Tell us a bit about yourself.
In the first grade there was a day where all the students in my class came dressed up as what we wanted to be when we grew up. I wore an apron — I wanted to be a mother. So I am living my dream as the mother of 4 children, ages 7, 5, 3 and 1. I am the joyful wife of Andy, an almost Ph.D. in mathematics. We live in the Evergreen Historic District of Mesa, Arizona, which means lots of trees, lots of yard work, and great neighbors.
I believe in the power of words. My middle name, Hoku, is Hawaiian for “star” or “bright light” and always made me feel special; it also challenged me to brighten the lives of others. So now I have an Etsy shop that focuses on words and the good feelings they evoke.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
“I create a home where my family and I can see the ordinary miracles of God’s hand in our lives.” I wrote that as my personal mission statement and job description four years ago and tacked it up all over my house. My family is my life’s work and the joy of my heart. My 7-year-old plays the piano and my 5-year old plays piano and violin, so I practice daily with them. I love to bake and cook, and though I am a failed gardener, I like to plant fruit trees and have impromptu picnics in the backyard as we eat whatever is in season. We visit a lot of children’s museums and take a lot of walks and bike rides.
I am also the volunteer choir director in my kids’ Montessori school. Within four classes, I teach 29 students — two of which are my own. I arrange music for composers and sometimes write a song of my own. With four young kids, my biggest challenge is to live and create moments deliberately but spontaneously.
What first made you want to become an artist?
I loved making crafts with my mom when I was little. She was always making our house a home with her love. I had dreams then of becoming an artist, but music stole my heart away and I took that route for my school electives and my formal education. But I always created home décor and scrapbooks — it is just so satisfying to work with my hands and have something beautiful as a result.
Please describe your creative process.
My studio consists of my 1954 green kitchen table and a giant armoire I picked up at a yard sale and refinished. Once I put on my blue “Andy” apron, I am in my studio where each banner begins and ends at my kitchen table. Cutting, punching, stamping, distressing, stringing and finally shipping all happen there. I do most of my work while my children are at school, napping or in bed for the night, since paint, wet paintbrushes, ink-pads and my 1-year-old is a challenging mix. I find a great speech to listen to online that will renew my spirit and I go to work. Making banners in batches helps them look similar to each other and cuts down on prep and cleaning time. A lot of distressing and stringing takes place while I watch a favorite PBS show with my kids, or while I am supervising piano or violin practicing.

What handmade possession do you most cherish?
It’s not technically mine, but if hours spent using an item counts for anything, then my parent’s 100-year-old upright grand piano is my most cherished object. I’m sure it’s not completely handmade, but any good instrument takes the loving hands of a master craftsman. It belonged to my grandmother before it belonged to my parents — and it was old then. The keys are chipped, there are bleach stains from the time my sweet little sister dusted the piano with toilet cleaner, the B-flat is consistently out of tune, but I still hope that someday that big, dear friend of mine will be in my home.
What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?
Don’t be afraid to change your concept. When I first had the idea to make banners, I didn’t have anything in mind that resembles what I do now. It wasn’t until my then 5-year-old son was working alongside me, and I let him stamp on some chipboard with what I thought was an “ugly” stamp, that I had the inspiration to cut squares and stamp them with big letters. Inspiration comes in many forms, including the eager hands of a 5-year-old boy.
What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see?
I like the Treasury; I’ve never created one, but people include my items in them frequently, and then I go check it out. This draws me out of my own little world and has helped me find some items I really love and have purchased.
I’d like a listing with multiple quantities to act as if it had been renewed each time an item sold and jump back to the top of the search results. I like my items to stay near the beginning of the search results, so there isn’t much incentive to list multiple quantities of an item, since even when one sells, the listing will stay buried.
How do you promote your work?
I haven’t done any real promoting; I am so grateful for all the generous artists who create treasuries and include my work. I am also grateful for the Etsy Finds, because when I have been included my shop received a huge boost in sales and views. I also just created a Facebook page for announcements and special offers, Bekah Jennings on Etsy.
In ten years, where would you like to be?
My house will be full of teenagers in 10 years, and I hope my children will be an active part of my shop: cutting and punching board, shipping, photographing and creating listings, designing new banners. Working together unites a family for a lifetime, and working with my hands side-by-side with my children makes great opportunities for conversations. I plan to enjoy plenty of those moments.

Beautiful article.. Congratulations Bekah!!! Your work is amazing! I got a little emotional reading it, and looking at your pictures with your children. I often (more like everyday...)have my one year old daughter, under the table in my studio, looking for beads; And my four year old telling me "Mommy these earrings are so beauuuutiful...are these for another lady?". So right now working is a struggle. But I can't help myself to dream that maybe one day, we will be working together, and laughing about when I use to tell my four year old that "organizing beads is the most important part of the job!" (that's as far as I let my daughter get into it for right now!). So happy you are a featured seller, you are inspiring! Best wishes!!:)
