Guest Curator: Handmade Evolution

Amy_bio_.jpgAmy Lowry is the voice of the popular daily design blog, Handmade Evolution. Launched in 2009, her blog features design trends, handmade, indie fashion and home decor. In addition, Amy has an Etsy shop, Field Trip, and also volunteers for a non-profit through their Etsy shop Just Work.

As a web and graphic designer, it was probably inevitable that I’d find and love Etsy! At first I was just a buyer, then I set up and ran an Etsy shop for the place I volunteer, Just Work. Just Work’s mission is to “foster dignified, gainful work opportunities for people facing multiple barriers to work,” such as physical disabilities, mental illness, and homelessness. From my work as a volunteer I found a deeper meaning in the handmade movement, which prompted me to start my blog, and then an Etsy shop too. Now, it seems I’m fully immersed in the world of handmade and loving every minute of it!

As my readers know — summer can’t come fast enough for me this year, so I recently booked a trip to California both as a surprise for my husband and also for some much needed R&R. It got me thinking about summer getaways, beach houses and the like!

I had a lot of fun rounding up Etsy finds for a road trip to the beach — first a few items that would be fun for a retro decor beach house:

This is going to be a cheery beach house, I’m sure of that! The bright hues in depuis’ photography always make me smile, and I am over the moon for these vintage vases from AlicesLookingGlass. The striped pillow above by milkandcookiesCanada would pull the look for the room together nicely, while the vintage safety deposit boxes from lacklusterco would make a unique display for plants.

Next on our list — what to wear while cruising down Route 101, stopping at beaches along the way?

First up a very sweet retro one piece from TheRedDolly. Then, when it’s time to get on our way again, some eco-friendly shoes from SMARTFISH, and a lovely high waisted skirt from ladymarshmallow. Dinner at a fish and chips shop along the coast? I love this bright yellow top from esoneofone.

And finally — some accessories to finish off the look:

You’ve got to protect those eyes, and these cute vintage sunglasses from sugarlily are perfect. Beach time means keeping it casual, and I think the bright tote above from bayanhippo would look great paired with a white tee and dark denim. Next, a headband perhaps? I’m amazed by the detailed sea coral headband from bethanylorelle‘s nautical collection. And last but certainly not least emedemarta‘s gorgeous anchor pendant, which would be a fun addition to any beach outfit.

Great picks, Amy! What would you bring on your beach getaway? Share in the comments below.
