Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hi, my name is Lauren Hunt and I have no Aunt June. Long ago, I planned on making up long and ridiculous stories about the fictional, chain-smoking aunt who taught me to sew but the stories never materialized. I’m not much of a writer but that’s fine, I prefer drawing anyway. I live in Kansas City, Missouri, where my husband Brian and I just bought a 110-year-old house that we share with our cat Baxter and our schnauzer-mutt Rufus.
I graduated from college four years ago with an art degree and have no idea what to do with it. I was a mall photographer for a while (eek), then worked for a commercial food photographer for a year (yum), followed by a stint as a teaching assistant at a private school (no words), and am now a part-time secretary with a lot of time to devote to my crafty enterprises (yay!). I love thrifting and going to estate sales, especially now that we have a house to fill with furniture — I’m always looking for that mythical $5 Eames chair.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I work three days a week doing secretarial work for a therapist and occasionally do some photo archiving for my former employer. In our spare time, my husband and I love to do dinner and board games with friends and go garage sale-ing on the weekends. We also love road trips — the kitschier the better. Our honeymoon was an Abe Lincoln themed journey, but we also managed to go to the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk.
What first made you want to become an artist?
My mother is a teacher so I grew up around a LOT of books and I was always really drawn to the books with colorful and intricate illustrations. I especially loved books illustrated by Diane Dillon, Don Freeman, Steven Gammell or Patricia Polacco. My parents always really encouraged me to draw and paint and got me involved in art classes and camps. I doubt I was a very good student in those classes — I have never been great at following instructions, but they opened my eyes to new techniques and inspirations.
Please describe your creative process.
All of my fabric starts in my sketchbook, and the way I sketch is by drawing the same thing over and over again. I just get fixated on objects and will doodle variations on a theme forever. I scan them in and use Photoshop to design my repeat, upload to Spoonflower and MAGIC! Fabric!
For other items, like the Overdue Book Calendar, the process is more involved; I spend a lot of time carefully picking color palettes for each month and a LOT of time drawing books! My bags are made very simply, so when I sit down to sew, it’s really just a relaxing, meditative activity. My husband is going to laugh when he reads that because he hears what I’m yelling when my thread tangles/breaks/needs tension adjustment, etc., and none of it sounds “meditative.” But I love it! My love of sewing is what led me to designing fabric and I am so happy when I am doing those things!
What handmade possession do you most cherish?
When I was in high school, I played violin in a band so my father made me an electric violin. My dad doesn’t have any formal training making instruments; he just decided what he wanted to make and then figured out how to make it. I think I get that creative confidence from him because I usually assume that if something can be made, I can figure out how to make it. Charlie Daniels also has one of my dad’s violins, so Charlie Daniels and I are fiddle-buddies, which is pretty awesome.
Name your top five books, movies, musicians, and websites besides Etsy.

What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?
Try to make a product that is completely you, something that no one else can make. Being original and being yourself are the most important tools you have when creating art or anything else. Also, get involved with your local Etsy Team! They can help you and it’s great to have someone to talk to who understands what you’re doing.
What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see?
I love the daily Etsy Finds emails. I usually end up finding several new favorites through those. My typical way of browsing is looking through the favorites of sellers whose work I love — if I admire what someone makes, I usually enjoy what they like, too. As far as features, I would love to see some sort of option that would allow you to list a similar item to one you have listed, pre-populating the fields and allowing for editing. I would also love to have a “coupon code” feature!
How do you promote your work?
I have been a blogger for longer than I have been an Etsian so I promote myself on my blog, though I try not to do it very much. The focus of my blog is not my shop and I think that’s important. If it were the focus, then my blog would just be a commercial. What has really helped me in promoting my work is joining my local Etsy Team. I have learned more from the KCEtsy Team in a few months than I had in YEARS trying to figure things out on my own! One of my fellow KCEtsyians, Tara of Polkadot Papoose, asked me what I was doing to promote my work. When I said, “Nothing,” she laughed and said, “Well THAT’S why you’re not selling anything! Your stuff is cute, but no one knows it’s there!” Since then, I’ve learned a lot about search engine optimization and the power of keywording and all sorts of other dorky things.
In ten years, where would you like to be?
In ten years, I would love to have produced a complete line of quilting fabric. Really, I would love to produce ten lines so I better start drawing. I would love to be able to support myself just doing the creative stuff that I love. It would be great if I could be taller but I don’t think that’s going to happen. I would like to travel more and I would especially like to go to Turkey. But I want to live in the same house with the same man and the same dog and the same cat so I am lucky that both of my pets are immortal. (They are, shut up.)

Hi Lauren, I just about laughed out loud when I read your comments on wanting to write about your (fictional) aunt June who chain smokes and taught you to sew. Well, that is my mother in real life! Maybe someday you will actually write those stories.... Your prints are so nice! Love your calendar!

it's a funny world... you know? I grew up across the river from you in Atchison, KS, and I had an Aunt June whom the family affectionately called JunieBug... she inspired in me a life long love of collecting jewelry (I have her cameos) and that in turn led me to making it... hmmm.... lol. anyway, congrats and best to you...

Your not much as a writer???????? I totally disagree. Your comments are funny and honest. If you wrote a book on your imaginary aunt, I would definitely read it. And possibly forget to write down when its due to be returned to the library on the due date calendar, and in doing so help fund poor libraries. :-) Lovely article, right there with you on hoping that one day I can be self sufficient and live solely on my artistic talents.
