This guest post is by Amanda Steinberg, founder of DailyWorth.com. DailyWorth is a daily email about money for women — delivering practical tips, empowering ideas and the occasional kick in the pants.
You’ve started your business. You’re selling the
cutest organically sourced, hand-crafted baby teethers on earth. Your shop is launched, your blog has a few comments, the teethers are good to go and the supplies are stocked. So where are the sales? Here’s a gruesome reality to business that’s learned only through experience: Nothing sells without a lot of pavement pounding. To really sell, you have to master all aspects of marketing — and that could include some form of paid advertising.Fortunately, in today’s world of websites, blogs and e-newsletters, you have plenty of inexpensive advertising options to test. For example, you can post an ad banner on
MomMadeThat.com for as little as $1 a month! Online advertising is, in many ways, brilliant. Unlike print ads, you can measure an immediate response to your efforts. Equally useful, you can target your exact and ideal niche of customers; assuming you know who your ideal customers are, you can likely find blogs and email newsletters that already communicate with them.I sell an electronic product: a daily newsletter about finance for women called
DailyWorth. I’m currently spending upward of $1,000 a month to market it. It makes sense to me because I can earn four-times that through various revenue streams, and far more down the road (I pray!). Having paid for and evaluated the returns on more than fifteen advertising spots in the past year, here’s my advice to you:
Step 1: Establish a budget. Not sure what to spend? It’s not uncommon for businesses to spend 10% of revenue on marketing and advertising. So, if your business is earning $2,000 a month, begin by allocating $200 to online advertising.
Keep in mind that you may not see a return on this investment. Ad spending is risky. You may have to buy multiple ads before you find a venue that works for your product. If your product doesn’t have the market appeal you think it does, you may never see a return. Ad spending does not equal sales.
Step 2: Define your best customer. This is the Internet. Many of the websites we visit regularly and subscribe to already have a general sense of who we are (thanks to polls and surveys, and an emerging field called “behavioral targeting.” BT is not creepy — it just means that city dwellers will likely be served ads for Murphy beds, instead of, say, tractors). You, as an ad buyer, need to use this data and only spend money buying ads on websites that reach people you know will want to buy your product. So who is your ideal customer? Perhaps she’s between 28-36 years old, married, living outside of a major metropolitan area and likes chocolate. Or, maybe she’s 50-plus, has grown children, loves yoga and has lots of disposable income. We like buyers with disposable income.

Step 3: Make a list of 10 websites that cater to your ideal customer. Contact the owners of these websites. First, pitch a “guest blog post” (you give them content for free, and in return they link to your Etsy shop or blog). If they say no, consider buying an ad and ask for their “media kit.” This is generally a PDF or link to a list of advertising options and associated rates. Not sure where to begin?
ScoutieGirl.com and
ModishBlog.com are popular advertising venues for Etsy sellers.
Step 4: Collect and evaluate your options. Here are the two things to understand when buying ads:
- Text or banner, or both? Some websites/blogs/e-newsletters offer banner or graphic ads. You need to be Photoshop-savvy and have the ability to create compelling Photoshop ads to make use of them. They’ll ask you for specific dimensions in pixels (like 125×125), and you’ll need to know what they’re talking about. Other websites/blogs/e-newsletters offer text ads. Text ads are great because they’re easy to produce, can be read on a BlackBerry, and look like editorial. Don’t dismiss text ads even if you’re selling something visual — with the right ad copy, text ads could work for you.
- CPM: CPM means “cost per thousand.” Some advertisers set rates based on the number (in thousands) of impressions their website gets every month; in the case of e-newsletters, it’s based on the number of email addresses they send emails to regularly. How does that translate to your potential cost(s)? A website that gets 8,000 impressions per month might charge you $40 x 8 CPM (where that 8 CPM = 8,000 impressions), or $320 per month. Websites with dozens of banner spots will charge a much lower CPM or flat rate, but remember that you’re also competing with the 10 other banners so you’re vying for a limited pool of click-throughs.

