Hello all, we are Deborah and Heather of OpheliasApothecary. We officially opened the apothecary in January of 2009 but have been lurking around Etsy and creating our potions since 2007. We really wanted to be set on branding, photography, and shop vision before we started online!
How long have you both been crafting?
We met fourteen years ago, while working together as managers of different departments within a music theatre in Branson, Missouri. What started out as a coworkers turned into the love of our lives and our relationship has withstood the roller coaster of life since then! Creativity has always been in our lives: Heather started drawing young, while Deborah was blending perfumes with her Barbie Perfume Maker and, subsequently, selling perfumes, at the ripe old age of 6! Once together, we have stumbled across a business that we can both be passionate about, so much so, that it doesn’t even feel like work! Luckily, while we each bring different strengths to our apothecary, we seem to still be on the same page with its vision. We imagine our little shop nestled in an eastern coastal town, with whitewashed walls, a lingering aroma of drying herbs, our bottles lining the walls, and a little brass bell welcoming you inside.
How did you hear about Etsy?
Deborah first heard of Etsy while receiving treatment for stage IV breast cancer in 2006. A friend she made during her biweekly treatment sessions would sit and knit the entire time and talk about her store here on Etsy. When we decided to start online, Etsy just seemed like the right fit for us. We have a passion for vintage and love supporting the handmade movement, so it just felt like the place to be.
How has Etsy played into your relationship?
We didn’t intend for the apothecary to be full time for both of us so soon, but when Heather was laid off due to budget cutbacks at her corporate job three weeks before Christmas, we took it as the not so gentle nudge we needed to take the plunge. We now eat, breathe, and dream Etsy! It’s definitely a 24/7 job and when we try to “take the day off” we seem to still do things that revolve around creating and building our shop. We find inspiration for fragrance and perfume blends around every corner, so we can be anywhere and a whiff of a flower or spice will encourage us to sit down and take note of perfume blends. Our favorite thing to do on a day off is to go to thrift stores, flea markets, and estate sales to search out unique and hard-to-find treasures that complement our shop!
What is the best part about working together?
Since the breast cancer diagnosis, we have realized there is a lot more to life than working 80-hour work weeks for someone else. We also are very thankful that our schedule allows for Heather to attend chemo and doctor appointments — something that was hard to arrange in a structured corporate environment. We enjoy having our time together now, and knowing at the end of the day that we are doing it for ourselves. A recent fortune cookie from a long night in the studio and Chinese take-out read, “Creating a life of love and joy will heal you,” and we firmly believe that by making this our motto, we will conquer whatever life has in store for us.
Anything difficult about working as a team?
We have had our challenges since starting this full time together but we also find it very rewarding. We bounce ideas off one another and have found ways to make the little apothecary more efficient operationally, so that we can focus more on product development. Deborah is more artistically minded and Heather is more organizationally motivated. The perfect yin and yang for our studio!
What are you doing this Valentine’s Day?
Several years ago on Valentine’s Day, we had a commitment ceremony, so really Valentine’s Day is one of our many anniversaries. We plan on having a nice, quiet dinner out and maybe going to a movie. We haven’t had an official date night since before the holiday rush, so it would be nice to take the evening off!
Anything else you’d like to add?

Most amazing story. I purchased some of their custom perfumes as a birthday gift for my mom a few months ago and she absolutely loved the whole experience and now has her own beautiful scent that she wears daily. I should add that these ladies were spot on in creating scents that were very true to her presence and personality! I mean, not only are the fragrances quality but their packaging is amazing too. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants to give a luxurious personal gift or just treat themselves to something really amazing:)
