Today’s Quit Your Day Job feature is a story of overcoming hurdles. Colleen of loopyboopy is a stellar example of someone who, with the help of Etsy and hard work, has turned a basket of metaphorical lemons into a sweet pitcher of lemonade. Colleen previously owned and operated a barber shop, but after a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis she found herself unable to continue with the position she had on her feet. Colleen took the circumstances as an opportunity to work out of her home by making and selling art dolls and fulfilling her artistic passion. She’s once again bringing in the second income her family needs, says she wouldn’t change a thing, and advises that her best marketing strategy is in being true to herself in what she creates.
How did you originally get into the business of making things?
I’ve always felt compelled to create. It’s just part of who I am and what I do. I grew up on a farm in rural Michigan. My mother was a potter in the ’70s and she had a studio in one of our barns. I remember playing with her clay, her potter’s wheel and glazes. I loved the feel of the clay squishing between my fingers. Even then I made creepy little head beads that my mother would sell when she went to craft fairs. Over the years I’ve always had my hands in some kind of art project, drawing, painting, and sewing. Clay and sculpting have always been what feels most natural as a means of expressing myself through art.
When I was 30 I moved from Detroit to New Orleans. I had come to the city on vacation and immediately fell in love. I essentially never returned to the North other than to get my belongings and to wrap up some business. This move was the catalyst in becoming the artist I am today. New Orleans is such an inspiring place to be — the music, food, people, rich history, and architecture are all so supportive and conducive to a creative spirit. Never before had I felt so connected to a place and a community. I think being so settled in my surroundings allowed me to finally listen to and indulge my creative muse, and this is when I began to take my art more seriously.
Tell us about your previous working situation.
I previously owned and operated a barber shop in Detroit. When I moved to New Orleans I got a great job in a busy little neighborhood barber shop, where I made a fantastic living. I was creating in my off hours, placing some of my work in local galleries and selling a bit on eBay.
I met and married my darling husband, Lee, and we had our only child, NoraLeigh, who is now 10. I was really pretty content with my life. Of course, as you know, life will throw you a curve ball when you least expect it. I began to experience joint pains, which I soon learned were symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Within just a few years I had the chronic and painful disease full blown and could no longer work as a barber, or outside of the house for that matter. Lee also works for himself as a contract painter, and, though his income was good and pretty steady, we still needed a second income to get by. I was now jobless, in constant pain, and my family was broke. It was a very difficult time for me and my family.

