In our Open Studio Tour series, we step inside the creative spaces of fellow Etsians to see where their process begins. This is a chance to get to know your fellow makers and perhaps find inspiration for your own studio!
What’s your name and what do you make?
I’m Stephanie Levy, and I’m an American artist living in Germany. I create original collages of interior spaces and domestic comforts inspired by travel around the world. I use a variety of materials, including handmade papers, watercolors, acrylic paints, and ink to make my mixed media collages.
The view from Stephanie’s studio
When did you decide that you needed a studio?
I’ve always had some sort of studio space to work in over the years. Now that I have two small children, it is easiest for me to work from home. In the process, our living room has evolved into my studio space. My children also like to “work” in my space, and they have their own creative table with their art supplies in the middle of the room. My computer, printer, and scanner are all set up here, so my present “studio” is a very multi-purpose room.

Did you make any sacrifices to create your studio?
I must admit that I would prefer to have much more space than I now have, and in the next couple of years I would like to have either a separate room to use as my studio, or a studio space that is part of a larger artists’ co-op. Right now, we are living in Munich, Germany and the cost of rent is outrageous here. I am constantly brainstorming ways to get a more optimal studio space for myself and my husband — he is also an artist and would like his own place to do his creative work too!
I suppose the biggest sacrifice is trying to make do with a lack of space and giving up on the idea of having a traditional, relaxing “living room” for the family. Our apartment sometimes feels like one big work area.

What is you favorite tool in your workspace?
I don’t know if it really qualifies as a tool, but I love using my collection of various papers that I collect from all over the world. I enjoy sorting through the different textures, colors, and patterns to find a combination of papers to use in my collages.
How many hours do you normally spend in your studio?
It varies, but I normally spend the greater part of my day in my studio. I bring my daughters to kindergarten, take a walk and run errands, then I come back home and work from about 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day. In the evenings, when my children are asleep, I often spend a few more hours finishing up work from the day, answering emails, blogging about my process, and when all has gone well — listing new artwork in my Etsy shop!
Is there anything you would add to your working space?
Another room and a few hundred square feet! I’d love to have separate office and studio spaces, and I hope that will become a reality in the not so distant future. I would also like to upgrade my scanner, and I wouldn’t mind a MacBook Pro, just in case Santa Claus is listening.
And last but not least how often do you clean it?
I clean my studio about once a week, or whenever I start a new project. During my work process, my space can get quite chaotic, but I do straighten up afterwards. A tidy, organized workspace helps me clear my thoughts and gives me fresh energy for beginning a new series of work.
Thanks so much! Best wishes to all my fellow Etsians. Please visit me at my blog!

If you have an interesting studio or workspace, share it with us on the Etsy Open Studio Tour Flickr pool, and you may be next in our Open Studio Tour post!

Your work is so nice! I need to clean up more often, like you do. I have a separate studio space but some of my projects inevitably end up in the kitchen or family room when I work on them with my family around. It can get piled up quickly!

I find it wonderful to involve children in the creative process because it always seems like they bring something to the table that us as adults kind of allowed to fade away. Pure imagination. My son came up with an idea for a soap that we are currently trying out to add to our collection that will be coming out in the spring. The Mud Pie Soap hopefully it comes out as good as it looks.

Lovely art, and helpful information. Reminds me I need to designate creative space and stick to it, keep it "red up", but somehow the vintage ends up mingling... which really slows me down.

cowboykeithsplace says:
Subconciously or maybe consciously, you can decide. But I suspect that one reason that you are able to be A) so productive and B) cope with the seemingly cramped space and or lack of a separate space is the fat that your daily routine involves physically getting dressed and leaving the space to bring your daughters to school and run your errands, which of course ends with you arriving to work, AKA, back home to the "studio". I know for my ownself, where my studio while a completely separate dedicated room in my home I still need the routine of showering, eating and dressing to feel as though I can be productive in the studio. It just does not happen in the same way while in my comfy cozy PJs, that's kicking around the house watching TV attire, not "business" attire. I reactually recall a former instructor of mine twilling me of an illustrator friend of his that actually needed to don a suit and tie to go into the studio. But hey...whatever makes the creative process flow steadily, right! Thank you for sharing your process with us.

Great article... however the blurb right on the front page that brings us to it is in need of an editor: "...this mixed-media artist makes it work, providing ample room for >>>>she and her kids<<<< to create the perfect mess." It should read "_her_ and her kids" to be grammatically correct.

I love what you’ve done with your space in spite of its size - it’s tidy, light, and happy! I also have 2 little kids and have a similar work schedule based around school time. I moved from New York to London so I also cope with a very expensive but tiny European apartment and work in our living room, which at first I thought was a hardship but now I think works well because the kids watch me working, have the colors and textures of my craft around them, they get inspired, and they help sometimes. For me, I can work while keeping an eye on them, quell the squabbles before they get bad, don’t have to get suspicious about silences(!), and through example show them the discipline of keeping things tidy and organized (whereas in a large environment, it’s easy to just leave things in a mess and walk away into another room). So even if we get a bigger apartment one day, I think I’ll keep working in the “big†room with the kids playing around me. Thank you for sharing! Very appreciated!

What an inspirational read! Your work is beautiful, Stephanie. I love that you work by natural light. And I am really taking your words to heart about cleaning your space between projects---it is so true that a messy space (my situation) interferes with creativity. I learned something very key from the photos of your space: you don't have unrelated clutter in the room! It really is dedicated to your artwork. That's a big aha for me---as much as I love my collection of Elmos, for example, they take up too much room in here! :-) Although I have a dedicated small bedroom for my artwork, it's very multi-functional (voiceover booth, household filing, writing, etc.). So eliminating all the unnecessary stuff is key! Thanks for the great interview and sharing your story and beautiful work.

sannachristina says:
Stephanie....what a great article. But remember what you are teaching your young children. Creativity is everywhere and anyone can enjoy the process if it is visible, not hidden in a room! Take it from a Grand Mom who has had both, a place crowded with little ones up to their elbows in paste, paint and buttons, and a separate room with a view; it is much more fun and important to have the children around you and being able to teach them your love for everything artsy. The single studio will come at the right time. My motto, Get up, Dress up, and Show up, no matter where your workspace is, and share your talent. "When I stand before God at the end of my life, I hope I can say I have no talents left, I used them all." Create!

You bring life to Tim Gunns advice "Make it work" and it works for you. I would imagine you will have a larger space soon, but your creativity functions in what is available for use. Thank you for letting us peek in.

A fabulous studio in such a small space that works. This is especially resonates with me as my studio is in our dining room and i just finished a wee bit of an overhaul myself this weekend. hard to keep it running as both while still looking good - studio AND dining room. oy. vey. getting there. now for some art/pictures in my tiny corner. guess i'll have to do some shopping on etsy. *dragging feet* ;-)
