So, you’ve installed your Etsy Web Analytics. Now what you do with all this data? I’m going to give you a few explanations and tips to help you use these stats to improve your Etsy shop. If you are new to Google Analytics (the free tool that powers Etsy Web Analytics), I suggest watching this ten minute YouTube video by Google, perhaps even twice. Don’t expect to be an analytics master right away. Get acquainted with this powerful tool gradually, and if you start to get flustered, walk away and come back later.
Let’s get started! Head on over to your Google Analytics account and open up the dashboard for your Etsy shop.

First I want to point out one of my favorite analytics functions, which allows you to compare two date ranges for your reports. This tool can help you analyze traffic from one week or month to the next, which is particularly useful if you’ve made a significant change and you want to compare stats! From Google Analytics Help:
To select a range of dates:
- From the Calendar tab, click once on the desired start date, then click the end date. The selected days will be highlighted.
- The Timeline tab lets you drag the start and end date sliders to any desired date.
- Your selection will be displayed in the Date Range text boxes to the right of the timeline.
- You can also enter a start and end date in the Date Range fields, using mm/dd/yyyy format.
To compare two different ranges:
- Select the Compare to Past checkbox and follow the instructions above to select a date range.
- Change values in your reports will be calculated against the selected Compare to Past range.
Remember: Once you’ve selected a new date range, click Apply Range to update your report.
Comparing date ranges can be quite useful. Let’s say last month you launched a new line of work. This trick can help you find out quickly if that effort has culminated in more visits or visitors (keep digging to find out how long those visitors hung out in your shop or where in the world they came from).
Now let’s chat about bounce rate — I’ve noticed that a lot of sellers are curious about this topic. Bounce rate is the percentage of visitors who don’t hang out and view another item or page within your Etsy shop. They come in, say, to a particular item listing and then leave without checking out anything else in your shop. (Oh, dear!)
You can find your average bounce rate on the dashboard of your Google Analytics account, but you can also check out the bounce rate on a specific page in your Etsy shop, on traffic sources, on your landing and exit pages and more, so dig around!
And now a few tips to decrease your bounce rate:
- Are the right people finding you? Often we focus on getting as many people as possible to find us, but what we really want are the right people finding us. (One who is truly interested in your work and will hang out in your shop for a while — decreasing your bounce rate.) Are your item titles and descriptions bringing in the right type of visitor? Make sure your titles and descriptions are accurate and specific. Check out the search keywords people are using to find you. Do they make sense, for the most part? If not, you may want to revise these terms.
- Can your visitors find what they need? Remember, many of your visitors are landing on an item listing page, so make sure you are giving them all the information that they need there. If your descriptions are sparse and you aren’t showing them a few angles of your work, they might just “bounce” off to another shop or search elsewhere.
- Keep your visitors surfin’ around your Etsy shop with links. You can link to a similar item in your shop, a shop section, your policies, profile or even back to your Etsy shop within your item description. How do you do this? Simply copy the URL of the page you want to link to and then paste while in edit mode (any links within Etsy will automagically be clickable!).
I know you are probably wondering what an average bounce rate is, right? I wouldn’t worry too much about an “average” — we all have different levels of activity on Etsy so there isn’t an exact science to this. My suggestion would be to aim to lower your current bounce rate and not worry too much about what others’ rates are. (However, to see the results of a poll of 21 sellers from the European Street Team, have a look at this Handmade Marketing blog post.)
A few more resources for stats:
- Have a peek at all your Etsy item views on CraftCult.
- Find out what search terms people are using to find your items with Tag Finder on Craftopolis.
Having problems seeing your report? Check out this forum thread.

Read this. Checked my stats. I had one visitor from google in September...yikes. I'm amazed at every one that has found me just within the Etsy searching searching tools alone. If I can figure out this Google thing I will be better off. Thank you again.

Read this, checked my stats and only had one visitor from Google, back in September. I'm amazed anyone found me at all just using the search tools on Etsy. If I can figure out this Google thing I will be much better off. Thank you again.

I'm so excited about google analytics! I am a newbie and yet I am already getting visits to my shop from all over the world...just the motivation I need to keep improving my shop and adding to it. I found a code you can enter into a website to add a cookie to your personal computers so data from your own computers doesn't show up in your analytics. I was wondering if this works for etsy sites? Anyone know?

Hey guys. I don't think this is covered yet, but the Google Analytics integration Etsy uses skews the traffic sources report. Etsy.com and MyShop.Etsy.com are seen as the same site, so all traffic that comes from these sources, to Etsy, and then to you will be listed as coming to your site when in fact they went to Etsy.com FIRST, and then found you. This is important to know! I did a blog post explaining this further: http://studioeleven11.wordpress.com/2011/02/24/understanding-direct-traffic-to-your-etsy-shop-in-google-analytics/

I have tried in vain to set this up! I am able to set up a analytics account but cannot figure out how to get my source code pasted into my etsy pages. I have found the html page for my shop but it won't allow me to paste anything in there. Any suggestions? I am ready to throw my laptop through the wall ! lol!

Just a tip: You'll definitely want to filter out your own visits! It's simple to do. From your Google Analytics Dashboard, go to Admin>Filters and click + New Filter. The Create New radio button will be clicked, good. Give it a name, I like to name it the IP address I'm filtering, because when my lease expires and I'm issued a new IP, I like to be able to tell at a glance whether my filter is still valid (and create a new one if not). Click the radio button Predefined Filter, then Exclude>traffic rom the IP Addresses>that are equal to: Enter your IP address in the boxes, numbers only. Up to three numbers per box. To find your IP address, try typing "MY IP" in a Google search box. It will tell you. IP addresses change every few weeks to months, so you'll need to update this filter fairly regularly. Click Save, and stop getting inflated views of how many people are looking at your shop! You might ask your admins, coworkers, or best friends who look at your shop frequently what their IP addresses are, and add them too. Or IP addresses of your work computers, etc. etc.