When you first started selling on Etsy, did you have dreams or goals of eventually quitting your day job?
My situation is a bit different, as I didn’t actually make the decision to quit my job: rather I was forced to and faced with the task of finding another source of income. My illness created a daunting challenge: find a way to earn money without leaving the house.
If there was anything positive about being home-bound it was that I got to create. I know I’m blessed that the arthritis is only in my knees and ankles, and not my hands or fingers, allowing me to continue my love of sculpting. Some days I can’t walk but I can sculpt every day. For that I am thankful.
In this interim I spent a lot of time making art, which was great therapy for me physically and mentally. I was still selling some of my work on eBay but eventually learned of Etsy. Once I started listing my work here there was no turning back. I didn’t have immediate success with my Etsy shop but enough so that I realized that, if I worked hard enough, I could make the second income my family needed by selling my art on Etsy, which has now become a reality.
Did you do anything to prepare ahead of time?
With my situation I had to dive in head first. We all know the saying “when life hands you lemons…” Well, I felt like life handed me a big ol’ basket of lemons and I was feeling pretty sour about it. With the discovery of Etsy and a lot of hard work, today I feel pretty happy and accomplished that I’ve turned those lemons into a giant, frosty and sweet pitcher of lemonade. I can’t say I could have done so without Etsy. Every day I do exactly what I love and I help to support my family in doing so. What more could a gal ask for?
What are the most effective ways you have promoted and marketed your Etsy business?
- All of the promotion I do is on the computer; like most, I use Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and I have a blog. It’s all about networking, getting your images and work in front of the people interested in what you are doing. Every link I put out there is a possible new customer.
- It’s important to spend marketing time wisely, finding your target market and focusing in those areas. I realize there is a pretty narrow market for my dolls and I try to find and connect with those people.
- I also have an email newsletter, which has proven to be very effective.
- I’ve submitted work and have been published in a few art doll magazines and continue to seek out this type of promotion.
- I am a co-leader and member of the very active art doll Team, ADO. Being involved with a specialized and effective Team can be a great way to promote your work as well as connect with others in your area of art.
I know it sounds so cliché, but my best marketing tip would be to be true to yourself in what you create. Be unique and original. Believe wholeheartedly in what you do. If I had a nickel for every time someone said my dolls were ugly — well, quite frankly, I wouldn’t have to sell on Etsy. I love what I do and I think that comes through in my work. I’m thankful to my customers and those who “get” me and my art.
What have you found to be an unsuccessful promotion?
I can’t say I’ve had an unsuccessful promotional experience that I’m aware of. I guess I would reiterate to not waste your time promoting everywhere and anywhere. Find your target market and put all your efforts in these areas.
Walk us through your typical workday.
- I wake up around 7:30 and start a pot of coffee. Nothing happens in the Loopy house until I’ve had a cup or two of very strong chicory coffee.
- I get my little squid, NoraLeigh, off to school.
- I take some time to stretch and try to get moving. Some days I’m not able to work and it can be very frustrating. I’d always been a go-getter, working, moving, and being productive in some way. I’ve really had to learn how to slow down. On these days I’ll cozy up on the couch with a good book or movie and just try to be gentle with myself.
- Next I do my computer work, answer emails, Team business, etc.
- My studio is in my home so around 8:30 or 9 I settle in to begin working. I like to either listen to the radio or watch television while working. I must admit to the guilty pleasure of watching crime show reruns while working, but please don’t tell anyone.
- I rotate days: sculpting one day, painting and dressing the next. Once I’ve finished a couple of pieces I do my listings on Etsy.
- I go to the post office once or twice a week so on those days I do my packaging first thing in the morning. My sister who also sells her funky clothing on Etsy (avantegarb) lives just around the corner from us, so if I’m not able to go to the post office she will take my packages for me on her way.
- Lee comes home for lunch around noon and we get to have a bit of adult conversation without the little one interrupting.
- After lunch it’s back to work. NoraLiegh comes home from school at 3:30, so that is the end of my work day.
- We live in a pretty hip neighborhood with galleries and coffee shops just around the corner, so we usually try to get out and go for a stroll, have a gelato or snowball, and take the dog to the park. After a day of solitude it’s nice to get out to reconnect with the world a bit.
- Around 5 Lee comes home from work and then what I call my second job begins: picking up the house, making dinner, homework, baths (as hard a job as I do in an entire day).
- 9 or 10 is bedtime, (hopefully) followed by a good night’s sleep so I can wake up and do it all over again tomorrow.

What do you enjoy most about not having a day job? Is there anything you miss?
Every morning when I open my eyes I love the fact that I don’t have to put on a monkey suit and go anywhere: I don’t even have to get out of my pajamas if I don’t want to. I love that I am my own boss and the success I experience is completely within my power and the direct result of my efforts. If I want to take a day off and go to the museum or take a stroll through the French Quarter I don’t have to ask someone for a day off to do so. I really can’t imagine ever going back to a job where I am told what to do and when.
I do miss the socialization of going to a workplace — it can get a bit lonely working at home by yourself. As a barber I talked and interacted with many different people all day long, and I do miss meeting new people. I fear I’ve turned into a bit of a recluse in my older age and I think my job isn’t helping. For this reason I do appreciate the online artistic community I’ve become a part of through Etsy, and do very much love the cyber friendships I have made. I also try to make it a point to get out and meet face to face with my neighbors and community. Having a steady income is also something I miss. Online sales can be so sporadic and it’s a challenge to learn to budget yourself for those down times. Let’s just say we eat lots of pasta and hamburgers in the summer months.
What’s the hardest part about running your own business?
Because art was always something I did for fun, it can be difficult at times to treat it as a job. Some days I don’t want to make what I know will sell but would like to try something new. Some days I don’t want to make anything at all. Creating art is such a joy for me, but when I feel forced to do it, a bit of that joy is diminished and it can start to feel like a “day job.” It’s still, of course, the only job I would ever want. Believe me, I’m not complaining, but I would say that was the hardest part of running my own business.
I also struggle with time management, but this is nothing new. I’ve always struggled with time management. I am easily distracted and I have to really force myself to stay focused on the task at hand. It’s harder to do when there isn’t someone standing over you. Sometimes a break is in order and I make myself get out of the house, take a stroll to the coffee shop or walk the dog. This usually helps me to refocus and I find I’m more productive if I give myself these little breaks.
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself?
I don’t really think like this in terms of changing the past. Perhaps I would advise myself to be patient. I believe that every mistake and decision that we’ve made, every experience we’ve had is what makes us who we are today. Sure, I dream of being a world famous artist, living in a mansion on St. Charles Avenue, and complete financial security, but it’s all of the things I’ve learned and experienced in the past that are going to get me there. So to answer the question, I wouldn’t change a thing.
What goals do you wish to accomplish in the coming year for your Etsy business?
I’m currently saving my pennies for a good printer so I can offer prints of my work. I think that would help to spread out the price points in my shop, which I feel is important to success. Mostly I’ll just continue what I’m doing: networking, building my client base, getting the LoopyBoopy name out there, and making art dolls.

