UPDATE UPDATE: Etsy and the Etsy Admin combined raised $13,270!
UPDATE: Etsy Admin decided to donate our personal money, and Etsy (the company) will be matching what we Admin raise. Our donations will be going to Partners in Health.
Our blogger friend Jen over at IndieFixx told us about a fundraiser she is putting together where artists have already donated work. Here are the details:
Haiti Relief Fundriaser: I am coordinating a silent auction, which just started today, with 100% of the proceeds to go to the Red Cross International Response Fund. Lots of Etsy shops have lined up to donate items and I’d like to raise as much money as possible. Here’s a list of the Estians who have pledged an item for the auction.

As I am sure many of you have seen, there was an enormous (7.0 magnitude) earthquake in Haiti last evening that has destroyed much of Port-au-Prince and the surrounding area, home to some 1.8 million people. Reports are still coming in but there is no doubt that the Haitians, most of whom live on less than $1000/year according to many UN and relief agency reports, will need all the help they can get for days, weeks, months and years to come.
Our hearts, prayers and best wishes go out to the people of Haiti and to their friends and family around the world. The Huffington Post has a good list of organizations assisting in the rescue efforts and I am sure there are many others as well. Many Etsians will no doubt want to help artists directly as well — with phone lines down and already limited infrastructure in ruins it may take some time to reach or get responses from people or agencies. Let’s all be patient and do our best to help.

I appreciate you bringing this human-need story into the Etsy community even though most of us already know it happened. Etsy is truly a community in the broadest sense of the word. It just has that spirit. Your post has motivated me to donate some of my sales in the near future to the Red Cross or something. Generosity breeds generosity...

thanks for blogging about this, so important to think outside of our own little shops and the day to day.. I've been on twitpic this AM and have been stunned by the pics from some photojournalists over there. A reminder of the Tsunami in a way... This collection of work above is a peaceful contrast to the reports and images. I love the earrings and especially the portrait of the little child.

I have thought about what to do when these things happen. I live far away, I can't go there and help, I give to certain charities. But I have decided for me it is important to give each time. I have so much and others so little and we are a closer world now than we used to be. I may not send much but I want to respond as a member of the same planet. For me, to skip one lunch out is nothing and might be what keeps a Haitian holding onto hope.

Thank you for the link to Huffington Post. Disaster relief is often a mine field for those of us who want to send our money to non-religious organizations, and that was an excellent list for us. We are already big fans of Yele Haiti, the organization run by Wyclef Jean. Haiti has been a tragedy on America's doorstep (and largely because of American actions) for far too long. I can only hope a disaster of this magnitude ends up focusing useful attention on our neighbor and solving some problems that have desperately needed solving for decades. And for those for whom it has come too late, we can only make an offering for your journey.

Save the Children, headquartered in CT, has helped the people of Haiti over the past many decades. They may have on-the-ground ops already mobilized. Consider donating to them too. I worked for them years ago when Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward volunteered for print ads. Wonderful organization that primarily focuses on community development (a hand-up rather than hand-out) but they definitely respond to emergencies too. When 20/20 featured a story about Save the Children in Nepal America responded in such a beautiful wave of donations and care. I appreciate non-denominational ngo's who aren't concerned about spending money on shipping Bibles, etc. Clean water and food are what make a huge, immediate difference. Most peoples have their own culture and spiritual path and I honor and support that. May care arrive agenda less.

I'm organizing a fundraiser - donating some of my work towards a raffle. I just have to figure out the logistics of it. I've done them before - paid for the shipping & item, and then people buy the tickets on my clockworkzero blog. I will also be donating a portion of the sales here in my esty store sold in January towards a charity. Its such a heart breaking event. Our Governer General here in Canada is from there and my heart broke listening to her speak yesterday.

