Corra of Corrabelle always knew she wanted to be her own boss; she never dreamed it would happen via an online venue like Etsy. After setting up shop and waiting six months for her first sale, Corrabelle began to flourish. Corra is now the successful owner of two Etsy shops and recently married the man behind NerdNook. Keep reading to learn why she planned her business around Canada’s “slot of doom” and why excellent customer service is her best marketing advice.
How did you originally get into the business of making things?
I’ve always been fairly creative and was raised in a very creative household, so I don’t actually remember the first thing I created, or even the first creation that I sold. My mom tells me that I used to sell my drawings out of the back of a wagon in our front yard (which I vaguely remember). The first time I started making some decent pocket change was in junior high and high school. I would make all sorts of things, from beaded jewellery to crocheted hacky sacks. Some kids even had me draw temporary tattoos on their arms with micron pens, embellishing them with the names of their latest crush.
Tell us about your previous working situation.
I’d worked at quite a variety of jobs, from retail and food service to daycare. I was working at a daycare center full time when I decided to quit and become my own boss.
When you first started selling on Etsy, did you have dreams or goals of eventually quitting your day job?
I’ve always had the goal of one day being able to be my own boss. I really wanted to be able to stay home with my children, and it was really important to me that I’d be able to support them on my own. (I was a single mom at the time.) I had no idea that I’d be able to do it through online sales. I was picturing something more “brick and mortar,” but this is actually much better for where I am in life, currently.
The first time I saw Etsy I think my heart nearly stopped. How had I not heard about this? I had been selling my artwork on eBay for a couple of years, but the site is not artist friendly and the fees were pretty high. I really liked how Etsy allowed each seller to have their own shop without having to pay an extra fee. Of course, the biggest draw for me was that Etsy was made precisely for selling handmade goods. I joined the day that I stumbled upon it. I quickly uploaded one of my most recent creations, a little pin cushion, and then let it sit. I thought I would see how that would go, and then maybe list more. Six months went by before the pin cushion sold, and honestly, I had sort of forgotten about it. I was excited to see that it had sold and decided to give it another go, but this time with a little more passion. I started listing more frequently and the business sort of snowballed.
Did you do anything to prepare ahead of time? Feel free to give us the nitty gritty business details.
I’ve been very cautious and haven’t made any major decisions without careful planning and a lot of thought. I jumped in with both feet, but I was at a point in my life where I was out of other options. I had thought about this for a long time, and this was really the best thing for myself and my kids.
Once business picked up I made more of a plan, put up Shop Policies and carefully researched shipping prices and local business laws. I deliberately created my entire product line (and still do) based on Canada Post’s 2cm rule. (Something we Canadian sellers have dubbed “the slot of doom.”) Everything over 2 centimetres thick is charged quite a bit more for shipping, regardless of whether the item is lightweight or not. I knew that if I had lower shipping prices I’d have a better chance of actually selling my items. It’s already hard enough to compete with USPS’s fantastically low shipping fees.
What are the most effective ways you have promoted and marketed your Etsy business? What’s your best marketing tip?
It’s really important to have good customer service because word of mouth goes a long way! For a really long time (up until last year, actually) I had no other form of advertising and was already about as busy with Etsy orders as I could handle. I knew my buyers were referred by other buyers because they’d tell me how they heard about my shop.
It wasn’t really until the recession hit (and the American dollar wasn’t worth as much in Canadian dollars) that I finally started advertising. I started running blog promotions, posting on Flickr and advertising locally as well. Still, the majority of my sales are from word of mouth.
What have you found to be an unsuccessful promotion? Have you made any business choices you regret?
