There is only the slightest chance that you might cross Yokoo‘s path in the streets of Atlanta, Georgia. Holed up with the quiet company of old movies, she crochets about 15 hours a day.
Running a one-woman knitwear enterprise from home, Yokoo is an artist, a perfectionist and a ”total control” worker. She enjoys being a part of the entire process: thinking, designing, sketching, picking up the material, creating, photographing, promoting, trading and sending. She still gets butterflies every time she packages up a new order.

As a mantra of sorts, Yokoo quotes Woody Allen’s Husbands and Wives: “Giving up his hopes, compromising one’s dreams, is like putting on a grey hat.”

Enter our Yokoo Sweepstakes! Comment below to enter to win an English Thompson Hat. On Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at 5 p.m. ET we will pick at random one commenter. The most evocative handmade portrait yet! However, I don't believe an artist does their best work, when it comes out of the need to be loved. I just don't identify with that, it's kinda more conceptual for me. Perhaps the best work comes, more out of a need to love rather than to be loved :)

A wonderful expose and relate-able. I wish I was half as close to self-realization...unfortunately I feel I have a bit of a way to go. I really appreciate what Yokoo said about 'creating a subworld to protect yourself.' and I am going to work harder on that. Seems the older I get, the more sensitive I am to those things in the world that horrify and sadden me, especially when it comes to children/animals/environment. I thought growing up it would be the opposite-that old adage that we 'harden' with age? It's just not true.

What does the name Yokoo means? I believe words have their own spirit and so does names. If I translated it into my own words it would be 幽酷. 幽: serene and tranquil, 酷: bold or unyieldingly. When opposite attracts, that is when art is born.

Wow. I've been such a fan of your work for so long, but after seeing this video you've really reminded me about a lot of important things that we, as people, as artists, should always be thinking about. I really love and agree with so much of what you talk about in the video, and I'm so glad that some one else thinks that making THAT many pieces of art, clothing, whatever, by hand, as a representation of oneself, is also, like, such a beautiful thing!

I <3 how you never actually see Yokoo speak & that you don't really see her face until the very end. Perfect. I live in Honolulu so it's too hot for scarves & hats, but I constantly stalk items at her store. I'm thrilled because I will be moving back to the "mainland" for work by mid year. I plan to splurge on one of Yokoo's lovingly created works as I start my journey in a new place!

I realize this came out in November, but I am seeing it for the first time right now. This is the most honest and intimate Etsy handmade portrait I've seen yet. I sincerely love that it was styled in a narrative instead of an interview. This got right to my heart. Beautiful.

Yokoo - you're an original and an inspiration. Lots of posers try to copy, but they've got nothing on you. You are a true Etsy celebrity. and best of all? You're humble and kind enough to respond to convo's, comment on treasuries, and offer up interesting converstation. Bravo! And this video? wonderfully done!

So many aspects of Yokoo are close to perfection and the fact that she takes part in every facet of her work from idea to design to knitting to modeling and photographing is brilliant. So smart, in fact, that one can only admire her discipline, skill and originality for the pure art of it as well as the enterprise. I certainly do hope she takes her vitamins and gets enough sleep as well! Bravo, Yokoo! You have our attention and may you go far!!!

Yokoo is a true inspiration. To take a love of fiber, style and cozy connection and make it into a successful one woman cottage industry is very difficult indeed. Do do it with such panache is very unique. I love to watch her, to see what she comes up with next.

I thought I would share the whole poem... somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond by E. E. Cummings somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond any experience, your eyes have their silence: in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me, or which i cannot touch because they are too near your slightest look easily will unclose me though i have closed myself as fingers, you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens (touching skilfully, mysteriously)her first rose or if your wish be to close me, i and my life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly, as when the heart of this flower imagines the snow carefully everywhere descending; nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals the power of your intense fragility:whose texture compels me with the color of its countries, rendering death and forever with each breathing (i do not know what it is about you that closes and opens;only something in me understands the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses) nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

Film was quiet and complete...like its subject. Good advice to us who struggle to categorize ourselves and thrive as artists. "Artist" is a new way of looking at myself and yet, haven't I always been one? How did I not know? Thank you.
