Tell us a bit about yourself.
I was born and raised on the northern coast of California. I migrated to the Seattle area ten years ago, where I now live in a little old home with my husband, our son and three dogs. My husband and I practice attachment parenting; therefore, I spend most of my time mothering our two-year-old son. He and I spend a lot of time in our garden, at the beach, local parks, playgroups, and other amazing places the Seattle area has to offer.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
Most of my time is spent with my son. I’m also a registered veterinary technician and volunteer with rescued farm animals. Occasionally, I work at spay and neuter clinics in low income areas. I’m passionate about veganism and animal welfare.
I enjoy gardening, growing our own food, sewing, knitting, spinning, cooking, running, ballet and yoga. I take a lot of pictures. A LOT of pictures. I shoot mostly film with vintage cameras. And I’m a regular at local thrift stores.
What first made you want to become an artist?
I’ve never considered myself an artist. Who I am was never a conscious decision; I’m just who I’ve always been. My creative side has really started to blossom since being with my husband. He offers me a sense of unconditional security to fully be myself that I haven’t always had. I’ve really come into my own skin since being with him.
As long as I can remember, I’ve had an interest in nature, botanicals, herbs, essential oils, home remedies and things that naturally smell good. This has led me to my little Etsy shop.
Please describe your creative process.
My creative process happens in spurts throughout my life and my days. I’m filled with so many ideas, but I lack the time to accomplish all that I’d like to. I try to write things down when ideas come. I scribble things on scraps of paper wherever I may be: in the car, the grocery store, the beach, etc.
When I have time, usually when my son is sleeping, I enjoy sitting still and creating. I use only natural materials and avoid synthetics in my home and my Etsy shop. Living a cruelty-free lifestyle is also a priority to me.
What handmade possession do you most cherish?
I’m pretty sentimental about my belongings. I cherish things made by my family and friends. My mom painted my wedding invitations, so the original is framed and hung in our bedroom, along with a photo my sister took of one of my uncle’s Japanese Maples. My husband made our TV stand in his high school woodshop class, and my favorite baking dish is one I inherited from my great-grandmother. My favorite hat is one I knitted using handspun yarn my dear friend Georgia of yarnpirate gave me for my birthday.
I also cherish antique items made by people I’ve never even met. There’s such a thrill to finding handmade items in thrift stores, rescuing them and giving them new appreciation.
Name your top five books, movies, musicians, and websites besides Etsy.
Books: It’s ever-evolving but at the moment: Living Simply With Children, The Inner World of Farm Animals, The Food Revolution, Pride and Prejudice, and Graceful Parenting.
Music: It’s very hard to limit to only five. Always at the top of my list is Van Morrison. Then The Beatles, Thievery Corporation, Bob Marley, Joni Mitchell, and any kind of rap music. Oh yes, I said it, rap music.
Movies: Earthlings, Chocolat, Dirty Dancing, The Beach, Stranger Than Fiction.
Websites: Flickr, Olivet, Atlanta Bartlett, Apartment Therapy, Pandora.
What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?
Most importantly, make your work aesthetically appealing.
What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see?
I love the search options, Forums and the Etsy Blog. There’s a whole world of help and ideas available on Etsy that I have yet to discover.
I wish the photo viewing of a product were more up-to-date. It’d be nice to click on a picture, see it larger, and then have the option to view additional photos larger in that same window. Currently, you have to go back and chose pictures individually to view them larger.
I also wish you could click on a link (a blog, for example) from someone’s profile page and it would take you right to the website. Currently, you have to open a new window on your computer, and cut and paste the address to view the link.
How do you promote your work?
I’m pretty shy, and marketing myself is uncomfortable, so I avoid it. I take the approach of letting the wind blow my shop where it’s supposed to be. I would really love for people who appreciate my craft to just find me somehow, and I’ve met some amazing souls this way.
But I do have a fantastic group of family and friends who spread the word. And I spend time journaling my life online (Facebook, Flickr, blog, Twitter), which has unintentionally led others to my shop.
In ten years, where would you like to be?
Pretty much right where I am. Perhaps with another little one, a slightly larger kitchen and some land where I can care for rescued sheep, goats and chickens. My husband and I dream of living more sustainably, building a greener home using repurposed materials, growing more of our own food and starting a small animal sanctuary. I think it’s absolutely possible.

Greetings from a fellow Seattleite (also a transplant - moved here in 1997). I can really relate to your creative process - a long list of ideas & very little time to actually implement them. If you're doing any local shows pre-holidays I'd love to stop by & smell all your beautiful goodies! They'd make perfect gifts for so many of my friends! I have not yet dared to purchase fragrance-oriented items on etsy.

I love your story and your products look awesome : ) The funny thing though is ( and this is not a critique) the only advice you tell new sellers to have their product aesthetically pleasing and that was the one thing that struck me as first impression how plain and undressed your products look. Which is fine by me~ You are one of my new favourites for sure, I love self-sufficiency and attachment parenting : )
