Noelle of the well-known screen-printed clothing and accessories shop, Xenotees, left her “daily grind” status in the dust after setting up on Etsy and hasn’t looked back since. Her professional background in photography, customer service, graphic design, claims analysis, and screen printing has helped make her Etsy shop a success. Noelle now spends her days making her own hours, exploring the latest ways to network and promote her shop, and setting aside time to keep healthy, both physically and mentally. Find out what on-site Etsy resources and other marketing tips Noelle uses to keep her shop in top shape in the interview below.
How did you originally get into the business of making things?
I’ve really been making things my whole life. It all began when I was a toddler, and a friend of the family gave me crayons so I’d stop biting my twin sister’s head! It worked, and I’ve been drawing ever since!
Tell us about your previous working situation.
Oh wow, where do I start? I’ve had so many jobs. Probably the most artistic one was working in a custom photo lab in Richmond. That was about as creative as it got. I’ve also been an administrative assistant a few times, a claims analyst, a waitress, I’ve worked as a cook (in a very awesome vegetarian restaurant), and the last job I had was as a graphic/website designer. The worst boss I ever had actually made me cry, and that was a first for me. Whew, was I glad to escape that one.
When you first started selling on Etsy, did you have dreams or goals of eventually quitting your day job?
You know, I didn’t think about it, I really didn’t know what to expect. I was already working with my husband (we have a screen printing company printing band shirts and record covers, called Monoroid) but I really felt I needed to do something with the drawings and ideas I had been working out in my sketchbook over the years. There was always that possibility that I’d have to get a “real” job again, and that was enough of a jolt to help me take the plunge. Etsy has truly helped me maintain my freedom.
Did you do anything to prepare ahead of time?
Well, I tested the waters by selling some of my shirts at a gallery called Cinders, in Brooklyn. They did pretty well, and since my sister was having success on Etsy, I thought it was about time I tried it out myself. I was so excited when I took the photos for my shop. There was actually an eclipse of the moon that night and I felt it was a good sign.
Perhaps Etsy was easier for me to get into, since my husband and I were already working together a lot, printing shirts for other people. But it was still not clear if I would have to get a job, and they were my designs that I was putting out there for the world to judge, and hopefully buy. The uncertainty in either direction can be scary, but sometimes you just have to dive in, and see what happens. I felt confident about what I designed, and I knew it would be now or never.
What are the most effective ways you have promoted and marketed your Etsy business?
Well, I’ve been selling online for over 2 years now, and the most effective ways I’ve found are:
- Facebook Fan Page
- Join an Etsy Team
- Blog Giveaways — Not only do you reach people who have never heard of your work, you also get this invaluable feedback about what you do and how people see you. I can’t say it’s ever been a disappointment to participate in a giveaway! I think it’s worth it for people to consider, even if your items are more on the high end of the pricing spectrum, you can still offer something like a $20 gift certificate to the winner.
- Ads on blogs that you love (I’ve tried and had great experiences with Lillyella, Design for Mankind, and Creature Comforts). If you find them affordable for your budget, take another look at the ones you frequent most and see if they match your tastes, it’s not necessary to rush into making a decision. I also feel like it’s a wonderful way to sponsor what the bloggers are doing! You can try one out for a month and see how you do with Google Analytics.
- There are also these wonderful sites where you advertise your portfolio, like Cosa Verde for a small fee.
- Flickr is an amazing way to market your work, especially if you have a Pro account. You can join as many groups as you like, where you can add your photos for more exposure.
- Besides all those great tools, I always make sure to read the blog post, From Etsy’s Merchandising Desk, each month, to stay on top of things. I’ll be honest, I’m not great at following trends or keeping up with holidays and this will help you do that, and maybe even provide you with some ideas for new creations. Not only that, but if you have items that can be tagged with the birthstone of the month, or a new color trend, what are you waiting for?
What have you found to be an unsuccessful promotion?
An unsuccessful promotion – Well, I suppose those would be:
- Just putting a few items in my shop on sale, but not really “advertising” that fact. That was a long time ago and I think mostly that my “not” promoting was a problem. It’s so much easier to have successful promotions with Twitter and Facebook.
