Tell us a bit about yourself.
안녕하세요!… or annyeonghaseyo!… or hello! We are Marrianne Handmade Watch Studio and we live in South Korea (because we are Korean). We consist of five very different people who all share a love for making watches. Our names are 현진, 지용, 유미, 해미, 수진, but you can call us Marrianne, Tokashi, Yum, Hae Mi and Chibi.
Marrianne really is the captain of this watch-making ship. After a successful stint in fashion painting (hand-painting designs on clothing), she decided to tackle a whole new field — making watches. After studying jewelry design and production in Japan, she returned to Korea and began crafting silver jewelry and selling it at the Dong-Dae Moon Market Place. Before long, she was contacted by a Japanese watchmaker by the name of Sinohara and he soon became her mentor.
She went back to Japan and studied again, this time under Sinohara, and really began to perfect her watch-making skills. Sinohara has really been integral to her progression as a professional watchmaker (like any good mentor should be!). He also supplies the Japanese-made teeny-tiny inner-workings for all of the watches produced in Marrianne’s studio. Since 2008, Marrianne has operated her own studio in Korea, joining with and teaching Tokashi, Yum, Hae Mi and Chibi along the way.
If the studio were a sitcom, the character rundown would be something like:
Marrianne is the driving force, the experienced one, the teacher.
Tokashi is the quiet, meticulous, and somewhat mysterious one. He’s always on time and never forgets a detail. Perhaps he should have been a spy.
Yum is the one with great technique, who can solve problems that the others cannot and is an “early adapter” to new technology.
Hae Mi is the mother of the studio. She is calm and quiet, but always doing something — cleaning, organizing, etc.
Chibi is the small, beautiful, and creative one.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
Marrianne: I enjoy reading manga, taking photos around the city and traveling to new places to take photos. I’ve recently become interested in the art of tattoos.
Tokashi: I like to play baseball and eat traditional Korean cuisine. Ever heard of sundae? It has nothing to do with ice cream or hot fudge. It is a sort of sausage, stuffed with pig intestines, cellophane noodles, barley, and pork blood… mmm, delicious.
Yum: I also enjoy photography in and out of the city, can speak Japanese well, and enjoy eating Korean barbecue (grilled right there on the table, baby!).
Hae Mi: I also like taking photos and I’m talented with Photoshop. I relish the art of cutting watermelon and tomatoes, as well as peeling and dividing oranges. And despite being tiny, I love to eat and normally take two servings.
Chibi: I enjoy being the little princess of the studio (even though everyone ignores my requests for the nickname change) and I’m a very light eater. This draws instant concern in Korea, which as you may have surmised is a country of big eaters.
What first made you want to become an artist?
Marrianne’s family is a smorgasbord of artists, thus she has always been surrounded by the creative process. Her father was a handmade shoemaker for 45 years and her mother is a talented Oriental painter. Various aunts and uncles are interior designers and tailors. Marrianne was an artist from childhood and won many prizes for her creations. And despite her mother’s refusal to let her attend an art university (for worry of having a starving artist daughter) and insistence that she major in economics, she managed to become a full-time artist. Sorry mom, it seems it was inevitable.
Please describe your creative process.
The team collaborates and discusses, but one person makes one watch from start to finish. A design is always created first — only in the most extraordinary creative tornado does anyone proceed without a design. And then the watch is built using Italian calf leather, Japanese SEIKO Quartz Movement, Korean imagination, and various metals (often brass).
In the beginning, the work was nonstop; there just wasn’t time to slow down. (Korea is a very fast-paced society, especially when it comes to working.) Now, there is more time to discuss ideas and designs and this really improves not only the atmosphere in the studio, but it also results in a better product. There is an ongoing effort to slow down even more and continue to improve the quality of the pieces.
What handmade possession do you most cherish?
For Marrianne, perhaps it is the first watch she successfully created. It goes by the name “Gradiator” and is important because it taught her the step-by-step process of handcrafting watches. This simple process involves planning, building, and reviewing a piece. This may sound basic and that is because it is!
