How did you originally get into the business of making things?
I have always loved making things, whether it was handmade cards when I was younger or a paper mobile for my son’s room. I began creating jewelry as a teenager and spent countless hours weaving together bracelets and necklaces out of the most tiny seed beads I could find.
Tell us about your previous working situation and your path to Etsy.
After years as a dental assistant, I made the decision to withdraw all of my applications to dental hygiene school, quit my job and open a clothing and accessories boutique. It was very drastic and I’m pretty sure a lot of people thought I had lost my mind. While researching lines to sell in the shop, I discovered Etsy in 2007 and loved that it allowed me to work directly with designers. After two amazing years, the birth of my son, the collapse of the economy and a significant increase in our retail space rent, I made the difficult decision to close the doors to the boutique. Verabel, my own line of jewelry, sold quite well in the shop and I was confident that I could translate the success to an online platform. Etsy naturally became my first choice for a selling venue.

Did you do anything to prepare for making the transition into full time Etsy selling?
I feel very lucky to have had the experience with my boutique. Verabel was one of our top-selling lines so I had the advantage of getting to know my customer. That said, selling online is a different beast all together. I was also committed to being a full-time mom which meant cramming photo shoots in during nap times and staying up till all hours of the night working on my site. It was a gradual process, but less than a year later, my husband was able to quit his job and I opened a studio/boutique showcasing my jewelry line.
What’s your best marketing tip?
I relist and renew daily when I can’t add new products. I have found this to be quite effective and well worth the investment.

What’s been your most popular line to date?
Without a doubt, our Vintage Art Lockets. My latest project has been a collaboration with artist/designer, Alyson Fox. We are featuring her incredible, original illustrations and textile designs on our vintage lockets. The response has been overwhelming! We’re having an amazing time working together and look forward to expanding the line.
Any regrets thus far?
When I look back on some of my photographs from the beginning, I’m shocked I sold anything! But I truly don’t have any regrets. I just keep learning and working to improve things.
What is the biggest challenge you face during your daily schedule?
I feel like I’m always racing against the clock and I have some serious workaholic tendencies. I try to make a conscious effort to ration my time as not to neglect my family, friends and myself.
What do you enjoy most about not having a day job?
I love everything about not having a typical day job. Even though my time is often limited, I own it. That sense of freedom is priceless. I definitely have moments of frustration because you can’t really “turn off” when you work for yourself, but overall, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself or someone considering a similar path?
I wish I would have started selling on Etsy a long time ago! My only business advice is to be prepared to work long hours. This type of business does not happen on its own and you have to be committed to putting in some serious time.
What goals do you have in store for the future of your business?
Right now I’m very excited to be working with Alyson Fox on the Art Locket collaboration and I can’t wait to see where that goes. I also have a few more tricks up my sleeve before I decide to slow down. I love taking classes and learning new techniques — after the holidays, I plan on learning lost-wax casting.

Have any favorite Etsy shops we should know about?
Emily Ryan is my absolute favorite designer. She lives here in Portland and manages her own production. I have several of her pieces and I live in them.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
One of my closest friends sent me a quote that I think is quite fitting: “Work joyfully and peacefully, knowing that right thoughts and right efforts will inevitably bring about right results.” — James Allen
Thanks to Leeann for sharing her Etsy story. You can see some of her work in the Seller’s Items below.

I enjoyed your interview. I was wondering though, what exactly do you mean when you said, you "relist and renew daily when you do not have any new products." Does that mean you deactivate an item, then reactivate it?

Absolutely beautiful work. Congratulations. I've been creating jewellery for a couple of years now...on a full-time basis...but haven't sold much on etsy. I do make antler jewellery using Canada's northern Moose and Caribou antler. I even have dyed it using food colouring. Check out my shop and see for yourself. I do sell to a few stores here and tourists really love the uniqueness of my wares. You inspire me to continue...thank you...what gorgeous eyes you have....
