Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Lynn Weiler and I live in Scullville, New Jersey with my husband, Denis, my three-year-old son, Elijah Hurricane, and our insane Boston terrier, Kona, a.k.a. Moo Shu. I heart summer, large cups of coffee, flip flops, even numbers, color (especially green), Hatteras, the ocean, autumn, bike rides, Jesus, anything vintage, Pyrex, Montauk, live music, driving with the windows down and skateboards.
Scuffed and broken skateboards have become my obsession. I love everything about them. This obsession started right before my son was born. I was on a mission to find a way to stay at home with my new baby and wanted something that would appeal to my creative side. Skateboarding had always been a big part of my life growing up, and with the arrival of my little one, recycling had taken on a whole new meaning to me.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
Currently, we are in the process of renovating my husband’s childhood home. Talk about recycling! I don’t think we really knew what we were getting ourselves into. So when I’m not creating, I am recreating our new home.
I also enjoy taking bike rides to the bay, spending hours at thrift stores (unfortunately, my son hates to shop), taking trips, going to skate parks with my husband and spending time with my family. Right now, I am so loving watching my son discover his own creativity. Whether it’s sidewalk chalk, play dough, crayons or finger paints, he is becoming quite the little artist! Currently, he is very into drawing snakes. These “snakes” consist of a basic straight or sometimes squiggly line, but to me, they are the most beautiful lines I have ever seen!
What first made you want to become an artist?
I come from a long line of creative men and women. My grandmother, Bobchi, made the most amazing dresses in her day. I can remember watching her sew when I was younger and I was just in awe of her talent, and I now own some of her vintage fabric that is just breathtaking. My mother makes the most beautiful quilts and my father is a talented inventor — so creating has always been a part of my life. When I was little, I was always “that” girl who showed up to sleepovers with a backpack full of beads and crafty stuff.
Please describe your creative process.
I am a night owl and seem to get most of my creative surges during the night. My process begins by collecting old broken skateboards. Once I get a new batch of decks, the sorting begins. This part to me can be accurately compared to Christmas morning for a five-year-old. I find the most amazing scuffed graphics and different colored plies — the possibilities are endless.
From there, the cutting begins. This is by far my favorite part. I love the way the blade sinks through the board, the sound and the smell. After my pieces are cut, I do all my sanding and fine tuning. I never imagined I would love power tools; hardware stores are no longer a bore! I love the entire process right down to the picture taking.
What handmade possession do you most cherish?
There are two handmade gifts that I will forever cherish. A Boston terrier painting that my brother, David, made for me and a Christmas tree skirt made by my best friend, Jackie. The best handmade gifts ever!

What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?
Read these Interviews and pay special attention to question number seven! This question has taught me so much. Here are some of the memorable answers to number seven that have helped guide me on my Etsy journey.
- “Please” and “Thank you” go a long way.
- It’s okay to say “No” sometimes.
- Grow at a natural pace.
Here is one I just made up… when’s it’s 3 a.m., go to bed! You will feel fresh in the morning.
What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see?
I love being able to “heart” my favorite Etsy finds but to make it even cooler, I would LOVE to be able to put all my faves into categories. This is purely a selfish request. I just think it would be fun to have a “house,” “vintage digs,” “baby stuff,” “dog,” etc. folders. So if my sister-in-law-to-be comes over, I could just open up the “wedding” folder to show her all the stuff I hearted for her to check out, instead of having to page back to find it all.
How do you promote your work?
I have to give props to my husband here. He is my biggest fan and my very own personal promoter! He is super talented with marketing and graphic design. I also have a blog, a Facebook fan page, and Twitter.
In ten years, where would you like to be?
Hopefully, fingers crossed, settled into the house that we are currently renovating, watching my would-be 13-year-old son killing it on a skateboard (while I’m) still completely covered in skateboard dust) or maybe just the president of Etsy… I dream big, what can I say?

Am I really the first person to hate this idea? As a skateboarder, I know plenty of people that would love to, oh, I don't know, SKATE on these. In particular, the older boards that are harder to find. Once they're gone, they're gone. I've searched for many of the older boards and some of them have completely disappeared.

@GinsuVictim "My process begins by collecting old broken skateboards." I sometimes feel the same when I read that someone ripped apart an old hat to make a new creation. Sometimes we have to accept that the item we might love is past it and could have a new life in a new way.

@janinebasil "My process begins by collecting old broken skateboards." They don't look broken to me in the photo above (at all). If they are broken, then that's great, I have no problem with the re-purposing of these. I don't care about the green movement or anything like that, these things are wood and will break down anyway. As long as these aren't decks that can still be used, continue doing what you're doing. I just don't buy that these are broken based on the photo.

What a great idea! I love the whole concept of repurposing things in a previously unthought-of way... using skateboards as jewelry, for instance. I am jealous of both your creativity and your house renovation, good luck in both endeavors. (Though with talent like yours, I doubt luck has anything to do with it!) Thanks for telling your story.

michellelenae says:
Fantastic work Lynn! I'm an ex skateboarder myself and have a pile of old decks that I could never let go of. There really is something so spectacular about every mark, ding and crack in each board. I appreciate your passion for the sport and for turning something old into something new. I hope your son does tear it up one day on the board and until then...keep inspiring all of us with your unique wearables!
