“I am not interested in art history, in the academies of styles, a succession of fads. Art is not about art. Art is about life, and that sums it up.” — Louise Bourgeois
This week’s edition of News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere salutes the life and work of renegade woman Louise Bourgeois, urban decrepitude, wooden skulls, ethereal slip dresses and creepy portraits.
Read on!
As an avid fan of decay and crumbling walls, the MC Motors warehouse immediately appealed to my dust-stained fingertips and rougher edges. Once a school, a depot and a garage, this 7,000 square-feet space is currently available to rent (with props!) for photo shoots and events. [Via THERSIC]
Raquel Allegra’s Spring 2010 lookbook is composed of flimsy gauze creations ideal for a twilight cruise (on a trusty Schwinn). [Via Rackk and Ruin]
Holy skulls! These hand-carved wooden mandibles and skulls are dotted with Swarovski crystals and gold detailing. Laurel Roth explains her “Food” series as such: “Lately [I've] carved from wood and modeled on animals we breed for food. Using a skull rather than a fully fleshed animal makes each piece more representative of a species rather than an individual animal — literally removes its face while still referencing what it is. For me that helps me to look at my own participation in food production and consumption (I really like eating meat, by the way) in a more anthropological way than a PETA way.” Read more about Laurel’s vision on My Love for You.
Hellan van Meene’s work is otherworldly. Maybe it’s just because I’m traumatized by The Shining, but all of the frozen children in hallways and ill-lit rooms gives me the pleasantest of jeebies. [Via Loveology]

R.I.P, Louise Bourgeois. Your style, vision and tenacity will not soon be forgotten.

Those bone carvings are something else - I've always been sort of awed by people who make things out of wood.

Always remarkable. How wonderful that Louise was still creating and had just finished some pieces a week before her death! If it is indeed true, as she said, that 'art is about life', then there's no retiring from making it. Otherwise, wouldn't that be retiring from life?

Louise Bourgeois is my hero. Thanks for including a tribute to her in this post, Alison. Bourgeois did this series of fabric sculptures that have been an inspiration to me on way too many levels - three of my favorite quotes (there are many!) "I have been to hell and back and let me tell you...it was wonderful." "Art is the guarantee of sanity." "Every day you have to abandon your past or accept it...and then if you cannot accept it, you become a sculptor." Thank you, Louise.

Louise Borgeois was one of maybe a dozen Female Artists that you could list by name if anyone asked "who are some famous WOMEN artists?". She was more than an Artist, she was an Icon. Her work will transcend time. I try to focus on art on my blog, if you are looking for more Art blogs! http://krystyna81.blogspot.com

Love the face of Louise Bourgeois, the lines and wrinkles are beautiful. The dining room reminds me of an old apartment I lived in once in north chicago. I didn't have a dining room table like that but it was an antinqe table with drop leaves. (I don't remember how to spell antigue at this moment.)
