3/15/11 Update: We’re excited to announce that the Space Craft Contest final judging will be held this Friday, March 18 at Etsy’s headquarters! We have a stellar panel of judges, including:
- Steve Robinson, NASA Astronaut
- Susannah Locke, Popular Science Magazine
- Shaifali Puri, NY Academy of Sciences
- John Matson, Scientific American
- Peter Giles, NYC Center for Space Science Education
- Lee Billings, Science Writer and Editor
- Rob Giampietro, Project Projects Design Studio
- Maria Popova, BrainPickings.org
Our own Alison Feldmann, Matt Stinchcomb and Randy Hunt will also be on the panel representing Etsy. This distinguished group of judges will review the inspired work of the contest finalists and choose the three best in category winners and one grand prize winner. Winning artwork could be sent up into space on board one of NASA’s last Space Shuttle launches!
While we wish that everyone could attend the final judging, due to limited space it will not be open to the public. However, we will be tweeting updates from the event and will announce the winners on Monday, March 21 on the Etsy Blog, as well as photos from the event. Let’s wish our finalists the best of luck. Stay tuned to see the winners!
__________
12/8/10 Update: Congratulations to the Space Craft Contest finalists! (We are one step closer to crafts in space!) Thanks to everyone who entered and voted, your participation has been truly out-of-this-world. View the finalists here and if you have any questions about the contest, see the FAQs. Stay tuned on the Blog to learn about the final judging event in the new year!
If you’ve ever been inspired by astronauts, black holes and zero gravity, you’re in luck! Etsy is partnering with NASA to host an exciting contest.
After 50 momentous years and over 130 missions to the cosmos, NASA‘s Space Shuttle Program will draw to a close in 2011 as it reaches its long-term goal of completing the International Space Station. To honor the program and celebrate its many accomplishments, we’re calling for designs inspired by NASA, its programs and the wonders of space exploration. Invigorate your inner maker with all that is known (and unknown) about our universe.
So get on board! There are three categories under which to enter your design(s):
- 2D Original Art (painting, drawing, hand-pulled print, mixed media or flat collage)
- 2D Art Reproduction (photographic or computer-generated print)
- 3D Art (any size or material — this includes anything not 2D, wearable art and soft sculpture are acceptable)
With the whole cosmos for inspiration, the contest prizes are beyond stellar:
- Grand Prize Winner (1): The Grand Prize winner will receive a $500 Etsy shopping spree and an all-expenses-paid trip with a guest to attend the shuttle launch at Kennedy Space Center in Cocoa, Florida in February as NASA’s VIP guests. Includes a VIP tour.
- Best in Category Winners (3*): Best in Category winners will receive $250 and swag from Etsy and NASA.
*Please note: the Grand Prize winner will be taken out of the running for Best in Category. - Winning designs (or photographs of designs) may even be flown up into space on the shuttle!

To get your intergalactic energy flowing, visit the expansive NASA Image archives for inspiration. The photos and renderings are available to use as part of your designs, but are certainly not required.
The deadline to enter is November 2, 2010. For information on how to enter, judging criteria, official Rules and Regulations, etc., go to the NASA Space Craft Contest site. We apologize in advance that the contest is limited to United States residents only, 18 years and older.
Want to follow the contest? Stay tuned here on the Blog, where we’ll update you as it progresses through various rounds of judging (including your chance to vote!) and on to the final shuttle launch.
Best of luck!

Man oh man! Gonna give away my age here (to those who know their space facts), but John Glenn orbited the earth three times on my third birthday! I thought he did it for me, and had my mom help me write him a letter to thank him! He wrote me back, and I've been a space nut ever since! Since I didn't make it as an astronaut, nothing could make me happier than to have a piece of my work go up in space!