Step 5: Design entertaining ads. Research what makes banner and text ads successful and why people click. If your ad under-performs, it could very well be because it’s boring. I sell advertising on DailyWorth, and I watch closely which ads attract clicks and which don’t. Your banner creative and copy have an enormous impact on performance. In a recent discussion I had with a business owner who buys ads from me, Nellie Akalp, CEO of
CorpNet.com (online incorporation services), she said that, “In today’s crowded marketplace, sometimes launching an ad banner isn’t enough. Think about forming relationships with an ad venue’s readers over time and find ways to engage them.” Experiment with contests, giveaways, and sales. Collect fans on Facebook and followers on Twitter. In other words, use ads not only to drive sales, but also to build a
platform of new virtual acquaintances that you can engage in the future.
Step 6: Deploy your ads. Popular websites can be “sold out of ad space” for months, so don’t procrastinate. It may take a few weeks or even months to see your ads roll out.
Step 7: Measure, refine, and repeat. For the ambitious, mogul-inspired sellers among us, here’s an advanced tip: After you’ve bought multiple ads, monitored performance, and acquired new sales — formulate your “cost per new customer.”
Cost per new customer = how much you spent ÷ number of new customers you acquired
So, if you spent $100 on ads and got two new customers, that’s $50 to acquire a new customer. I hope you’re developing practices to sell new products to existing customers (have a newsletter sign up page on your blog, for example), as it’s much easier to sell to an existing customer than to a new one. Your cost to acquire a new customer is a critical financial element in understanding how your business grows and reaches profitability, as you develop your advertising budget (or “ad spend” as some call it) and understand what it will really take to reach your sales goals. Renew ads with venues that perform. Consider tweaking your ad creative or don’t return to venues that don’t perform.
So tell us, where are you advertising? And is it working? How do you know? Post in the comments!

Great news for us! Thank you! In the past, I have always counted on the "word of mouth" ploy to generate new business, but in the market today with such advanced networking capability via the internet, I am spending more time trying to figure out how to generate new sales via the internet. By starting my shop on Etsy, it has helped me to get outside my box for some real thought processing about this strategy. Your article is full of more tips to consider. Thank you! As far as paid advertising, up until a couple of weeks ago, I have never paid to advertise. And my first was managing to get a couple of Showcase Category spots on Etsy. Making big steps here! I also set up a Fan Page on Facebook and considering advertising there.

I've been lucky enough to receive a lot of local press since a Hollywood movie contacted me via Etsy and bought a lot of my photos to use on their set. Local newspapers and magazines have also written about my photo exhibitions and about my new poetry book. Even been on a few covers :) I am so unsure about where to advertise and my budget is close to non-existing. I use my blog a lot to show my work & my world (http://www.afiori.com - blog) and I find that to be a good way to "advertise" for free and get the word out. BUT - my blog readers and my Etsy customers seem to be two separate groups! I've looked at lots of blogs and been offered to advertise on some sites but prices have been pretty high and I'm unsure of what I'd get in return. The only paid advertising I've done so far - except to update my shop frequently - is to place a few ads on Facebook. Some of them worked and I think it was good to be able to narrow down the target groups, but I'm not at all sure that I profited economically from it.

Thanks for this article, I am finding marketing my business a very difficult task. I have to say that blogs in general have been the best way of attracting traffic to my shop. Some of the best blogs have been very kind to featured my work and that has been so far the best marketing tool. On the other hand I have sent so many press releases to print press and so far hadn't had any real interest. You can have a very good product but if it doesn't reach the right target audience you won't make any sells. I have paid for ads as well and so far haven't got much in return. This is time for me to think of a new strategy to attract new customer. Thanks for the advice Marga

Thanks for posting that; nice and simple tips that us beginners can build off of. I've had my shop open since June of 09, but just got into paid advertising now with Project Wonderful. I also just started designing my own ads with GIMP. I was afraid to advertise before because I thought I'd have to put out a ton of money at once, but with PW I don't have to do that. I can pick exactly how much I want to spend and stop there. I like that control. So far, I've got one small ad on a blog, so it's a start. I'm not sure if it's drawn anyone to my shop yet, but I do plan on bidding on some more ad space with PW on blogs soon.

