Here’s a little secret I learned a few years back, my first year selling my work on Etsy: not only were sales more bountiful in the winter months, but each package I sent usually connected me with two prospective fans, not just one. Since many sales on Etsy in the last quarter of the year are gifts, I aimed to turn the gift giver and the gift recipient into admirers of my Etsy shop. In order to thoughtfully offer the right give-able item, the first step is to contemplate your unique buyer.

Coffee with Woody by littlebranches
Let’s consider what type of person is visiting your Etsy shop during the winter months. Someone shopping for a gift on Etsy can be a stay-at-home mom, a teen buying gifts for friends, a boss looking for something for her team. Because there are so many different types of people buying gifts on Etsy, it’s up to you to try to answer the question, “What does the gift giver drawn to your shop look like?” Create a description of your ideal shopper. How old are they? What are their hobbies? Where do they spend their holidays? What do they wear to holiday parties? Who do they shop for?
![]()
When the weather gets cold and the year feels long, many of us turn to the company of others to keep warm. Most of us show up with a gift for the hostess, but remember, not all holiday shoppers are looking for gifts for others, they might be looking for that perfect outfit to wear to their holiday work party. (And yes, some of us are like me and hibernate with video games and pie and online shopping, and maybe this is your target market? Something to think about!)

Classic Long Luxury Cabled Scarf by KerreraSkye
Depending on where you are in the world (and where most of your buyers are located), the last few months of the year are perfect to stock up on woolly, warm accessories (or late spring accessories if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere). I asked our resident merchandising expert, marymary, what kind of accessories she thinks will be hot this winter. ”Heavier materials such as wools, leathers, and thick blends make up the fall palette leading into winter. Popular motifs this year consist of animal prints, faux fur, equestrian style, military components, tribal references, geometric shapes and patterns, heavy and delicate embellishment and ornamentation, along with structural tailored shapes. Among my favorite accessory trends we’ve spotted emerging this season are sheer and embellished stockings, larger than life cowls, animal shapes, a throwback to ’80s leg and arm warmers, structured fascinators, spats with a Victorian flare, long chain body jewelry, and shoulder epaulets.”

Ticking and Burlap Stocking with Chalkboard Ornament by myadobecottage
While I had Mary’s attention, I picked her brain about last year’s biggest trends for gifts on Etsy. ”Selling trends we noticed across all gift categories last season, which we expect to remain hot this year, include options for personalization, the incorporation of chalkboard or other writable surfaces, vintage references, shiny metallics and sparkles, and clever new takes on traditional classics. Last year some of the strongest popular trends surrounded woodland aesthetics and vampire themes. For an extended list of seasonal trends across the site, be sure to follow the monthly merchandising series.”
So my challenge to you, dear Etsy artist, collector and creator, can you ponder these types of buyers and hot trends and use this information to launch a new product line? Or perhaps add more of what you already create that will fly off your virtual shelves in the winter months?
![]()
“The overriding requirement of any product line, irrespective of size, is a sense of cohesiveness and a distinct brand identity, feel and style. This sense of unity can come from any number of places — a common use of fabric, be it felt, rubber or wood; a distinctive approach to pattern and color; beautiful packaging; a common functionality like kitchen utensils or kids’ toys; a commitment to eco-friendliness; an interesting naming solution; or a sense of playfulness and fun.”
— Design*Sponge’s Biz Ladies: Creating a Product Line
Feeling overwhelmed and have little time to develop a new product line? Neither does Etsy seller AlissaJacobs, and she has the perfect solution. “I would love to add lots of new items and holiday themed lovelies, but that just may not be a reality for me this year. Instead, I’m thinking of how to present items I currently sell into gift sets and offer lovely packaging.” Have a peek at some of her ideas on her blog, Quiltish.

iPod Case Dark Gray Wool Felt by byrdandbelle
If you do have the time, consider your target market, holiday trends and your unique point of view to create perfectly give-able line of work. Get started now with prototypes! Angie of byrdandbelle says, “Prior to introducing anything, I start making prototypes. I ‘practice’ any new techniques and refine the construction until I feel confident I can execute it well every time. More than that, it has to be a process that doesn’t make me shudder at the thought of actually having to do it a few hundred times. I remind myself that having a successful shop is as much about enjoying what I’m doing as it is about sales.”

Stacking Rings by monkeysalwayslook
Allison of monkeysalwayslook wants you to also think about your product line price points. “Creating items with a range of price points creates sale opportunities. Those lower price point items can be add-ons for a customer purchasing mid-priced items and the high priced items can be that special gift for a loved one. This is the best time to expand the items you offer so you hit the ground running.”
I’d love to hear what products worked for you last holiday season, and what you’re thinking about changing or adding this winter. Let me know in the comments below!