Name your top five books, movies, musicians, and websites besides Etsy.
Books:
To tell the truth, I usually don’t enjoy books without pictures inside (manga!)… Ghost in a Shell by Oshi Mamoru is my favorite. However, I have also enjoyed the novels: The Da Vinci Code, Parade, and Coin Locker Babies.
Movies:
Blade Runner is the best movie. Also, Swallow Tail (Japanese film directed by Shunji Iwai), 1004 AI (Japanese film directed by Yoshitaka Amano), Ghost in the Shell (Japanese film directed by Mamoru Oshii), and Memories (a Japanese type of animation).
Music:
Maximilian Hecker, James Blunt, Mika, Damien Rice, and Audio Bullys.
Websites:
Lalique Museum
Truck Furniture
Piet Hein Eek
Charkha
Stuck in Customs
What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?
Marrianne’s abstract advice is for artists to stop looking at their work as a hobby or a project, but rather to see it as building the field of art. It may sounds like a lofty goal, but lofty goals are what artists are made of, right?
Her practical advice stems from the fact that she has really benefited from the serious study of her art, so she encourages others to take a class, find a mentor, try anything in pursuit of improving yourself and your art. As the saying goes, “Never stop burning that midnight oil!”
And lastly, don’t be afraid to experiment through trial and error. Many ideas take time and many attempts to perfect, so let the piece evolve until you are satisfied.
What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see?
Etsy has provided an incomparable place for the world to see the work of Marrianne Handmade Watch Studio. It is just nice that it exists and is so user-friendly (especially when your first language isn’t English).
Favorite feature? The search function is accurate and easy to navigate, convo-ing people is a simple and trouble-free way to communicate with customers, and overall, it is a flexible system that allows the seller to present and sell their product exactly how they would like to.
New features? Korean language option?!
How do you promote your work?
So far, promotion has consisted of word of mouth and getting our product “out there” as much as is humanly possible. This includes a bat signal modified to look like a watch and a submission to the KEO space time capsule. (Time capsule! Get it?)
Really though, we have tried getting our pieces as much exposure as possible (in both physical and online arenas). Most recently, we made a blog, kimchifellow.
This is a Korean Etsians guild blog. We live in different locations and we make different items, but we’re all from South Korea and each of us has a shop on Etsy. We love our handmade life in common.
Kimchi is not just a favorite food for Korean people. It’s our life itself. As a fermented food, it requires wait and effort. People give their hearts with kimchi to neighbors. That’s why we named our blog Kimchi Fellow. We can show you fantastic taste, hot and spicy style, our warm hearts… just like kimchi. Get into our story!
In ten years, where would you like to be?
Studying and creating. Studying: maybe overseas? And creating: maybe watches, maybe furniture, or maybe pioneering the art of furniture that tells time!

You guys look like the greatest fun. Love your watches, very unique, I WANT ONE. By the way, I love Kimchi and even know how to make it very well. A Korean friend taught me, while living at the same duty station when my husband was still in the army. She also made cabbage pancakes for me with a delicious sauce with green onions and sesame seeds, but I lost the recipe. Care to send it to me? Keep up the great work and wishing you lots of success. Greetings, Diana.

Hi this is very nice. Thank you. I will definitely visit your shop and even maybe buy something there. Just recently I was looking for a belt for my watch. That would be great if I can find it in your shop. I'd rather to buy something on Etsy to support the Community. I have only one question here: why nobody “Truly Estian†ever got to my shop and ever wanted to buy something? The people that were buying from my shop are all outsiders. I myself bought a lot of stuff on Etsy followed by wonderful articles about Great Etsy Community and about how Etsians help each other. The result: none of Etsians even convo me about even considering buying my creations. I have more than 160 items from original art to great handmade gifts and jewelry. I spend tons of money trying to promote my shop. It is hard to believe that my shop would not be noticeable by at least one Etsian (the one from Great Community). This is neither request nor invitation nor begging. This speech is just what I have noticed and I wanted to share it with you Guys. Please convo me if you have any questions or comments. Thank you for your attention, Irina
