Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Jason Russell. I am 37 years old and currently living in Portland, Oregon, which is a fabulous city to be a potter, or a maker of anything for that matter! Before that, I lived in Denver, Chicago, and Berkeley. I spent a brief period of time in Japan, and I really want to go to Iceland.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I work part time at the Museum of Contemporary Craft. Pastimes include enjoying all the great beer here in Portland, hanging out with my perfect canine companion, Dutch, and riding my bicycle.
What first made you want to become an artist?
Well, I don’t think of myself as an artist. The debate over the difference between art and craft is a complex one, but I won’t go into that here on Etsy. I make things with my hands that are meant to be used by other people’s hands. I spent my first two years at the University of the Pacific undeclared. It was great. I took all kinds of different classes: Latin, puppetry, philosophy of religion, classical mythology, geological evolution of the earth. Then I wandered into the art department by chance and saw someone throwing on the wheel. I declared art as my major the next day. Fifteen years later, I’m still working with clay and I’m still intrigued with making simple usable objects.
Please describe your creative process.
I do ninety percent of my work on the potter’s wheel. I have recently switched to a white stoneware (cone 6 for you clay people) after using a red clay body for many years. I fire everything in an electric kiln, and I make my own glazes. I try to keep everything as minimal as possible. My forms are simple, as well as my glazing. I rarely employ any designs on my work, and if I do, it’s usually a single stripe. I like to let the glaze create patterns and textures. Very laissez-faire!

What handmade possession do you most cherish?
That’s a toss-up, as I have a few contenders. I would have to say my badger hair shaving brush, my uncle’s tobacco pipe collection, and my single serving teapot from Tokoname, Japan are at the top of my list.
Name your top five books, movies, musicians, and websites besides Etsy.
Books:
La Technique by Jacques Pepin
Sleeves of Desire by ECM records
The Unknown Craftsman by Soetsu Yanagi
Higglety Pigglety Pop! by Maurice Sendak
The Audubon Field Guides
Musicians:
Ketil Bjornstad
Zakir Hussain
Sade (yes, Sade)
David Lindley
Daniel Lanois
Websites
RIV Bike
ECM Records
West Coast Shaving
Jensen Steam Engines
Netflix
What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?
Find someone who is really good at selling on Etsy and ask them how they do it. I’m still learning. Good pictures and refreshing every day helps.
What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see?
I like the Treasury feature. I also like the ability to deactivate items instead of deleting them. That way I can have a studio sale, and whatever doesn’t sell goes back on Etsy. As far as features I’d like to see, it would be great to have a way of calculating shipping on an order-by-order basis. Sometimes I end up losing my shirt when the shipping ends up being higher than my set rate.
How do you promote your work?
“Fresh hot pottery! Get your fresh hot pottery here!” I’m the worst at marketing. It’s the hardest part of what I do. I have a website, but other than that, it’s through the lovely people of Etsy.
In ten years, where would you like to be?
In a country that pays for health care.

Thanks for sharing your story and items. I remember a similar situation when I went to school. I majored in Secondary Ed. Geography then changed to History by the time I actually started the semester. Walking past the Art Building on campus and seeing a model in the window as drawing class was in session, I knew I wanted to be in there. Taking an Art Appreciation course (ha ha), I then minored in Art. The creative process of my life would not be silent. It called to me. Long story short, I ended up majoring in Art and finishing with a BFA in Ceramics. I later went back to school and studied for an Art Ed. Certificate. So now with a home studio to make work, I teach junior high art.

Jason, your pottery is just beautiful! I bought a kiln recently on a whim. I had ZERO experience with it unlike you, but I was so intrigued with glass art. Turned out to be the best thing I have done in a long time. While my shop hasn't taken off yet,I am still loving making my creations. I just wish I had more kilns!!! They just dont go fast enough do they??!!? Hahaha. Good luck Jason!

Very subtle and simple - I like the non-overdecorating idea and laissez-faire mentality towards the material (perhaps that's why I'm working with paper yarn - let it do what it wants and most of the time you get beautiful results). Thanks a lot for sharing the insight into your working process with us!

Love the simplicity and love the blue glaze. I too hesitate to embellish my ceramic pottery and even my figural sculpture (not listed on etsy). I find pottery much more challenging than my realistic sculpture and was very successful selling my figures through the doll market...where the debate will always be one between art and craft. No matter. If it sells, then they can call it what they want. Nice work!
