“Hi! I’m Maya, and I’m an Etsy seller,” said the tiniest, cutest little Etsy seller I’ve ever met. “That’s my mom,” she pointed to a calm woman. “But I’m the boss.” I met Maya and her mom, Deirdre, when I was on a panel at the Atlanta campus of Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Maya’s precocious creative energy was bursting at the seams, and it was clear that she made her mother very proud. When I asked if they were missing school to be at the panel, they explained that Maya is homeschooled. Integrating her creative projects into her day-to-day is a form of hands-on learning.
Homeschooling is like having a handmade education for your kids. When my husband John and I first considered homeschooling, we wanted to make sure Maya received a well-rounded education that included creative and practical life lessons. We hoped this would be similar to how our parents raised us, and we wanted to design it to prepare her for survival in the real world, while allowing her to be who she really is. Mainstream education often does not recognize the value of creative learning.
Designing a homeschool curriculum, however, was a major challenge. We found ourselves staring at a warehouse full of subjects, workbooks and teacher’s manuals trying to decipher what programs and subjects we felt we should teach. Along with the basics the state and federal guidelines suggests, we felt that passing on creativity at the core of learning would keep subjects like math, science and grammar engaging and fun.
Ever since I signed up as a member of Etsy since 2007, Maya would ask me about starting her own shop. She had some great ideas, so starting a shop on Etsy provided a well-rounded and practical platform to teach Maya about designing unique clothing, fashion, and accessories. Displaying and selling them on Etsy is a creative outlet that has taught Maya real life lessons about how you can do what you love and be creative, create awareness in a unique community that loves handmade, fun, quality items and the subtleties about marketing and trendsetting.

In tough economic times, the first educational programs to be cut by school administration are arts and music, which are easy targets. There aren’t a lot of those teachers and if they protest, how much of a fight would a handful of teachers be able to put up? The evidence of benefits from creative arts and music at the core of learning continue to manifest in major medical and scientific studies. For parents, it’s a matter of what we already know — that creative education builds self-esteem and increases cognitive skills that benefit children throughout all aspects of life.
Parents are our first teachers, and I remember my mom taught me how to sew and cook. When I made my first dress I saw how a pile of fabric can turn into something really pretty, and that gives you a sense of pride, joy and accomplishment and almost seems like magic. I can see the same joy on Maya’s face when she creates something. Going out to a art supply house or fabric store becomes an opportune educational experience for Maya, where she learns about measurement, conversion, how much materials costs, and how to buy supplies and keep cost in line with how much profit you hope to make. Maya’s dad loves to cook and has her following the recipe, preparing and measuring out the ingredients for the dish. This is a great way to get her to eat healthy foods, and will lay the groundwork for how to cook for herself when she gets older.
Working with me to create and manage her shop provides opportunities to transmit values to her that I feel are important. It also shelters her from the barrage of negative influences that exist today in schools and on the Internet. It opens conversation and I make time to share creative things I loved to do growing up, and at the same time teach her about managing her own business, the responsibility and challenges of owning your own business and money management at a young age, before she goes off to college.
Homeschooling Maya has allowed plenty of quality time, providing individualized attention and instruction, not usually found in public or private schools. As parents, my husband and I understand Maya, and we can personally observe her progress, what areas she finds difficult and help her with the attention she needs.

Maya loves to draw, create and animate her many characters and designs, as she is set on having a career in design and animation. She loves playing with her best friends in her neighborhood and found new friends her age during her tennis lessons. She has also made friends online through her Etsy shop who have bought items or hearted items all over the world, from Australia to India and Japan. These days, with the influence of social media networks like Facebook and Twitter, Etsy provides a niche and positive experience to create, learn and develop friendships at the same time in a diverse, real world environment. When Maya goes on trips to visit her cousins in Charlotte, or with her dad to run errands around town, the flexibility of running a shop on Etsy from her Netbook or dad’s iPhone allows her to keep up with her customers and fulfillment of orders when she’s not home.
On top of all the learning materials, sports and after school activities, homeschooling and working with Maya’s Ideas shop on Etsy go hand in hand, as both entail a lot of love, patience and encouragement. Homeschooling isn’t easy, but who says it can’t be a creative and fun experience? For parents who don’t have the time, living the creative life after school, on the weekends or during summers can provide the same level of creative engagement and enjoyment.
Thank you, Maya and Deirdre! It was such a pleasure to meet you in Atlanta!