Once again...I am increadibly disappointed that Etsy have chosen to run a competition where it is only open to US residents. My mind was whirling with a myriad of ideas as its such an inspirational subject...but no, once again you have confirmed that US users are top priority.... seaurchin etsy and NASA are both based in the US, plus NASA is a US government organization. If you think it's so unfair that this contest is for US residents only then you need to do some research and see just what is legally involved in running contests and just why they are limited to specific countries. I've seen plenty of contests run by the BBC that I can't enter, I don't gripe and moan about it because I don't live in the UK. I know it's a legality thing, not a popularity contest, nor are they doing it to snub anyone else. It all boils down to laws.

This is so awesome...after retiring from the military my father gave most of his life to a second career with NASA in Mississippi where they tested shuttle engines for...the obvious...space shuttles. My father was a Computer Systems Analyst and worked almost twenty years at night. He was given the priviledge of accompanying one of the shuttle engines (riding in the 18 wheeler truck driving it) to NASA @ Kennedy Space Center in Florida. I believe that was probably the highlight of his career. Once he had associates that he communicated with on a daily basis, that were based in California, come to Mississippi for a visit. I had the priviledge of cooking a meal for them. I prepared Gulf Coast Flounder Stuffed with a Crabmeat Dressing as the Entree. One of the associates, when he returned to California, sent out radio signals anouncing in space, that Annette Blocker was the "BEST COOK IN THE WORLD" and it is still out there bouncing around somewhere...so I will not be surprised if, when we are first contacted by an alien species, if they don't come looking for me to cook for the *smile*...it would be awesome to add a painting of my father in his NASA cap sitting at his computer, to the stuff floating around in space via this competition!!!!!!!! Cool...very cool thing!!!!

seaurchin says:
Ok...I wasn't going to comment again,as griping in public is unprofessional.....but I feel it needs to be said. Etsy professes itself to be an international community (The BBC does not....)and I can understand that the NASA prize, for legal reasons may not be open to all....and also a difficult one to pass up from the Etsy team....but.... You did this before, Etsy...a couple of years ago with a Halloween contest and I would have thought you would learn from the backlash that caused that it upsets a large amount of your users. At the time of the Halloween contest it was about 40% US users and 60% overseas I don't know what the statistics are now. Although I wouldn't like to take away the opportunity of US residents to win the big prize, I do think you should find a way round this to include the rest of the World. I think last time there were two contests, the main one with the prizes and a seperate one where the prize was a showcase of all the best non-US entries...not ideal, but a compramise, and only because we complained. It is not actually about winning prizes, who enters such a large competition knowing they will win? It is about the insensitivity to the majority (still the majority?) of your users. The 'not open to non-US users' needs to be right at the top....before we get all excited, and you do realise that your big, exciting, countdown to the competition on twitter was prime European Etsy time, for those of us who do not have the privilage of being able to 'quit our day jobs'? If you are an American company, that's fine....just let us know so we know where we stand. *sits back waiting for the flaming ;) *

acaciacrafts says:
Yep, annoyed that this is not open to all. Why not just make the grand prize open to us residents only and let the rest of the world pit their talent against the US for top of category. We are all, after all, putting dollars in Etsy pockets, not to mention getting the value of the company way up there. The whole world is proud of Nasa's achievements and many countries have collaborated with projects being flown out on the shuttle. We all would like to celebrate the years of work with our space inspired work. Watching the footage of the first moon landing is still one of my most vividly remembered TV moments as a child. I think the value of advertising by making the contest worldwide would be enormous too, I know most of the people I talk to have not heard of Etsy and that means a big market could be being missed. Good luck to all, however. Janice

This is GREAT. I'm lucky to be American and just wish there was more notification time for a project like this. I also wish that etsy could find a way to INCLUDE the Rest of the World in some way because excluding anyone from anything keeps the mentality of "we are all different" going and growing. In the bigger reality of life, WE ARE ALL THE SAME. We all grieve when we suffer loss. We all bleed the same color in accidents or war. We all struggle daily with the choices we get to make that determine our attitudes and perceptions. Lets change our focus, from what makes us different to what we share that makes us the same ... like, We are All spiritual beings, sharing the physical experience ... "Each day is a Gift, that's why it's called the Present ... Peace and Love ...

sorry, I'm another one of these angry internationals. ... but celebrating this "INTERNATIONAL space station" while excluding internationals is really a little ridiculous, don't you think ? even though it's just a design contest, to me this seems really symbolic. thank goodness I never liked NASA. I'm sure it's great for etsy and US citizens, but sorry, I have to laugh : Haha.

