Dear Etsy,
Welcome to the first of our Postcards From Europe, I hope this one finds you well.
About a month ago, Benedikta, my wife and coworker, and I were sent to Germany to kick off the on-the-ground portion of Etsy’s international expansion. We’ve opened a small office in Berlin from which we are running all of our European operations, and from where I’m writing right now. I plan to send you more postcards informing you about just what the dickens we’re doing here in das Vaterland and throughout Europe.
So, as this is our first card, perhaps we should begin by answering that very question:
Just what the dickens are we doing here?
Generally speaking, we, along with our crack team (Ameile and Stephanie in Paris, and Amity in London), are introducing Etsy to European audiences and promoting, supporting, and learning from our existing community.
To that end, European community, we want to meet you, and to share your stories and creations with the world. We want to give you the knowledge and tools to help you grow your businesses, and we want to do this in the languages you sprechen, parler, or hablar. Finally, we want your input so we can make Etsy the very best it can be for you.
Let’s stay in touch.
We want to know what is going on with you. What are you making? What’s happening where you are?
Let’s hang out.
Throughout the year, we will be traveling around Europe, organizing events, and hopefully, spending some time with you all.
Our next Etsy Meetup will be on Thursday, February 25, in Helsinki, Finland (details forthcoming).
Also, if you ever find yourselves in Berlin, let us know. We would love to meet you. We’re in Kreuzberg, near the Moritzplatz U-Bahn stop.

About Postcards from Europe:
Berlin-based Etsy Admin, Matt and Benedikta send postcards back to the Etsy offices in Brooklyn updating us all on Etsy’s European operations. We never know from where they will be sent, what they’ll say, or how they’ll say it (video, song, photos, interpretive dance).

I agree with PamelaAngus - it would be so helpful to have a built-in currency converter, or even better, the option for shoppers to view Etsy in £ or € instead of $ International exchange rates are all over the place at the moment which means the value of non-American sellers' work is changing all the time on Etsy, which is a bit tricky! Hope you have fun in Berlin! If I didn't live in London I'd move there in an instant - it's such a fantastic city.

Welcome to Europe! What's going on?? Well. Watching the olympics on telly, and my hubby has prohibited me from using the sewing mashine in the sofa, he thinks it's to noisy. (picky eh??) So I am making small, silent, crocheted hearts instead. Snowy greetings from Sweden!

Such great news! Esty in Europe! From what I hear in Spain the people here don't like to buy on line?? In particular the woman 50+ I don't think etsy has really taken off here (buyer wise) but I think it would be a whole different story if it was available in Spanish. Then (for my part) I would feel able to promote my etsy shop here in Madrid rather than focusing on a foreign etsy market. Can't wait to hear more :) Olivia

Here in Sydney we have a German exchange student living with our family for 2 years. She has escaped the snow in Hamburg, and is sweating through an Australian summer :) Her stories about Europe are fascinating, I love the history and culture - can't wait to look out for new Etsy sellers from Europe, and see what they have to offer!!

When you're an European Etsian you take part in all the news about craft markets, latest news of the blogosphere, you get linked with all those great professional handmade blogs and still can't fully participate. Simply because it all takes place across the ocean. Could you please shift all these things over here? We could use some of that professional and yet likeable U.S. craft spirit. Though with Belgian roots I now live in Spain. Let me tell you how glad I am that Etsy is gaining acquaintance in Europe; It seems like a big step for the American buyers to buy from a Europe based shop, and unfortunately that hesitation reflects on the number of buyers. For most Americans Europe is far away and that is very understandable. Therefore, if Etsy gets bigger in Europe with an increasing number of European buyers, our (I mean the European sellers) chances to sell get better too. Just like Europe is at the other side of the ocean for Americans, it is exactly the same the other way around. So thank you very much for expanding the Etsy business in Europe, and for improving everyone's chances to get on the market.

I wish that as much money and effort were put into making the etsy selling experience less tedious and clunky. Why does Etsy not have a coupon feature during checkout? Why is the functionality of fewer clicks per action come from Greasemonkey etsyhacks and not the site itself? Why is the spambot on the convo system still set to stop anyone from sending more than 20 messages in rapid succession, such as shipped product notices? Why doesn't the "shipped" box on the orders page send an automatic message to the customer when an item is marked shipped? Instead you leave the seller to do this manually and get hit by the spambot if they were fortunate enough to ship more than 20 items that day. Customer service takes 2-4 days to restore a seller's convo privilege that was taken away during legitimate business. LOL, they helped me by telling me to use email instead. Why is customer service still so slow and yet you can afford to go to europe? Why is there no batch edit feature for prices or listing content? You can change your shipping profile but you have to add it manually to EVERY item. These are just a few things that make Etsy far more difficult to use than Artfire. Artfire has spent a lot of time improving it's seller (and buyer) experience, while Etsy has done nothing in that department in 2 years. While you spend on the glitzy and warm and fuzzy experience here at Etsy, Artfire is growing and offering more, for less. Thanks! Stacey

When I sold on the Bay, 90% of my customers were from Europe and the UK. I've always been sad not to have that same interaction with customers around the world here on Etsy. Hopefully soon that will change. :-)
