It’s that time again, and those of us behind the scenes at Etsy would like to share our merchandising plans for April. As we continue to think about the year ahead, we will be incorporating many of the concepts you shared in response to March’s report and we would like to hear more of your input! It is our goal to create a healthy balance between promotions for traditional holidays, seasonal changes and lifestyle trends.

Rounding Out March
  • Stay in the loop with March’s seasonal themes, holidays, dates to remember and trends in March’s Merchandising Desk Edition.
  • Promotional Opportunities for Sellers:
    • Etsy’s Euro Week: During the week of March 22-26, Etsy will be promoting all things European and we’d like nothing more than for you to get involved in the fun! If you like to make Treasuries, we’ll be looking to feature European-themed lists on the home page throughout that week. Pay attention to Etsy’s blog for more information on how you can participate in Etsy’s Euro Week promotions.
    • Etsy’s Voting Series: Keep an eye on the Announcements section of the Forums each Monday morning to find out about calls for nominations. Nominate an item from your own shop and other shops that fit the theme for a chance to be entered into the weekly vote. Items with top votes, along with other nominated items, will appear on Etsy’s home page and possibly an Etsy Finds email.
    • Promotional Forum Threads: Are you a new seller or know of an undiscovered shop? (Specifically Etsy shops that have opened in the last three months or have had under 15 sales.) Let us know in this Forum thread for upcoming promotional opportunities.
Stay Engaged in April
Our critical merchandising focus this month will center around spring, taking care of the environment, Mother’s Day, outdoor dwellings and a hint of glamor. You’ll find the extended list of topics we’re excited to highlight throughout the month of April below. We’re looking for your creative voice on each of the upcoming seasonal themes.
  • April Fool’s Day: Gag gifts, disguises, funny cards, pranks, and clever tricks to get the best of friends and loved ones as we kick off the month.
  • Easter: Easter is celebrated in early April. Take advantage of last minute sales by offering expedited shipping options and local delivery. See this article on how to update your location to make sure your shop can be found in our Shop Local feature.
  • Mother’s Day: Now is the time to list items that would make great gifts for Mother’s Day on May 9. Think customizable, personalized and heartfelt gift ideas to spoil Mom.
  • Spring: Spring cleaning, spring fashion, spring break, spring planting, and a fresh outlook encompass April.
  • Environment: Earth Day (April 22) is a great reminder of all the eco-friendly options we have. Think about the use of recycled, upcycled, reclaimed, natural and environmentally friendly materials, as well as items that facilitate earth friendliness, cleaning the air and being conscious of your surroundings.
  • Gardening: April showers bring May flowers! Think about prepping the ground for the upcoming color and bounty: watering, aprons, gloves, soaps, seeds, tools, planters, indoor gardens, flower beds, garden markers, labels and organic options.
  • Fashion: Spring fashion is at its peak. Meld bright and pastel colors with neutral and muted hues, light textured fabrics, references to nautical and scholastic styles, showing some skin and embellishments. April will also begin to introduce summer fashion so it’s a great time to start offering these options.
  • Home Decor: Find spring renewal with items for refreshing and organizing the home.
  • Artisanal Food: Celebrating the idea of garden to table and taking the time to plant and cook. Think recipes, tabletop accouterments, whole foods, seeds and gardens.
  • Outdoor Adventure: Travel, biking, hiking, camping, backpacking, outdoor sports, gear and other activities.
  • Weddings, Proms, and Celebrations: Spring touches on all aspects of the big day, including attire, decor, invitations, favors and gift ideas. Diamonds rule April, time to think glamorous formal attire, styling, and accessories for everyone from bridesmaids, wedding guests and upcoming prom attendees.
  • Graduation and Teacher Gifts: Personalization and customizable gifts, milestone cards, mementos, and keepsakes are clever and useful ways to say thank you to those who provide education.
  • Pets: Gear, feeding, clothing, accessories, toys, housing, furniture and accouterments for adventures with your furry friend.
  • The diamond is April’s birthstone, and April’s astrological signs are Aries and Taurus (Aries: March 21 – April 20, Taurus: April 21 – May 20).
  • April Trends:
    • Fashion: Nautical and military motifs, classic old-Hollywood glamor, vintage-inspired swimwear, aviation, rompers, rain/garden boots, debonair gentlemen, classic menswear styles and the cocktail dress.
    • Home: Farmhouse imagery, art, decor, rustic, quilts, repurposed and vintage industrial throwbacks, cast iron, heavy linens and canvas fabrics, and components of creating “the outdoor room” with the idea of blending the indoors with the outdoors.
    • Alfresco living: Market baskets and totes, bikes and bike imagery, picnics and flea market finds.
    • Color trends: Classic combinations such as navy and white, as well as earthy metallics in gold and bronze shades.
    • Decor: Globe and map imagery, foreign words.
    • Anatomical and natural history: Feathers, acorns, seeds, pods.
    • Animal hats and accessories with ears: Think baby, pet and adult versions.
    • Tech imagery: Cassette tapes, vintage cameras, video game accessories, vintage telephones, MP3 players and social media.
If you’d like to stay engaged and involved with the approaching merchandising themes, use them in your own artistic voice as you add to your shop. This can be translated in your listings, photos, shop announcements, descriptions, tags, titles, sales promotions and more. We’re excited to see your creative interpretations!

If you make items that would fit well with the themes outlined, try stocking up and listing them in advance to take advantage of potential shipping deadlines and site features. Do you already have items in your shop that meld well? That’s great! Now it’s time to revisit those items to make sure your tags, titles, and descriptions reflect keywords that shoppers might be looking for this time of year. This is also a great opportunity to revamp your item photography with a new look if you think they need some work. Check out some great how-to’s for item photography to get started.

If your items fall under the main thematic categories we’ll be highlighting this month, consider purchasing a spot in a Category Showcase. For those of you who enjoy making Treasuries, we’ll be looking to highlight lists that interpret these themes in a creative and cohesive way.

    thank you all so much for the Euro Week I hope you are planning to promote regularly on the "geographical base", t.i., FP, Featured Sellers and such proportionally to the regions represented by SELLERS on Etsy every month one week in the whole year for Europe would be way out of proportion, but it's a great start one more suggestion: maybe the Featured Sellers could stay on the FP for a shorter time to give place and opportunity for more people to be there sorry, if this isn't the write place for the last one

    A couple of other people mentioned this, but it hasnt been fixed; youre almost a full month off on Passover. It is really March 29th, not April 20th as you say above. I am so excited for spring! Some of my favorite things are themes for April, I think I may have to do some shopping :)