Very informative & helpful article! I may spend some $$ on advertising some day, and if so, it will definitely be on a beloved blog that also relates to vintage/art. Until then, Twitter is a pretty powerful (free) networking tool, as is blogging (free). Don't forget about Flickr (free)! Networking is the most valuable aspect to marketing. Finding like-minded people/shops & creating your own mini network/cross-advertising is my favourite way to help spread the word about what I do (sell vintage goodies & blog about the little things in life). Bonus to cross-advertising this way: meeting some pretty cool peeps. p.s. I used to own a brick & mortar shop, and spent thousands on advertising... and I found that networking was the key. I got more customers chatting up people at the local cafe, than I did with ads! :)

Thank you for the encouragement to not be put off by failed marketing attempts. I tried a couple of expensive magazine ads that were big time flops. I thought those avenues would have been right up my alley, but was wrong. It just takes time, some research, and much patience to find your niche.

WATTOonline says:
Awesome article! We are looking into doing banner advertising on related sites right now, so this gives me the incentive to go for it. Also, just a reminder to everyone that shopping local is a great advertisement, so local festivals is a fabulous way to advertise. It may be a lot of work, but so far, I've never done a show where I haven't at least made the entry fee back and I'm starting to build a local following with people asking where we'll be next. Also, though it's expensive, tradeshows can help build awareness, get you into some retail shops and many have cash and carry sections where you can sell on the spot. If you always include a business card or hangtag with your etsy shop webaddress, eventually it will lead to more sales down the road. It's painful to part with your money when you don't see immediate results, but I'm always reminding my husband/business partner, you have to spend money to make money. Good luck everyone!

VintageAndVictorian says:
If you have a unique product to sell, whether vintatge or handmade, contact magazines, newspapers, tv stations, etc., and tell them about your product and ask if they will be interested in doing a story on your product. I did --- and it worked the first time I tried. The magazine did a full page story on my vintage jewelry. That's not all, either. I ended up with a job of writing a monthly nostalgia column for that magazine. And, at the end of every column, I get to put a plug with my etsy store's address. My mama said never be afraid to ask. Just be sure you want what you ask for because you might get it. In my case, it worked right off the bat. I intend to do some more asking as soon as I can get time. My Etsy sales have been soaring (VintageAndVictorian.etsy.com).

I love Daily Worth! Great info. But now MomMakesThat is probably going to charge more than just a dollar! I tried advertising on I Heart Handmade for 1 month and got only 9 referrals. <3 <3 <3 It's really good to sign up for Google Analytics if you are going to advertise, if you don't you'll never know what is working and what isn't. You have to see it as an investment. Make it worth it! -Kerry

VintageAndVictorian says:
I always carry plenty of cards in my purse with my Etsy store's address. Since I sell vintage jewelry, I pounce on every opportunity where I see lady wearing a nice piece of jewelry, such as in the elevator, in line at the post office or grocery store, etc. I first compliment her on the piece of jewelry she's wearing, which quickly opens up the convresation. I then go right into my spill about the vintage jewelry I sell and ask if she likes old jewelry, or tell her it looks like something I sell in my store, and then I very quickly hand her a card with my Etsy address. I advertise in a trade magazine where folks with antique stors and antique malls, auction companies, etc. advertise. Those magazines are found for free in antique stores and restaurants who subscribe to the magazines. The one I advertise in is distributed throughout 5 states and goes out to thousands of people every month. The monthly fee is about $40 (and that's for an ad in color).

