before delving into the bulk of what we discussed, I have to acknowledge that it’s a challenging time to be on the Community Council. Much is changing under the direction of Rob Kalin as Etsy sets about gathering the resources to work on projects that are priorities to the community and also to Etsy staff. Rob covered many of these in his recent Q&A Forum announcements. As more work is done we’ll be able to discuss individual projects in greater detail. Consequently, we didn’t really talk specifics at this first meeting; I hope we’ll be able to discuss those more over time and bring them to you as well.

So what did we cover? The first broad topic was seller tools. Among the most referenced topics on the Forum thread were batch editing tools and currency conversion tools. The Council recognized that there were many, many other tools beyond these two that would be helpful to sellers. Etsy recognizes this too, as Forum moderators in particular keep track of features and tools that the community asks for. Though we at Etsy have made efforts to provide individual tools in the past, now we are creating a seller tools team focused just on building tools like the ones referenced above.

Policy enforcement was also a topic that was very strongly represented. Though everyone on the Council wants to see Etsy do a better job in cleaning up persistent or blatant policy violators, some said that this should simply go without saying; it shouldn’t have to be a topic of discussion. Frankly, we at Etsy agree. It’s a matter that we’re not happy about, and along with multiple new positions to assist the Support team we’re also assembling a specific, multidisciplinary team for this task: the SCRAM (Systems for Catching Resellers and Abusers of the Marketplace) Team. The solutions to this problem require both more people and better tools, and we will get both.

The third strongly represented topic was Checkout, and this too encompassed a few different phenomena. There was a general consensus that the Checkout interface should be easier for first-time Etsy buyers to understand. Additionally, we discussed our want to avoid problems with non-paying buyers by not removing an item from a seller’s shop until the buyer pays for it. Some Council members expressed concern in a system like this over artists who make one-of-a-kind pieces that multiple buyers may attempt to purchase at once. I’ll make sure that we’re looking out for our artists making OOAK pieces as this particular project goes forward.

There are many other topics that we wanted to cover but couldn’t due to time constraints (search, privacy controls, etc.). The Council will continue to take input from the community for topics of discussion over the coming months, though the way that we collect those thoughts from you may change in order to make that process both easier on you and on the Council. I’ll be back with another summary next month, and in the meantime the Council and myself will continue to advocate for you, the Etsy community!

Very happy that both seller tools and policy enforcement were discussed in the meeting. Violations of Etsy as a market place for handmade and vintage (+supplies) is a subject that needs urgent addressing - there are a lot of unhappy and frustrated 'honest' sellers out there... We all know that it's a massive task to root out all the resellers and other abusers of Etsy TOU's so it's great to know that more admin folks will be tackling this problem. Good luck to SCRAM!

Thank you for the update. I can't wait for the changes. I love ETSY! I hope the SCRAM team is working on information to sellers who are selling illegal items like those with a licensed image, such as Elmo, or any other Disney character. You can't sell items with an image that is protected under copyright law and is a IP liability to Etsy. Etsy needs to stop creating liabilities for themselves!! Etsy should have a better legal team working on this issue! (no, I'm not a lawyer, just a knowledgeable business person wanting Etsy to do better as a business, their success means my success)

It's wrong and people like that should be held accountable! I also completely agree with myfeltstore...right up above me - Licensed character selling is a HUGE liability! Etsy is allowing it to happen and so it falls on your shoulders too not just the shop owner! I have a very specific message in my shop about that. I just won't do it. Thanks for the update! I look forward to hearing more! -kg

I have occasionally wondered how someone can make, photograph, track payments and ship 4000+ pieces of jewelry, for example, in a 2-3 yr window. Maybe some shops are group efforts . . . maybe resellers.

Well that's a good start. Thank you all for your efforts, I'm sure that Etsy will be a better place for us all. I would like to add, or probably re-add-I want full control & use of my expired listings, I don't understand why we have full access to our inactive listings (except the ability to delete them (?)) but not our expired listings. I would like to make changes to the listing BEFORE relisting an item. Aren't these OUR listings? We should have full access to them. That said I would also like to have the ability to "delete" my inactive listings accordingly. Thank you! (:

~~for me the hardest thing on Etsy has been trying to buy a vintage photo by placing it in the shopping cart and then going back to the same store to buy another item and having that purchased item snagged out from under me. I have discussed this issue with many vintage photo sellers and they agree its difficult because if you don't hit the"commit to purchase" button then it can be bought by another buyer. this happened only yesterday and while still shopping w same seller I lost that item which was in my basket. If there is a way around this one I would love to know. This way if you are buying multiples from same seller, which I often do, then there is one shipping price. They way it is now you have to get a shipping refund from the seller. The only way is to ask the seller to hold for you as a reserve(people ask this all the time of me) but by the time the seller gets your convo..someone buys it out from under you. This should be resolved as I find myself spending so much time on this as do other sellers and it seems it should be a more efficient and safe checkout for those of us buying multiple items from same sellers. I want to press the purchase button but have it safe for me to go back and shop more and then at my time checkout with one ship price. This is the only place that this issue exists. I am sure you have folks working on it already. Otherwise Etsy is a breeze for shopping and listing. Love you guys for all you do for us!!XO

I'm happy this came up, but I'd just like to stress it again: Please make the check-out process easier for buyers. Especially new buyers. I have to contact at least 3 buyers per week to ask them to finish the payment process. It's never maliciousness on their part...just confusion.

I for one really appreciate all the hard work you guys (and gals) put in to make Etsy even more fabulous than it already is! Especially as I rarely have the time to visit the forums and have my say. But please can you enable us to upload more than one photo at a time when we're listing? We're always hearing about the importance of photos in our listings and being encouraged to use all five photo slots, but uploading them one at a time takes so long. SCRAM... yes, it should go without saying, but at the same time, the point needs to be got across to those who will insist on trying to abuse the system. Good manners and responsible behaviour aren't inborn, they have to be learned.... and if they won't be learned voluntarily then sadly they have to be enforced. It would be lovely not to need "Etsy police", but we can't allow the vision and ethos of this site to be hijacked by the unscrupulous. Something this valuable to us all has to be protected.

First of all, I think it's fabulous that Rob is back at the helm. I like the idea of him being back in control of his "vision" for Etsy. As to the Check-Out issue and non-paying buyers keeping items unavailable to other buyers, I had a thought; as soon as someone puts an item in their cart, would it be possible for the software to automatically put a colored border on the item and label it as "In Escrow", making it impossible to add to someone else's shopping cart but making it still viewable, "favorite-able" and with an option to "notify me if this item becomes available"? This would also address maclancy's (long post, several above) concerns as well. The issue being raised are great and I'm thrilled to see Etsy allowing us the opportunity to be part of it's evolution. Thanks!