I don’t really have any regrets. Most of my efforts have been fairly successful. There are a few areas for promotion that I simply don’t have the time for, like social networking with constant updating. I still don’t really get Twitter. I have an account, and yes, I’ve “tweeted,” but it just doesn’t do it for me. I don’t think that I’ve ever gotten a sale as a result of any of my tweets. It’s a rather time-consuming form of advertising, I think. It might be fantastic for some people, but honestly I’d rather be creating!
Walk us through your typical workday.
- Rise and shine, coffee, and then breakfast with the kids.
- Start my kids with their school work at the table. I homeschool my two boys, ages 6 and 7.
- Check Convos and emails, carve out non-personalized orders.
- Lunch!
- Reading with the kids, followed by siesta time for them, work time for me. This is design time. I sketch out custom and personalized orders or new stamp ideas.
- Package orders and take my afternoon walk/trip to the post office, as mail is not picked up here — we have to take everything to the post office, both local and international mail.
- Dinner and housework.
- Family time.
- Bedtime for the kids, more work for me. I usually use the evenings to answer Convos and emails that I didn’t get a chance to answer earlier. I get most of my creative bursts late at night, so that’s the time that I do most of my illustrations for my other shop or design new stamps.
What do you enjoy most about not having a day job? Is there anything you miss?
I LOVE the flexibility of working at home and on my own schedule. It allows me to change my plans at the drop of a hat, knowing that I can pick up later in the evening wherever I left off. I especially love that I can be home with my kids. That’s the biggest prize for me. The only part I really miss is being able to see customers face-to-face. That’s the fun part of selling your work: being able to communicate in person with your buyers. I really like selling at local markets for this reason.
What’s the hardest part about running your own business?
Sometimes I find it really hard to keep work separate from home life. When you have a day job outside of the home, it’s a lot easier to leave work AT work. However, when it’s in your home, it’s everywhere — not just mentally, but physically! The amount of space that supplies take up is pretty mind-boggling. Thank goodness that I have an actual studio space now where I can just close the door when I’m not working.
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself? What advice would you give someone else?
Carefully research your target market. Is there one? Is it flooded, and if so, is your product unique enough to be noticed? Last but not least, can you charge enough that you can pay yourself fairly and still sell? There are a lot of other things that I really do enjoy making, but they aren’t right for online sales. The market is either really full already, or they take so much time that If I did charge myself fairly, they simply wouldn’t sell!
What goals do you have in store for the future of your business?
I’m really happy where I am right now! I want to continue what I’m doing and expand slightly. I’d like to start focusing more on my illustrations, making blockprints, and possibly start having my stamps laser cut. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love hand-carving my rubber stamps. I do have carpel tunnel, though, and my wrists will only last so long! My favourite part of making a stamp is the design process, the sketching, and seeing it both in the negative/positive formats. I don’t think that I’ll ever completely drop rubber stamps and linoleum blocks. I’d also really like to have a physical shop of my own one day and offer evening art classes taught by local artists.
Have any favorite Etsy shops we should know about?
I’m a huge fan of BrookeArin, Momomadeit, TheBusyMom, BCharmer, and of course, NerdNook. (I MARRIED that nerd last month!)
Is there anything else you would like to share?
- Don’t put money into your business that you don’t already have. Start small and be realistic.
- Keep your shop freshly updated.
- Make sure that your pictures are clear and your listings are detailed (measurements, etc).
- Be sure you have some Shop Policies in order before you start selling. You may decide to change then later and that’s okay. It’s better to go in with some policies rather than none at all.
- Have an informative Profile. People want to know who you are and where you are! Your location is important information.
- Be original! Don’t copy other peoples’ hard work, and don’t be discouraged or terribly surprised by people who take your ideas and run with them. Unfortunately, this is just the reality of the online marketplace. Be sure to handle it professionally, keep creating and don’t let it kill your spirit.