Sure, we drove around in an old VW van and everyone thought we were the strangest hippy family ever, but it is an experience I would not trade for the world. It allowed for a creative opportunities around every corner. Maya is just darling and super artistic. What a delightful article!

I have home schooled our youngest daughter for the past two years. During this time, she has watched me launch my etsy business, and has given loads of great input, honest criticism, and creative ideas. Kids really are wonderfully creative, inherently. Home schooling has been as educational for me, as it has been for my daughter. She is a constant reminder to me to embrace the childlike sense of wonder many of us lose as adults, enjoy this moment, and to not allow schooling to interfere with our education.

This reminds me a bit of my childhood. My dad would dedicate his evenings after work to what we called "art nights." We would usually do it on the weekends when my sister and I didn't have to get up early for school the next day. Dad would get out sketch paper or one of his oil paintings, and we would grab whatever project we were working on, and turn the dining room table into a studio. Dad usually only progressed a little on what he was working on, since he spent most of his time teaching and encouraging my sister and me. Art nights were really special to me, not only because of the fun of doing art together, but also because of the meaningful conversations we always ended up having. I look forward to continuing the tradition one day when I have children.

As an artist and former public school educator, it is so easy for me to see the value of creative work integrated into homeschooling. My work (sewing) is part of our day, and my kids love to "help" with little things, or at least rifle through my supplies and discover their purpose. I write about this in my blog at www.qwinkshop.com. I'm so glad that others can see the educational value in their, or their children's creativity! I hope to homeschool my own children and the arts will definitely play a huge role in their education!

I'm so happy to see the *comments* be positive as well as the article itself. I love the way Etsy and Etsians encourage this way of learning. To the one commenter who wasn't sure how homeschooling helps kids "deal with people," I was public-schooled from K to 12 and I *still* can't deal with most people. My experience was that despite attending school with kids from many different walks of life, I never actually got to know the kids who were different from myself for the most part, because we all split off into our own little social groups. I have also noticed an upswing in the number of adults who do not know how to deal with people from age groups different than their own. I also notice too many people being too willing to throw away friendships because they have "outgrown" them, and of course when you "outgrow" something you have graduated from it and no longer have to deal with it. School isn't even real life, but people live their whole lives under the school metaphor if it is all they knew for most of their waking hours throughout childhood. It's really sad. It's not the public education part that bothers me. If it actually were education and not child-herding, I would be fine with it. I know many parents have no choice and must put their kids in school and I sympathize but I wish it didn't have to be that way. We're not even as well-educated a populace as we have the potential to be--and the solution offered is more school hours. Yeah, that's working real great so far. Thanks. I think it's coincided with the desensitization to the value of friendships and social diversity that I mentioned earlier. My daughter tells random strangers on the street that her school is "the red house." Our home is red brick. It makes me smile every time I hear it.

as a mom of 2 and a half year old the homeschooling idea is growing on me, very much indeed. i only have to get the idea into my partners head, yet! learning and creativity go hand in hand, learning from people you know and trust in your known environment that is also tailored to your needs, how can that NOT work out?? most people just live their live mainstream, from school, to friends, to (lack of interests) and so on. i wished there were sooo many more people out there like maya and her mom and the rest of all the artists here on etsy!

Nobody mentioned math skills specifically, but having a shop would be a such a fun way to teach arithmetic skills, decimal points (money!) and so many other math skills which in the classroom sometimes feel boring or irrelevant.

I was home schooled and definitely feel it greatly impacted my creativity, both in the items I create and the options I have in life. I think it has helped me see life from a broader viewpoint than I would have had with a more traditional education. Very inspiring story I will be sharing it with my own ten year old!
