Etsy Statistics: December 2009 Weather Report

This holiday season there were quite a few Etsy presents under the tree.

The stats:

  • $25.6 million of goods were sold by our community in December; roughly 17% higher than November’s $22 million.
  • That represents 1,449,171 items sold for the month, 12% higher than November’s 1,297,964.
  • 1,815,177 new items were listed in the month, 6% lower than November’s 1,931,988.
  • 307,671 new members joined the Etsy community in the month, up 61,441, or 25% from November.
  • 671,752,056 page views were recorded on the site this month.
The $25.6 million of goods sold by the community represents a 98% increase from from 2008′s total. At the same time, items sold were up 78%, which means the average price per item sold was up. We translate that to mean that sellers are doing a better job of pricing their items, thus increasing their income.
Some of our members have been reaching out to me with specific requests for stats. Each Etsy shop is as unique in its data needs as it is in its product lines, so figuring out what stats to distribute is challenging — and that’s if we even have the information available. We are working on selecting a few metrics we think will be useful to the seller community, but we need your help. I will read the comments left on this post to see if a popular request sticks out. Hopefully, we can add the data to future Weather Reports.

Curious about how other months compare? Check out our past Weather Reports for more statistics.

Yay! Way to go Etsy! As for stats, can we get the mean price of items listed and sold in the month (as opposed to the average, which we can calculate)? Also, the average time an item was listed on Etsy before it sold? Is there any way to know how many buyers signed up the day they made their purchase? And lastly, number of multiple item sales, meaning the buyer purchased more than one item at a time from the same shop? Eileen...

Those are some awesome figures! Everywhere I go, I seem to hear Etsy being mentioned. A lot of my sales were to brand-spanking-new members, so I agree with those who think it would be nice to have a comparison between new & returning buyers. It's not a stat (everybody else has amazing ideas!), but I'd love to be able to see item views and hearts right on my 'Currently for Sale' page, so I can see what people are most interested in and promote accordingly. Category stats would be a great way to see what's getting the most attention site-wide, but something more seller-specific could be immediately useful.

Good work~ I had my best month yet in January....traditionally a slow retail time. Etsy's doing something right. Thanks for all of your continuing efforts to promote the site!

Hi - I know yours is an older post, but wanted to request anyway - is there anywhere we can view what price SOLD items went for? This would be extremely helpful in pricing items for my shop, if I knew how much certain things sold for in the past. For example, in viewing a seller's SOLD items, can you keep the price visible? Ebay does this and a user can see this information for the past 2 weeks of sales. Thanks! - teresa