Beautiful stamps and a great story! Congratulations on your successs. Ha ha, the Canada Post employees thought I was a real weirdo when I called their plastic guide the slot of doom. After making up wedding invitations, my sister spent time smashing all the fabric bows with a mallet, because they would have been twice as expensive to ship to the guests, the thickness made the difference between costs for a regular and a large envelope.

Oh my, I didn't realize people were still commenting on this! I haven't had a chance to read them all yet, but thank you! The bird inspiration comes from my grandma. She knew everything there was to know about birds, their different songs, their mating patterns, how they liked to nest, where they'd nest, and best of all, how to paint them, beautifully. I remember sitting on her lap as a little girl, and she would show me tiny details about birds that often go un noticed. The color of their skin on their tiny feet, and the color of their beak (not too many birds in Kansas actually have yellow/orange beaks!) and so on. She taught me how draw the angle of a birds little legs, when standing and when flying, same with the tail and their wings. She always had birds of her own, and blue bird houses all over her farm. We would go on afternoon drives, simply to look and see what might have moved in:) I know birds are sort of "in" right now, so that's neat. For me it's a lot more than just a trendy thing. I think of my grandma when I create birds, and the way she used to be. She's got dementia (sp?) now, and doesn't remember a lot, which breaks my heart. My kids never really got to know her the way that I knew her, which is so sad. Luckily though, her daughter, my mother, is just as stellar of a grandma as she was! She always took extra time with me when I was little, to help me learn different artisitic areas, and was really patient. She's the same way with my boys;)

Dear Corra, really thank you for this post. Its really very encouraging to hear all this information said by an experienced seller. I've recently setup my shop, and I'm constantly hoping someone will see my work and buy it. Getting a Heart for my pieces makes my day too. I really admired how you could take things so easily. =) This is a learning piece of article, really appreciate it. Oh, and its really cute to know that you are married to the nerd nook. =D

I am a new Etsy Shop owner. I was feeling a little down about shop sells until I read your article. I have had a few but honestly only one person did not already buy cards from me before. I am just in love with your little trailer stamp. That is just too cute! Do you trade handmade crafts? If so I would sure be interested in doing so with you. Thank you for sharing your wisdom~ Sherry

I loved the interview! Very realistic and encouraging for any artist who's trying to make it in the retail world. I especially love the tip of not investing the $ you don't have. It's true that you need to grow with your business. I also love that you're taking the time to homeschool your two children. My husband and I did the same and we've not regreted it one bit. It was sometimes a bit difficult to juggle everything, but so worth it in the end. Our children are both in their 20's and married now and we still share a very close bond that I wouldn't trade for anything. I love your work! I hope my comments are as encouraging for you as your interview was for me. Congratulations on a beautiful success story! :)

I love your stamps Corra! Hand-cut lino blocks have their charm but I can understand the interest in switching to laser cut stamps as wrist and hand problems are the pits. Congrats on your success!

What an awesome post! I really liked the tone of this post, it's so friendly. Many congratulations to corabelle for getting featured and loads of good luck for everything. My favourite part of this post: "There are a lot of other things that I really do enjoy making, but they aren’t right for online sales. The market is either really full already, or they take so much time that If I did charge myself fairly, they simply wouldn’t sell!" Tell me about it. :D

Thank you SO much for sharing your story & tips!! I haven't taken the plunge yet but reading about your Etsy journey has really taken my anxiety level waaaay down, especially the fact that word of mouth is THE best form of advertising. I, too, am not into the social networking thing, which I thought had to be an essential part of having a successful shop - what a huge relief to find out that your work pretty much speaks for itself & terrific customer service are the REAL keys to success, two things I know I can deliver on a consistent basis. So thanks again Corra, for sharing your personal story & proven tips :)

I was very happy to come upon this shop, which led me to this article. such sage advice and so well written. i would like to mention one thing that has been on my mind. Advice was given on this, but I have a bit of a twist. My niche was small when I began making kusudama flowers. I checked Etsy after I learned to fold these pretty creations. There are a lot more people doing ths now than when I began. sometimes I find that I think of a folding paper idea and make it and list it and someone else has the same or similar idea. I do NOT copy ideas from others, but sometimes the similarities are obvious when I search out other paper shops. I oftentimes wonder if I should remove my listed item? but kusudama flowers are folded one way and lots of artisans are creating them now. Lots to consider in this Etsy business. Thanks for the great article.
