New Year’s entertaining is right around the corner, and last season’s punch just isn’t going to cut it. Stylish vintage barware complements an old school cocktail like nothing else, so we’re thrilled to have Thad Voegler, owner and master bartender of Bar Agricole in San Francisco, share a few good recipes for our upcoming celebrations.
Thad’s bar and restaurant is setting a new standard — showcasing impeccably made and sourced cocktails. He uses local citrus, fruits and herbs as well as spirits made by non-industrial distillers. He considers each step in creating a cocktail and as a result his drinks taste balanced and fresh, the best I’ve ever had. It’s just a little too easy to have one too many.

Without further ado: vintage stemware to inspire your upcoming New Year’s fête and give Thad’s cocktails a whirl (or shake, as the case may be). You won’t be disappointed.

Milk Punch
1.5 oz brandy
.5 oz Jamaican rum
.75 oz milk
1 whole egg
1 teaspoon raw sugar
Shake for ten seconds without ice to emulsify. Add ice and shake hard for 30 seconds. Fine strain into a chilled coupe glass or small wine glass. Garnish with fresh grated nutmeg.
Winter Brandy Cocktail
1.5 oz armagnac or domestic brandy
.75 Carpano Antica Vermouth
.25 oz Gran Clasico bitters
3 dashes orange bitters
2 dashes aromatic bitters
Stir well with a large piece of orange zest. Strain into a small, chilled cocktail glass. Happy New Year and cheers!

Fun foodie post for New Year's Eve! Great recipes and gorgeous glassware. Vintage cocktail paraphernalia is especially appealing -- perhaps because as children we associated mixed drinks (for better or worse) with grown-ups' sophistication and celebration? And thank you for using my vintage cookbook illustration.

Cocktail lover here who is very happy to see this post! That Winter Brandy sounds especially good since I've become a big bitters fiend. I second what KettleConfections posted, too--bitters make a lovely non-sugary "soda" when a few drops are mixed in with seltzer or soda water.

Wow, very cool. Here's something that you also might want to try, Lavender Infused Sangria Yield 1½ quarts 1 large orange, sliced 1 lime, sliced 1 lemon, sliced Lavender Syrup (see recipe below) ¼ cup good quality brandy 1 bottle (750 ml) red wine 1 bottle (12 oz) club soda Lavender Syrup 1 cup water 1 cup sugar 2 tablespoons dried culinary lavender buds Make the Lavender Syrup: In a small saucepan, bring water and sugar to a boil and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat and add lavender buds. Cover and allow syrup to stand for 1 hour. Strain into a glass container, cover, and keep refrigerated for up to a few weeks. In a large glass pitcher, combine the fruit slices. Add brandy, Lavender Syrup and wine. Stir to blend well. Refrigerate until well chilled, about 2 hours. When ready to serve, fill wine glasses with ice and fill glasses one-half to two-thirds full of the sangria mixture. Top with desired amount of club soda. Add fruit slices to glasses.