Is there anything else you would like to share?
If you’ve read my story I think you’ll have to agree that the powers that be are pushing us toward what we are to become. I had a physical job that was secure and fun, but not fulfilling to my creative self. I came down with an illness that affected my ability to do this job, but not my ability to create art. Though at the time coming down with the disease and the financial burden that resulted seemed overwhelming and insurmountable, by going in the direction life was pushing me I eventually was able to overcome and get on the right path for happiness and some success in the field of art, which is what I was meant to do. I do believe that all of life is like this. We just need to learn to follow the signs.
I’ll end with a quote from one of my favorite authors, Paulo Coelho:
“Trust and start walking. We are not alone in the dark; our path will unfold as we move.”

what a great story! Loopyboopy, I admire your perspective (I need to follow you) and I love your dolls! I had suffered a long time (what was thought to be Meniere's) only to find out my workplace was making me very ill (tons of mold). I quit after realizing my health was more important than a "stable government job." (and most of my pay was going to medical bills anyway) I've been struggling with trying to find direction - always been a crafter and artist but had to push it aside. I'm so glad there's a place like Etsy for all of us, in any situation, and in every place of the world!

Collen thank you for expressing your process so earnestly; You touched on many points that I think we all feel and face within our own artistic process-while each of our processes may be as unique as the work we make, we can take solice in the fact that as artists, we identify with the desires & successes, self-doubt & fears of fellow artisans, and this keeps me going. I love New Orleans and spent 6 months there in 1976. Mardi Gras, Jazz Festival, beignets and chicory coffee and so much more. Beguiling dolls.

Beguiling Dolls. Earnest story. Great comments. I so dig Etsy and the blogs! So fun to hear what people are thinking and feeling. A terrific community. I love New Orleans, Collen. Cut my teeth on Bourbon St back in 1976 as a waitress during Mardi Gras. What fond memories-such magic in that town.

I must tell you even though I've browsed Etsy for many months, this is the first time I've actually read one of the interviews. And, unlike many others, I've never seen your shop, so I don't know about your dolls other than what was shown in the article. However, we are very kindred spirits. I've been struggling with ongoing health "stuff" too, like many others; but try to keep positive. I admire the disciple of your days, and the knowledge you have to pace yourself when you have a bad day. That's one of my hardest lessons to learn. Though it seems that every time I have a bad day, I am reminded that other people do too. I'm a seamstress, and when days are particularly bad, I love to just get lost in fabric. I hope I'm making sense, since today is a bad day; but just wanted to let you know that your story helped me in ways I don't even know....now, I'm going to look at your "babies"

I know your story but mine has not ended in luck yet The RA is very bad but as a soap maker my hands and wrists are telling me I need to do something else. I need my big toes fused together also since I have no cartlidge. I would love to do jewelry in addition but that does not work either. I feel just like you somedays and can't get off the couch, but the work calls, perhaps back to school for this 48 year old menopausel, sed ridden women, but I love Etsy!!!!!!

