The Etsy Homefront Team is made up of over 200 shops, all owned by spouses and significant others of members of the U.S. uniformed services. We are male and female, of all ages, different nationalities and are located, quite literally, worldwide!
Our one common thread is that we are personally involved in supporting our countries on a day-in, day-out basis. Without prejudice, or regard for religion, race, nationality or political views, we keep the home fires burning and our families together, no matter how far apart we are. Jennifer Holmes, a. k. a. monsterbugblankets, is the wife to a wonderful helicopter pilot, and a mom and teacher to a crazy Bug and a rotten little Monster!
I live next to Fort Rucker, Alabama, the home of Army Aviation. On location is a small museum chronicling this leg of the armed forces. My husband and I like to take our kids there to roam through the helicopters and airplanes. One room has floor to ceiling plaques — all with names of army aviators who died in Vietnam. I get claustrophobic in that room — maybe because my husband is an army aviator, maybe because I don’t want to think about all those names.
After walking downstairs a bit, we always go upstairs in the museum — the kids like to climb in the cockpit of an Apache helicopter, flipping switches and pretending to fly. I usually snap a picture of them from my phone. The next room presents names not on plaques, but more befitting my generation: TV screens. The names scroll by of the men and women killed more recently in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Photo by the U.S. Army Aviation Museum
There’s Tim on the screen. I remember when he walked out of the airport in Frankfurt, followed by his wife and children. Man, he loved his family. My husband asks, “Do you remember him?” pointing to a name. “No, who was he?” He replies, “That Lieutenant who came just before we moved back to the States — the one who helped me put together the welcome home ceremony for our Battalion.” I remember now. “Oh yeah, he was newly married, right?” “Yes.”
I wonder to myself if they had time to have any children before he died. My husband and I are pretty silent at this point, as he recognizes more names than I do.
Unknown Soldier Honor Guard by ArtdeJoie
We wander to another wall full of pictures from Iraq. My husband points out people he knows and shows me places he’s been. These photos are from the beginning of the war, probably taken by people we know.
We walk out of the museum — my husband and I silent, lost in our thoughts. Our children don’t notice. They don’t know yet.
Memorial Day means more to me now than ever, probably because instead of a list of names I don’t recognize, they are now people I know. I’ve stood in front of them, shook their hands and breathed the same air. I’ve kissed their children, mourned with their wives, and cried in bed — alone — as my husband mourned miles away, in a hot desert.
Another name we know was added to the list last week. I did my best to shove down the sadness and not feel it this time, but by evening I was sobbing. Thankfully, this time I was in my husband’s arms. Not everyone gets that opportunity. Most find it an amazing privilege to honor their country by standing at the homefront, waiting for their loved ones to come home. And that’s who we are on the Homefront Team.
Etsy would like to thank those who serve their country and the families that stand by them.
If you are active duty or the spouse of a uniformed service member, past or present, and would like to become a member of Homefront, send a convo the team’s co-leader Robin at CreationsAnew.

Very touching article. One of the most profound moments of my life was standing at the Wall in Washington DC with my husband who was a Vietnam vet and looking at the endless names, and the vets all saying to each other "welcome home brother".

Monster- what a beautiful write up. We are Navy, and my husband's last command just left for deployment yesterday. All my friends, 1/2 currently expecting their first children (can we say baby boom), all just said goodbye to their husbands while they stay home, care for their growing bellies, and make birth plans, NOT including their husbands. We sacrifice chunks of our lives, and as you site in this article...we sometimes give up much more. However, we are full of pride, and in awe of bravery. I'm thankful to all that have served, are serving, and all that support them and recognize them. Thank you!

Today (just as I do every day) I give thanks to my friends and former soldiers that are still deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. And especially to those who have given their lives. You are always in my thoughts.

Jennifer and Teri, you did a wonderful job writing this piece. I sometimes find it hard to sum up how I feel during Memorial Day, because words get lost in the heaviness that I feel for our fallen men and women of the armed forces not just on this day, but everyday of the year. Thank you for showing with such clarity how it feels to mourn and appreciate our brave men and women who serve America and protect our freedoms.

Jen: Thank you for this write up. As an Army wife and Navy daughter each year Memorial Day holds a new a deeper meaning in my heart that is forever growing, not because of the holiday itself, but because of the connections that my family has with people serving and who have past away. Your post is truly beautiful and captures what I often try to articulate about how it feels when we go to remember the ones that we love, know and knew. Prayers to all the families this memorial day - may it truly be a day of peace.

My grandfather and three uncles served, but my dad was the only one to actually be deployed into action during the Korean War. I served 10 years with the U.S. Army and I am the only military service member of my generation in my family. I have a special bond with my father. We have an understanding that only two people who have served in the military can share, even though I served 35 years after he did. Thank you for the wonderful article that made me pause to think a little deeper today.

How did Enuwbe spend this memorial day weekend. I guess like most, at the side of a pool enjoying the sun with my three kids. However, my husband spent the weekend in Washington D.C. at a gravesite in the national cemetery. I have never made it public that Enuwbe is owned by a military spouse and veteran. :) I keep my military affiliation pretty quiet on Etsy. As a military wife, the military can often make all the choices for you. So, etsy is my alter ego. For anyone reading these comments, you are the few to know this little secret. :) Closing my shop to prepare for deployments and moves is nothing new to us. :) Thank you HomeFront for the wonderful memorial day tribute!

I enjoyed your article very much. As a former Marine married to another former Marine I have been both on the frontlines and in the home trenches. I can tell you that both sides are equally difficult. Something our family does on Memorial Day (and Veteran's Day too) is to put out flags on the graves of all those veterans locally who have gone before. There are 3 cemetaries our family alone has volunteered to be responsible for and we work with others each year to do the really big one in town and several other small ones. Each year the number of veterans that are able to come out to help dwindles. Each year there are more flags. It is truly an humbling experience. Thank you etsy and the HomeFront Team for honoring all veterans and military. Thank you to the lovely people who wrote the article. God Bless You.

To the authors of this article and to the HomeFrontTeam, thank you for honoring the veterans with this wonderful article. Coming from several generations of Veterans, Memorial Day has always been a day of remembrance for my family. NOTE TO ETSY: I was hoping to see more Front Page Selections devoted strickly to Veterans and Memorial Day this past weekend (or at least on Memorial Day)to show Etsy's support. Unfortunately, this was not the case. There were many treasures prepared by Etsians in Treasury, Treasury East, Treasury West with a Memorial Day theme that could have been selected for the FP; enough that Etsy could have run them all day. I persoanlly believe, that we as citizens, can't do enough to bring attention to remembering those that gave the ultimate sacrafice for this country. Etsy, please consider dedicating Treasuries on Veterans Day to a Patriotic Veteran Theme only. There are 364 other days of the year to market the rest of our Etsy items.

Thank you for this beautiful article, it really struck a note in my fairly young heart. I have 4 uncles who have all served in different branches of the military, all brothers of my dad who is the youngest of them. Though not all of them are alive today, they still hold a place in the memory of my dad. He was watching Band of Brothers yesterday, and I could tell it stirred up memories of his brothers telling stories of being in Vietnam, Korea, and Japan. I currently have a cousin(more like a brother) who is in Afghanistan. He's a Navy corpsman (pardon my spelling if it's wrong) and he's attached to a group of Marines, staying with an Italian unit for the time being.(He said they make the BEST pizza :) I feel it's not enough for me to say thank you for what you and your husband have been through, but for telling your children about the wars past. It's sad to know the younger generation may not have the same perspective or knowledge or appreciation for those who have served and are currently serving. With all the thanks an 18-year old heart can hold, thank you and God Bless