- I guess my blog is a bit of an unsuccessful promotion, because I don’t keep up with it as much as a I should, but that is one of the hazards of running your own business, spreading yourself too thin.
- One business mistake I’ve made, up until about 6 months ago, was not renewing or relisting at least one item a day. For a while I didn’t realize you could renew items (um, should I be admitting that?). Etsy Hacks makes that much easier (you can renew from the item listing page). Etsy Hacks are essential tools, I don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t search “sold orders.”
Walk us through your typical workday.
That’s difficult, because I don’t really have a typical workday.
- I get up around 10 or 11 (I seem to be living on the East Coast, adhering to West Coast time) and check my Etsy shop to see if I need to respond to anyone, or relist anything.
- Then after breakfast, I might head over to the workshop to print and/or ship out orders, or I’ll stay home and work on Internet-related aspects of Xenotees, or invoicing/quoting for our other company.
- I have a hard time knowing when to quit, so I tend to spend a lot of my waking hours doing Xenotees.
- By the end of the day I do try to at least exercise, or watch a movie with my husband. It’s important to keep healthy above all else, both physically and mentally!
What do you enjoy most about not having a day job? Is there anything you miss?
Making my own hours, not being stuck with irritating people (it happens!), being able to take the day off when I need to, although that’s rare, but it’s nice! I do miss having more face-time with people, but I plan on doing more craft shows, so that should help.
What’s the hardest part about running your own business?
Long hours, the uncertainty of when and where money will be coming in to pay the bills, spreading myself too thin, and just the sheer responsibility of it all. I’ve often woken up in the middle of the night wondering if I’ve replied to someone, or remembered to order a special blank shirt for a custom order. It’s all well worth it though!
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself? What advice would you give someone else?
If I could go back in time I would advise myself to be prepared for the ebb and flow of selling online. There can definitely be dry spells, but sometimes that is just a wake-up call to reassess what you are doing.
What goals do you wish to accomplish in the coming year for your Etsy business?
This year I plan on introducing some new designs and products. Housewares are on the horizon! Some pillows, wall-hangings and possibly clocks.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
- Well, I’d just like to say that I am extremely grateful to all my customers. Where would I be without them? They are incredibly awesome and I am so thankful!
- Also, I’d like to thank Rachel from GetReadySetGo, because she helped me transform my shop from the static boring pictures I had, into dynamic, gorgeous modeled photos. She helped me realize how great my shop could be. We struck up a deal early on in my Etsy career, and we have since become wonderful friends, on top of our collaboration.
- I have met the absolute best people in the world, and in my LIFE, here on Etsy. I have said this so many times in the past few years. I especially don’t know what I would do without my friend Cat of Polarity and Uncorked. We constantly inspire and encourage each other, which is so essential, something I wish for everyone trying to make their way independently. There are SO many other people I could list. You guys know who you are, and I love you!
- Of course, I would love to thank Etsy, and everyone who works there, for creating this amazing avenue where I can pursue my dreams. I really don’t know what so many people would do without you!
Thanks to Noelle for sharing her story. You can see some of Noelle‘s clothing line in the Related Items. Check out previous Quit Your Day Job posts here.

Xenotees is one of the very few sellers here on Etsy that I've weakened enough to buy from & the entire experience was fabulous! Noelle took the time to explain to me the sizes of her t-shirts (they differ from UK sizes) & delivered to me a wonderful shirt in double-quick time! Way to go Noelle, wishing you every success for the future!

Great article and tips! I love your store, I can see why it's so popular, it's lovely. I have a question though...I have read a lot that a great way to market is through your blog but I do blog and I have google analytics set up on it and I've noticed that I only get 1 or 2 hits a day. My blog has been around almost a year. What can I do to get more traffic to it? I have an etsy badge that links to my etsy store and I talk about my store a lot on the blog. So if I could get more readers I would see how it could be beneficial. Thanks!!

You mention to renew or relist at least one item everyday, but if you list at least one new item everyday you shouldn't need to renew or relist.
