Indie hearts beat strong in Portland, Oregon, one of the craftiest cities in the United States. Working from Brooklyn here at Etsy headquarters, I think of Portland as our sister city.
Today, we are announcing that we are joining forces with the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) and the Portland Etsy Team. We’re calling our collaboration “I Heart Art: Portland.” We are forging this ongoing relationship to foster opportunities and offer support for the local DIY/craft/vintage community. As a group, we’ll be partnering to host a series of indie business talks at PNCA’s Museum of Contemporary Craft and a series of Etsy Craft Labs this spring. (In addition to our regular Craft Nights at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn, we’ve started collaborating with other museums such as the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco for similar hands-on sessions.)
Supporting local economies — especially through independent businesses — is important for Etsy, as a company and as a website built up on a vast network of local communities. Art schools and museums can help Etsy by serving as a home base for the local art and craft movement’s events, and Etsy can help by connecting curators, professors, students and members through our mutual passion for art, design, collecting and learning. We are thinking of this project in Portland as a pilot for Etsy’s outreach to local communities. Hopefully, Etsy will bring “I Heart Art” to other cities after this first run gets off the ground.
To kick-off this new relationship, Etsy, PNCA and the Portland Etsy Team will host an “I Heart Art” meet and greet at PNCA on Friday, February 26. This public event brings together the PNCA student body, the Portland Etsy Team, members of the Guild Council Program from the Museum of Contemporary Craft, and the thriving local arts and crafts community of Portland. Morgan, a.k.a. neonmorgan Etsy’s new Teams Admin, and I will be there in person to make new friends and meet old friends face-to-face. We can’t wait!
I Heart Art: Portland Meet and Greet — Friday, February 26 at 6:30 p.m. PT

dohhh I couldn't be further away! I'm over by Boston. Maybe something could be started over here at MassART (www.massart.edu), or Montserrat College of Art (www.montserrat.edu) or even a non-college creative place like The Eliot School in Jamaica Plain (www.eliotschool.org) or a local museum. Portland does sound like a really fun place. I've never been. Bring some art this way, guys! :)

I was SO excited when I saw PNCA had announced this! I'm a student there and though I'm not very crafty, maybe this will give me some incentive to become more than just a purchaser of fine DIY baubles. (And the Museum of Contemporary Craft is wonderful!) You guys are excellent for setting this up, see you on the 26th! (PS. To anyone who's considering a move to Portland... do it. It's way less rainy/gloomy than Seattle. And ridiculously arts/music/vegan/pedestrian/bike/LGBT/everything-you-can-think-of friendly.)

I've been pining to live in Portland for some time now. My nearest small city is Barrie, which has an incredibly strong art gallery, the macLaren, and my nearest big city is Toronto, which has an incredible DIY/Indie/Music/Fashion/Art scene. And although I sometimes wish I could pack it all in and move to Portland, Toronto is pretty great too. I studied in the Visual Studies program at U. Toronto and completely recommend it.

Again and again as I run across some of my favorite etsy items, I find they come from that part of the country. Why do you think so many creative people are in the northwest? My theory is that inspired, artistic people journey towards Alaska for the adventure and just poop out in Portland and stay. It must be a lovely place.

What an awesome idea. I hope they bring to it to other cities, like mine - Dallas. We don't have a local contemporary craft museum, but the art museums have been taking on more making and DIY-centric programs, and in Fort Worth too. WFU just started a student art gallery last year and SECCA is sponsoring a new initiative to join the artistic forces of the student bodies at the local universities.