Thanks for the "It's time" reminder! Great things to think about with product line. For a lot of people, like me, it can be a challenge to figure out what people want, so I started with the most basic thing which was to have a range of prices in my shop. I have found that is a good start and it has worked for me. It seems that adults buy the higher priced items for adult friends and family and the lower price item tends to go to kids and nephews and nieces in the family. And since my shop has a central theme I have found people combining items to give a gift package. I am thinking of adding some very simple hand printed gift cards into my shop.

for my winter line i'm analyzing trends in jewelry that have seriously long lasting appeal - that turn up every few hundred years or so in a new way. so far i've got prototypes that fuse classical settings with unexpected stones and classical stones with unexpected settings. also higher quality materials are on the list - gold fill and solid gold replaces gold plate. most exciting is an expansion into authentic bronze age jewelry. if we keep turning back to these originals to find inspiration in our new designs why not just use the real thing? i would get married all over again just to be able to do it in a roman ring from 450 AD. ;)

Great article! Definitely adding this to my favourites to read from time to time. Last year was my first christmas sale. What sold well for me were my themed paper dolls in winter season and summer season (for australia). I also sold plenty of 2010 calendars which people gave as gifts. This year I've started listing my 2011 calendars earlier and have been selling them at the markets. I've also offered custom portraits in my style (a wonderful etsian suggested to me) and the response is awesome! I've been taking in orders for drawing happy families this holiday season! A lot of my customers have these portraits framed or sent to families / friends for presents. Even though I haven't expanded much on my product line..I think offering my customers something customised is also what makes etsy shopping / buying special.

Great article. This subject has been on my mind recently. I have focused on taking components of my elaborate designs and making simpler pieces of jewelry that still has my particular flare. I have also launched a new line of intricate wire woven monograms pendants to my store. These letterings are like nothing else seen on Etsy. I am crossing my fingers that they take off.

For those of us not selling gift items - my best selling items are hand made paper beads that people use in their own creative projects. At this time of year I sell a lot of beads to those making their own gifts or people doing more crafting because of the long, dark nights. I like to add a few seasonal designs to my bead collections too and that way people can choose if they want seasonal themed beads or everyday ones. Remember too that just after the festive season people are spending money that might have been a Christmas gift so it needn't be full stop for sales after the festivities :o)

Great article and advice about your target market. What surprised me the most about last Christmas was that people will by 10 or 12 same or similar items at a time as co-worker gifts or stocking stuffers. This year I plan to be more prepared with the number of flower rings and post earrings that I have on hand so I'm not scrambling to accomodate large orders.

Last year was my first year, so I don't know what worked for me at the holidays. (Though being featured on the front page during that busy time sure gave me a nice boost!) This year, I was thinking about my own change of outfits as the weather cools and wishing I had some longer jewelry to wear with these sweaters and turtlenecks. So I decided to plunge into a new line of necklaces on long chains (very different from the beaded necklaces up till now, though most of the chain necklaces will still feature a selection of natural beads.) I'm still in the stage of photographing them, but I'm really happy with the results (and I really like wearing them!) Lucky that long, chain necklaces just happens to be trending. (actually, I picked up on that this summer at a picnic when 6 of the 7 teenagers there all had long chain or cord necklaces with an interesting pendant of some sort) I pointed it out to them and they all looked at each other like nothing out of the ordinary was going on and I was some kind of kook for thinking that this fabulous coincidence was a new trend to stand up and take notice of. I guess they got my brain rolling :) I'm (almost) ready for the upcoming holiday season!

My best sellers last year were my woolen scarves: http://www.etsy.com/shop/nowonder?section_id=7020060 The fabric is really soft 100% wool. I since added the silk chiffon shawls that could also make a great gift: http://www.etsy.com/shop/nowonder?section_id=6539515 I think that they sold well as with scarves you don't need to guess the size (If you don't know the exact size of the person who receives it). I hope that my dresses will sell well as they are fun and very faltering and will be great for parties. Thank you Danielle

This is my second Christmas on Etsy and I am hyped and getting ready. I just ordered boxes for shipping and rethinking my packaging. I am about to order some new moo cards to attached to the package. Also, I have been trying to add new items to my shop as frequently as possible and stock up for a few local craft shows. I never thought of two audiences. Great suggestions. Thanks for all the info.

Two audiences is such a good tip. I had a guy buy a book this week, he asked for it to be sent to 'Aurora. I mailed back asking if he wanted a message or card enclosed. He said, 'say happy birthday, put some exclamation marks and say something about love!!' I wrote a short poem, wrapped it in rose print paper with a toning ribbon, and sent it on it's way. Hopefully, J and Aurora will be both be pleased with their gift.

I have just two new ideas and will stick to that so it is not overwhelming. I say make your best choices and go for it! It is a great idea to consider one's audience in terms of gifting though and I will have to think about that one! Thanks much :)

This boot camp is such a great idea! I haven't been this excited about Etsy since my first sale. I'm going to focus more on targeting northern nesters and I like the idea of adding sparkle.

Great article. I'm in the process of re-examining my prices to be more reflective of the handmade market. I think some of my prices are too low and may cause people looking for quality - which I have, to look elsewhere.