Great article and wonderful advice, thank you so much for sharing, Amanda! Absolutely, I took the 'target your market' straight to heart. I had done one major before, for a local chamber of commerce, paid very much (glp!) for a year of online and print presence...bawhwhwhha-not a single customer...erm..make that not even a call or an email. And did some community ads in magazines...nothing either..So I've said nope for a year and this month focusing on a monthly ad and a write up in natural awakenings, catering to eco-body-soul...just like my designs do...stay tuned:)

It is often hard to convey through the media how an item feels when you hold it in your hand. I go to art shows with my pottery and so often I hear people say that they want a coffee mug that FITS just right in their hand. I even had one lady give her "lip test" to every mug in my booth!! She found one she liked and bought one as a gift as well. (lets hope she washed it :)) I know I need to do some advertising but I'm not sure where to start. I get from this atricle it is not really where but to just start. I think that is the "kick in the pants" mentioned and what I needed. Thanks

Perfect timing for a fantastic post. I did advertise on craftcult, but I am not sure how effective that was. my Facebook fan page is also new. How do you get people to follow? Some people actually work at it: they hang out in the forums, they create treasuries, they post comments in blogs, they keep a blog and post regualrly. Tragically, many of us have to juggle between motherhood [two very energetic under 6 year olds] marriage, [last time I checked I had a husband here somewhere] and actually producing the products we absolutely m.u.s.t advertise, and we are only allowed 24 hours a day ;-}

I just revamped my blog and added ad space. I'm having a giveaway of one of my cuffs and free advertising beginning next week. I also have project wonderful on my blog. My stats were way down for blog traffic in December and January since I wasn't really maintaining my blog. So make sure when you place advertising that the blog is being actively promoted. My blog is going to attract a variety of demographics, including people who off-road...yes, there are women who off-road too. There will be an interaction between my DHs blog and mine...a his and her view of how we perceive off-roading, which should get pretty funny. I am also going to tweet my blog, visit other blogs, write articles that will be helpful, review normal food and household products. All of this to gain a wide range of traffic. I will also do interviews and future giveaways. Not only will this help my own ability to sell my product, but also whomever advertises on my blog.

Thanks for sharing your info. I've paid for a lot of advertising over the years, to no avail. I once advertised in a nationally known ladies magazine that had a readership of millions - no sales. I've advertised on an auction site that we all know - no sales. I've advertised in a newspaper for a year - no sales. I sell nice purses, jewelry and have a budget decorating book. I do better at holiday boutique sales, farmers markets, fellow employees, people I come in contact with daily. So, that's the flip side of the coin.

This is great advice! If you can find someone willing to let you help fill their "swag bags" at tradeshows then you don't even need to set up a boot and pay the entrance fee yourself. I am going to provide some mini prints for swag bags this May and I'm hoping the return will be worth it. Paid advertising is hard when you're just getting your feet wet with this whole business thing, but here's to hoping for a good return;)

I have been open for a whopping 1 week now, and have already realized the value of marketing (getting the word out). It can be frustrating when your initial social network (facebook, email contacts, etc) look at your work and say "that is really nice"... but ultimately don't make a sale. I just have to think/hope that eventually they may find an occassion to purchase something from me. If they are satisfied, they may tell another person. Never underestimate the power of word of mouth!

One thing I suggest is to really understand the online advertiser you're using. From experience I can say I wasted some really hard earned dollars because I didn't learn enough about cost per click and campaigns. Be careful and always ask for help if you're not sure. It's better to save that buck than to throw it away. Thank you for the tips, I know if I had understood some of these terms I may not have wasted some of my ad budget.

Excellent article and advice on where to start with advertising. I sent out a physical postcard at the end of October last year, offering a free ornament with any purchase in my Etsy shop, if they typed a keyword into the "note to sellers" section. The postcards cost me $32.50 for 100 (that included the shipping), postage was $28.00 = $60.50. Two days later I had a sale that paid back my postage, and within a week I had 3 sales that paid back the cost of the postcard and put me into the profit zone. Over the holiday season I had many sales from people I had sent postcards to - but only the first 4 actually typed a note into the sellers section, so I'm not sure if they reacted to the postcard, or would have come back on their own. I'm about to start online advertising, so this is a helpful article to read - I'll certainly start paying more attention to my google analytics page!