I'll never forget moving my roomate across the country road trip style to Florida. I said there are 2 places I have to see... and one was getting up at the crack of dawn to go to Coco beach to see the Space Shuttle take off from the Kennedy Space Center. My roomate kept her face in the pillow as I made my way on a cold February morning to Coco Beach. I'll never forget the vision of that shuttle taking off. Has anyone ever stopped to think Americans....pay with their tax dollars for NASA. They also may have never thought that maybe just maybe Etsy didn't decide all the rules alone. Stop being a bunch of negative Nellies. Jr. kitty says no hissing please. Peace n Purrr =)

DANG. I wish this was available to Canadian residents. When is Etsy going to become more Canadian friendly? I've noticed this in other areas with Etsy, like the Fedex discount, the pricing always showing up as US first to buyers, even though I am a Canadian seller. I love Etsy so much, but I am noticing these things more and more. How about featuring Canadian treasuries or a way to search Canadian sellers...is there something already geared towards this? Love to ALL Etsy sellers, no matter where you are in the world!

Well, I was going to celebrate & say something really cheesy like "Go Etsy, light years ahead of the rest" but really... a competition on a global marketplace celebrating the International Space Station that's only open to residents of a single country? I appreciate the fact that Etsy is US-based, but if you're really trying to be international you should do better than this.

Ok... So us internationals may not pay for NASA, but we do pay our Etys fees! Admin, are you even reading these comments? There are simple ways to include the rest of the World. Maybe not in these prizes, but a showcase of the best international entries perhaps? Sorry to be a 'negative Nellie' but it is galling to be excluded from something you put a lot of effort and money into...for no good reason. It gives the impression that etsy admin do not care about their international members. Which is a great shame!

Sorry other contries can't participate, I hope the unhappy contestants will find another contest that fits for them! This is a partial explanation that I found on the internet about international contests (How Stuff Works): Contest law varies even more between different countries. If you were to open up a contest to people all over the world, you would have to research the law in every single country on earth, to avoid getting yourself in legal trouble. For a typical promotional contest, this is just too much work. The legal fees for the required research would be much more than the payoff of the promotion. Additionally, there are some problematic legal questions inherent in any international contest. For example, if something were to go wrong, -- say, the prize was lost in shipping -- what court would the contest winner go to? It would be a very tough legal question just figuring out who had jurisdiction. What it comes down to is that it's just too much work for a company to find out how to cover themselves, legally, in multiple countries and in all states. After all, the typical rules and regulations of a contest running only in the United States take up 20 or so paragraphs. Just think how small a company would have to make the print to cover itself internationally!

This is so incredibly, DIY craftspeople and NASA!! This is truly an amazing opportunity & gives me hope and inspiration for what is possible through ETSY... Etsy does have unexpected networking opportunities. My sister put her puppets on ETSY, and out of the blue Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry contacted her and ordered 50 puppets for their Jim Henson exhibit! Her site is Puppet Palace if you want to check it out. This same sister also models some of my jewelry in my shop, yes, she is crafty and beautiful. Anyway, here's to science and art coming together!

Hey, I thought that Etsy was supposed to be international! Why limit the entries to Americans? Particularly ironic, when you consider that it was the view of earth from space that brought the idea of "one world" to human consciousness. P.S. The entries are brilliant!

Fantastic entries! Such amazing talent! Congratulations to all entrants - you're all winners. Too bad NASA and Etsy forgot Neil Armstrong's first words on the moon: "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." He meant all humans, not just those from his own country. Space belongs to all of us - or none of us - yet only USA dwellers can participate in this contest. This is a perfect example of why the world is in such a mess. Alien invaders won't have to "divide and conquer" - we've already done it for them.
