Let’s face it – social media marketing can be tricky at the best of times. It takes a lot of energy and focus to build an online community and stay connected to it. So what happens when you add the high-octane business of the holiday season to the mix? How can your blog, Twitter, and Facebook be effective marketing tools then?
Winter Wonderland Original 5 x 7 artwork by michellebruner
First, understand the lay of the land.

What do your customers really need during this time of year?
- They need context. They need to know why, among all those other gift ideas threatening to bury them, your product is a good choice for specific people.
- They need a story. They need to hear how your product is made, and what brought you to create it. They need a reason to become attached to you and what you make.
- They need a connection. In a screaming sea of marketing messages, they need to see that you’re a kind and interesting human being, and therefore worth listening to.
Okay. So how do you give your customers these things?

- Ways to save time and energy
- Helpful advice from an expert on how to choose and care for silver jewelry
- A glimpse into how someone might use your earrings

- There’s no question that good social media marketing takes time – and time is not something you’ll have in abundance during the holiday season. This is why it’s a good idea to do a little advance planning now.
- The holiday season is not the best time to start using social media tools. You simply won’t have adequate time to build enough of a following to make your posts count. But if you’re new to blogging, Twitter, or Facebook, you can still make your product more visible by putting your energy into responding to other people.
- Do you have any happy emails from your customers that you can quote in tweets or on Facebook? It’s important to send out positive messages that reflect well on your products. Maybe you could start up a little blog feature with your customers, where they tell you about the person they’re buying a gift for, and you post that story with pictures of the item on your blog.
- Take a moment on your busiest making and shipping days to share some photos of your studio in action – chaos and all! This does two things: gives a human glimpse of your business, and sends a subtle message: “People are clamoring for my product.”
- Should you do social media posts about the shows you’ll be selling in during the season? Absolutely. But remember that these posts will be interesting only to your readers who live near the show. Why not treat these folks like a special club, and offer them some kind of incentive for stopping by and saying hello — a few dollars off, a two-for-one deal, a special gift with purchase.

I've often wondered how a straight tweet would look to the tweet-te. Not that it's not visable when you send it but how well it's received. You make a good point. I use gemstones because I love nature and the rich colors. I give a portion to the Appalachian Service Project. these are things that need mention. Thank you!

Thanks, this was very insightful! It seems that we need to look at our media blasts from the point of view of the people receiving them. Take for example, this past election. I know several people who were totally turned off by all the ads and phone calls pressuring them to vote, from either side. People don't like media blasts. I think our customers are smarter than that and we need to be also. I will be more careful thinking through my tweets, etc, thanks!

Diane, great article! What I find really helps is creating a monthly content calendar. Doing this helps me plan how to join the conversation, including what issues related to the hand created jewelry I offer that I'll be discussing, etc. A monthly content calendar done ahead of time keeps me organized and engaged with social media marketing in a way that makes it less of a chore and actually fun. Have you tried this? It really works! Write me to discuss any time, and thanks again for the great article. Caroline

These tips are great! I always feel bad about badgering customers to buy stuff...because I know it does become annoying...but giving them a reason to buy makes me more at ease and comfortable with being a creative person, and less anxious about selling. I'm sure the customers appreciate that too, lol. Thank you very much! I also love that cupcake picture. Made me think of making red velvet cupcakes at 3 AM :-).

MartiniJewels says:
Great tips, thank you. When you give the example, "say you make hammered silver earrings..." I perked up, because that's exactly what I make. What I find really resonates with my customers is that I use sterling silver from recycled sources. THAT'S the part I really need to put out there. And you're absolutely correct, you don't want your social media to be a comment solely on your product. I try to incorporate interesting facts about jewelry so as not to always have it scream "Look at me!" Thanks for all your suggestions!

This is great advise. I especially like the suggestions on rethinking how to offer your product in ways the support your customer in their life and in their buying decisions. I have a fairly new shop here on etsy and every item I've sold I've always received an email with an inspiring story as to why they've purchased it and how the item is a keepsake or momento to the person they're buying it for - which is the exact reason I create in the first place. I believe items are more than the sum of their parts. I've wanted to share their stories but haven't know how without seeming like a pushy salesman that toots their own horn - which in my case would deplete the very reason I created the art piece - to connection and inspire. I am mindful not to create disharmony.
