Hello. My name is Kelly. And I am a wedding ninja.
That was my mantra during the weeks leading up to my Big Day. It’s what I told myself on a daily basis to keep from collapsing into a heaving ball of sad sadness. And screaming.
No. I would not allow the simple act of planning an intimate soiree for 100 of my closest friends and family bring me to the edge. I was much too strong a woman for that. Besides, I had a secret weapon under my white-tulle-swathed ninja belt: Etsy.
“Pshaw!” you say. Etsy can’t cut up hundreds of scrapbook-paper triangles and etch them with “RS” – my soon-to-be initial. Etsy can’t bake cookies for the dessert bar or press the vintage hankies that were destined to be tucked into the pockets of my bridesmaids’ dresses.
True story. But where did I get the ideas for the scrapbook-paper cocktail stirrers, and the dessert bar featuring upcycled serveware and the kickass hankies? Oh, you know where. You, my dear readers, have already drunk the crafty Kool-Aid. But indulge me …
My love affair with the greatest website ever (yes, that is really how I identify it, and no Etsy is not paying me to say that — although it’d be nice if they did) began in the summer of 2007. I was giving a potential new-hire the newsroom tour when I noticed her necklace: a domino pendant, hand printed with a tiny bluebird. I’d never seen anything like it. I grew up playing dominos with my Cuban family and loved the idea of taking something I’d always seen used as a game piece and transforming it into a fashion statement. Where on Earth did she find it? “Etsy,” she replied. “Etsy,” I jotted in my reporter’s notebook.

Shortly thereafter, I was fifty clicks deep and utterly entranced. The domino got lost in my Favorites folder as I drooled over handmade dresses, mixed-media paintings and letter-pressed note cards. (I think a full year passed before I finally got around to buying that necklace.)
By the time my now-husband, Seth, proposed two summers later, I was an Etsy connoisseur, having used it regularly to buy vintage housewares, wall art and countless gifts.

Our wedding ceremony would take place onstage at our favorite community theatre, a stage we’d shared before as actors. After our “one-night-only” production — titled “Holy Matrimony!” — we’d head to our city’s biggest arts center, The Banana Factory, where we’d party in the main gallery. Seeing as that it was a very “hurrah arts!” wedding, I knew Etsy would play a part, but I had no idea to what extent.
I can pinpoint my “Aha!” moment exactly. It was day three of my search for the perfect bridesmaid dress, when I nearly threw my MacBook across the room. I hated everything. Different shades of hideous, that’s what I was up against. Any former bride or bridesmaid will tell you. This was not news. But it was still infuriating.
I was resting my weary mind with some wedding porn when it struck me. You can get (basically) everything on Etsy. What was stopping me from finding a clothing designer I liked and asking him or her to make me whatever I wanted? In whatever color I wanted?
Within two weeks, I was in Manhattan’s garment district watching Carol Hannah Whitfield, of “Project Runway” fame, sketch my vision. I cannot tell you what a thrill it gave me every time someone asked about my girls’ dresses.
“Oh those?” I’d say, smoothing an errant hair in my Mad Men coif. “Why yes, I had those designed. Mm-hmm. By Carol Hannah… why yes, from the TV show.” Small smile. “Etsy,” I’d whisper. Wink.
Ok, that never actually happened, but that’s how I felt. FABULOUS. And it didn’t stop there: My gorgeous pocket-fold invites, with two lovebirds peeking out from the top. The brass owls that sat beside my floral-filled birdcages at the reception. The felt mustaches on a stick we posed with. The video-game cufflinks worn by Seth and his groomsmen and the delicate beads worn by my bridesmaids. My flower girls’ ivory frocks. The painfully gorgeous feather and vintage-rhinestone fascinator I wore in my hair, and the bride and groom playing cards taken from a 1970s wedding-themed board game, which I framed for our sweetheart table.

So many of the creative touches that defined my wedding — the ones that spurred people to come up to me and demand that I become a wedding planner, immediately — were lifted directly from the pages of Etsy and the inspired minds of its vendors.