I agree w/ oliverhenry... Let's give, give, give. I donated $5 via my cell phone by texting the word "YELE" to 501501--Wyclef Jean's nonprofit organization. No amount is too small! The Huffington Post list is very good - thanks for sharing! It's going to be a long road for recovery for the poor people of Haiti, and we can continue to give, knowing that the great need and the work will be ongoing. As a reminder... *** Dealing with Electronic Communications Post-Disaster *** In the past, tragedies and natural disasters have prompted individuals with criminal intent to exploit such events for personal gain. The recent earthquake in Haiti is no exception. Already scammers and spammers have begun to use to the tragedy to trick people into giving money or opening up computer systems to viruses and other malicious software. In light of this, everyone should remain aware of the need to be cautious when dealing with electronic communications. These are some guidelines that can be adhered to: · Do not respond to any unsolicited (spam) incoming e-mails, including clicking links contained within those messages. · Be skeptical of individuals representing themselves as surviving victims or officials asking for donations via e-mail or social networking sites. · Verify the legitimacy of nonprofit organizations by utilizing various Internet-based resources that may assist in confirming the groups existence and its nonprofit status rather than following a purported link to the site. · Be cautious of e-mails that claim to show pictures of the disaster areas in attached files because the files may contain viruses. Only open attachments from known senders. · Do not give your personal or financial information to anyone who solicits contributions, as providing such information may compromise your identity and make you vulnerable to identity theft.

Easiest thing in the world to do - pick up cell phone, Blackberry, whatever, text "yele" to 501501 and you will automatically donate $5.00 (it will be charged to your cell phone bill.) In this horribly impoverished country, even before the earthquake, people were reduced to eating dirt to try to get some nutrition from it. Show of hands... When is the last time you had to do that?.... yeah, me neither. ANYONE who has a cell phone can afford $5.00. Please just do this one simple thing if nothing else.

One thing I would like to note is to please not spread any word of new ways to help until you have verified it. Since this happened, I have seen the rumor that UPS would send care packages free (not true, they have no way to deliver them), and the more harmful rumor that American Airlines was sending doctors and nurses there for free. This latter rumor was especially troublesome because the phone number given was for the Haitian consulate here in NYC, which is already extremely busy trying to help the families here find their loved ones back in Haiti. Everyone wants to do something to help, I know. Just please take a moment to fact-check first.

Please proceed with caution on Partners in Health. The Better Business Bureau has this to say about them: "Despite written BBB Wise Giving Alliance requests in the past year, this organization either has not responded to Alliance requests for information or has declined to be evaluated in relation to the Alliance’s Standards for Charity Accountability. While participation in the Alliance’s charity review efforts is voluntary, the Alliance believes that failure to participate may demonstrate a lack of commitment to transparency. Without the requested information, the Alliance cannot determine if this charity adheres to the Standards for Charity Accountability. A charity's willing disclosure of information beyond that typically included in its financial statements and government filings is, in the Alliance's view, an expression of openness that strengthens public trust in the charitable sector. The BBB Wise Giving Alliance reports on national charities and determines if they meet 20 voluntary standards on matters such as charity finances, appeals, and governance. The Alliance does not evaluate the worthiness of the charitable program."

I'm doing a fundraiser to help my friend Dee who is working in Haiti right now. On Friday they rescued a guy who had been buried for 10 days. He is a live and recovering. I am offering art prints that were done in Haiti 4 years ago by my boyfriend. 100% of your donation goes to Dee for her expenses to go to Haiti as all of it came out of her pocket. Check out the art prints and fridge magnets here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/thehouseofhearts?section_id=6735669

I love seeing people, especially a community that you're apart of, pull together for something greater. 50% of all sales in my store are going to Haiti. I was just there in November and my heart breaks for the people there.

So many people, groups, organizations, etc., are helping victims of the Haiti earthquake. More and more around the world, tragedies strike, and America is always there to help. Now, international assistance has come from within our etsy.com website, and we're proud of it. Thank you to all. I will research to find out how I can play a small part in this endeavor. You're all great!

We have already donated to the Red Cross. Another very worthwhile group is http://www.samaritanspurse.org/ Our church had a shoe drive, that just finished last Sunday. It was the goal of sending 500 pairs of shoes! Haven't heard the final outcome, but know it was close. We pray for all who have lost loved ones, the workers, and every aspect of the effort! May God hold them in His hand, and comfort each and every one! Jeanie