I really am scared to quit my day job. I have Myasthenia Gravis and am always dragging myself around, tired and achey. I totally relate to your story, but am not sure I have to guts to quit yet. You helped me not be so nervous about it though. Hopefully I'll be doing my art full time sooner rather than later!

What a completely inspiring story! My Mother suffered from both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis and I saw first hand how constant pain can take a toll on someone, yet you've not only managed but overcome and turned a difficult situation into a resounding success! I absolutely love your dolls, and hope I can be as strong as you in ignoring the unkind comments and keep doing what I love. My very best wishes to you and your family for a bright future! Bobbie

I love your dolls.............and your story. I too believe that all things happen for a reason and guide us on our path, if we listen. I am a divorced mother of four, (plus one giant Saint Bernard) and have been pretty much unable to go to a regular "dayjob" for a while now because someone has to take care of these babies! ;) I also have a HUGE problem with staying focused and managing my time. You're story is inspiring to me, overcoming all of those challenges! I have some physical challenges also, and it is so inspiring to me that with all of your pain, you manage to create such artistic sucess! Good Job! Thank you for giving us all your story

My hat is off to you! You not only took lemons and made lemonade - you built an entire lemonade shop! I once heard that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to what happens to you. I admire your courage and strength. I hope your business is hugely successful in every way you wish for.

I really needed to see this. I had to quit my job after I discovered I have fibromyalgia (they initially thought I had rheumatoid arthritis!), and trying to run an Etsy business when your disease sometimes will not let you get out of bed in the morning is challenging, but also liberating! I especially enjoyed hearing that I am not the only housebound Etsian who has a hard time focusing on making my best sellers - when I really want to create new things! Thanks!

Hi there, I know exactly how you feel. I am a barber who was recently diagnosed with RA and Lupus, I have tried for the last couple of years to continue working, and it has been too hard. I was fortunate enough to run a barber shop myself for a year, I knew something wasn't right when I started but I kept pushing on til I couldn't take the fatigue anymore. Your story has really inspired me!! For the last few months I have made jewelry and painted a little but I get so tired sometimes I am just not interested in anything anymore. Anyway, I absolutely love your dolls and I wish you the best for you, your health, your family and your business. Thank you so much

This is a wonderful article. I love your story and can relate in a lot of ways. I have had crippling juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in every joint in body since the age of two and am wheelchair bound. It was very difficult on not just me, but my whole family and I have been through all walks of life since then. Like you, patience is one of the biggest lessons I've had to learn as well as perseverance. The work I do, lately specializing in making rosaries, is great exercise for my hands, though takes me longer than most. Mostly I do it, though, plainly because it's something I can do from home and because I absolutely love it! I also donate part of the profits to the American Cancer society in honor of my recently deceased mother(As a child we did a lot of bead work and crafting together), which helps me give back as well!

Your story is inspirational and you have great creative talent. I also know what it is like to find yourself suddenly disabled and not able to support yourself in the "usual" way. Etsy has been a blessing for me as well and came along just when I needed it. Good for you for seeing the same for yourself.

Your story is both inspiring and motivating. I have been diagnosed with Rhuematoid Arthritis for 14 years and the last two years have been difficult. I am currently on medical leave from work and have been using this time to decompress and allow my creative muse to surface. I have been considering a change and I believe your story was the sign I have been asking for. Thanks again and many blessings for you, your family and your creative muse.

I love your work, your photos are amazing. I've been a professional photographer for over 25 years now, and have been suffering with fibromyalgia for 28. It was photography to taught me how to turn the pain level down. I see several of us here on etsy have been suffering with pain and have found the best medicine ever invented. Laughter and Creativity. Thanks for all your hard work, I love your blog, and look forward to reading all your posts.

I love sculpting, but it is an artform I rarely get to do. I agree your dolls are unique but have a distinct beauty about them. Your story is very inspiring, I am new to the whole Etsy thing. If I can find work from home that would be almost too much to ask for, as I too have debilitating health problems. I used to be in the medical field, irony.
