The Local Items filter on search results connects shoppers with relevant Etsy items close to home (especially helpful for those last-minute purchases). We want to make sure you’re all set up to connect with those buyers. Happy pin-pointing!
We at Etsy encourage buyers to shop locally — not only as a way to help get the right gifts in time for the holidays, but because supporting local economies is where it’s at!

How can you make sure local buyers (and press!) can find you? First you must set your location in your public profile. Here’s how:
- Go to Your Account > Public Profile.
- Type in your city, and your location should auto-fill.
A Few More Tips for Being Found:

1. Promote your location in interesting places! SaltAndPaper makes sure to call out the fact that their work is “handmade in Brooklyn” in a shop banner. Make sure you talk up your hometown in your item listings and shop profile, too. These areas of your shop are indexed by Google, so even a simple “Made in Chicago” can help a local reporter or shopper find you through a web search.

2. Join a local Etsy Team. Not only will you gain an instant support group, but promoting together can really make an impact.
3. Blog (or use other social networks) to promote your favorite local destinations (independent craft stores, your favorite cafe, etc). Support your neighborhood hangouts, and you’ll connect with like-minded and local people! (This kind of content is also a good draw for other nearby bloggers, buyers and press contacts.)

I love this new tool. It is very encouraging to see other artists in my rural area. One thing I did notice though that may need addressing.... If I typed in my town and the abbreviation for my state, I got different shops than if I typed in my town and the whole state name. If you live in Southwest Virginia, you may arrange to pick up at my studio on the farm, or I could possibly meet you in Roanoke -- don't be shy, just convo me!

Encouraging sellers to properly fill out thier location correctly is certainly an admirable stance to take and as a buyer it is not only important to know for a variety of reasons but a source of irritation when looking it up only to find that not only is it filled out poorly but some times with multiple locations in multiple countries or something so bogus it is not clear what world it is on much less if the location might be close to where I am located. There are some items that are so basic as to their need that I am surprised that they are not required as part of setting up a shop.

Selling local is great. However I have not found a way for my local customers to avoid having the shipping charges added to their order. Yes I know I could just say "I will send you a new invoice" but this is not as professional as it could be. I suggest that Etsy find a way for the buyer to designate themselves as a local buyer so that shipping fees are not added to an invoice that will be hand delivered.

I can attest to the importance of setting your location and including it in announcements, etc! I've recently received a large order for a downtown Chicago consulting firm who wanted to use local photography in their design. They searched Chicago and sure enough there I was. I've also been invited to show my work locally and had sales for last minute items to people who wanted to come pick them up. It's a great way of letting local folks put a face to the name behind the shop too! Great post!

I'm European and to be able to focus my shopping to European countries could be of great help, also because items coming from, e.g., US can be surcharged of additional taxes (up to 20 USD, that's money). Under this perspective, Shop Local doesn't seem of great help to me.

I remember reading something stating you have something up your sleeve for after the holidays? I was wondering if I need to bookmark every page or if there is a link already to "Holiday Boot Camp" with everything in it? Please Advise...if there is time.:) At this point I have been telling everyone to check it out at "Holiday Boot Camp!" Thank you again! WONDERFUL; WONDERFUL idea ya'll had! :) "tanks :)"

What a great feature! I make custom ergonomic canes and they need to fit the user, so being able to see and test drive my canes gives my clients even more of a sense of stability in their purchase. I can work from afar and communicate with the client via e-mail, phone and photos to get to understand what they need and want in a cane. My canes are made for comfort, stability and style. The cane use now has a choice of an artful walking aid to regain their confidence in their step and their pride.

This is brilliant! I'm actually working to fill a large order with a local boutique and I think it's been one of the best ways of getting your name out there. I always search for those unique, quirky items in my local stores and I never find them and I'd never heard of Etsy until I began my store. Think of the poor masses who are deprived of your beautiful products!

I like this idea, does it pick up items within a mile range of your city? I ask because I'm the only one in my town but I know there are a few Etsians within 25 miles. I'd like to see a feature where you can adjust the mile distance searched from your location. Also, it only finds locations matching EXACTLY whats in a person's profile, i.e. I'm only found by Bangor, Wisconsin, USA not Bangor, WI, USA.... could we base this off zip codes instead so we actually find people at or within a distance of our zipcode?
