This weekend’s Get the Look Decor is inspired by the New York City apartment of Etsy’s own Heather Burkman, a.k.a. hebo. She lives in a lovely East Village studio with her boyfriend Zack and their clown fish, Lucy. Nestled in a neighborhood filled with restaurants of every variety, farmer’s markets and self-serve “froyo” joints, Heather has created a peaceful retreat with rustic, old world style and Asian influences.

One of Heather’s favorite decorative pieces was created from her late grandmother’s collection of bells. She suspended the bells from a natural branch to create a unique art piece.

Heather says her decorating style was influenced by her father, a professor of Japanese history. His travels and art collection inspired her to start her own collection of distinctive pieces. 

Heather browses Etsy for interesting custom pieces and enjoys hunting through disorganized flea markets and thrift stores for items with character. A favorite pastime is acquiring beat up furniture from Craigslist, which she lovingly strips and refinishes in order to fit her home’s aesthetic.

Heather and Zack are lucky to have one of the most coveted features of any NYC apartment: outdoor space. Their terrace serves as a peaceful escape from big city life, providing room to garden, barbecue and entertain.

Heather saves space in her diminutive studio with a well-disguised Murphy bed. She and Zack covered the underside of the bed with a map of 1730′s Paris and added an elegant iron door knocker as a handle.
