There are obvious benefits to shopping online: Chinese leftovers, flannel robes, bedhead. Despite all this, no one can deny that it gets a little lonely. Without the company of your overly-opinionated gaggle of friends or your sudoku-focused husband, the Internet can never truly replace the joy of shopping socially. That is, until Circles and Activity Feeds.
Circles and Activity Feeds are two new features on Etsy that help you crowd-source your browsing. You may have already been keeping track of your preferred tastemakers’ Favorites, or searching for exceptional finds on their blogs, but we’re making it even easier. By adding Etsy members you know and admire to your circle, you can see what they’re up to on Etsy through your activity feed.
For shoppers, it’s a dynamic way to get an immediate snapshot of what’s happening in your corner of Etsy — newly listed items from your favorite shops or new treasury lists from people whose style you admire. If you’re a seller, you can see that you’ve just made a sale and who is favoriting which of your items.
While coding Circles and Activity Feeds, Etsy developer Kyle discovered an unexpected value of connecting to his buddies. Like many Etsy Admin, Kyle comes from a family of feline enthusiasts and had been failing in his search for the perfect holiday gift for his aunt’s tabby Fergus.
Luckily, Kyle had added Gregg, another Etsy engineer, to his circle and while browsing the recent activity of the people in his circle, Kyle saw Gregg had favorited To Scarborough Fair, a cat hat shop he’d never seen before. After clicking through to the shop and having a quick browse, Kyle found just the right hat for Fergus, which is currently en route to his aunt’s house in Connecticut!
Excited to check it out for yourself?
Here’s how to get started:
- Simply click the “Add to Circle” button on any member profile and voilà, they are in your circle.
- From someone’s profile, you can also click through to see that person’s circle. This is a fun way to see if your circles overlap or to see if there are others you might like to follow.
- You can even add people right from there, by clicking on an avatar to get an Add to Circle overlay.
- Then visit your activity feed through the link in the upper left corner of any Etsy page and see a stream of the awesome shops and items that members in your circle are discovering.

What might be really helpful is if you put SOLD ORDERS up there instead of activity feed. I would dearly love to have that as a hot link instead of having to scroll down and dig it out of the side bar. Craftopolis has a much more useful interface for shop lovers and view/heart activity. I would like to be able to remove myself from other people's circles. I am a merchant, not someone's buddy. I would like it if people had to ask me if I wanted to belong to their circles. I would politely say "no thanks" to all of them. PLEASE stop Facebooking my Etsy. I hate all this new social networking stuff, except for Teams. I find it very unprofessional in this marketplace.

A lot of wasted space on the activity feed page. I would say it needs much smaller thumbnails so more of them will fit on the page. I don't need to see my own products splashed in my face when they get favorited. As it is even on a 24 in screen only 4 of the, what do you call them, notes? are visible at a time. Way too few.

yea i checked out circles and it is working pretty cool.i as a seller can see other artist like myself and or what type of intrest my costomers have that are simalar to my products.my circle has increased a maby 50-100 etsy customers in past few hours or however this works.peace

I think the whole activity feed option is great and can see the potential for circles, etc. However, why in the world when featuring one of my sales in the activity feed would the address of my customer show up? Etsy & I promise my customers privacy, yet their address & first & last name are prominently featured. Sadly, I have turned the feature off now because my customer's privacy has been compromised. Please fix this asap.

I was very pleasantly surprised today to find emails in my inbox saying I was added to different Circles on here. I've often hoped there was a way to put a seller/buyer in a special group so that I didn't have to try to find them in my favorites. This is perfect! Also, living deep in the country I rely on my internet networking skills for most of my sales on and off of Etsy. So the more Etsy is like a social networking site the better for me! The activity feed is very useful! It is otherwise very tendious to go to every item and see who has faved it and constantly check who faved your shop and the new items in shops you've faved. Thank you Etsy, I applaud these new additions! <3

I LOVE the new Activity Feed. I don't have home Internet yet, so to add a new product I have to go to the library, but for day to day mantinence, I can use my phone. However, I can't check if anyone hearts my designs (my phone is not compatible with that feature). Now, I can easily check who hearts my products! This makes it SO much easier!

I found this last night by accident and was initially impressed. Then I added someone to my circle. They in turn had added gads of peeps to their circle thus filling up my activity feed with all of THEIR choices. Don't think I like this. Tried to take them out of my circle and no can do (at least not as far as I can tell. If anyone can tell me how to "uncircle" someone.....

I can already see where it would be useful to be able to have several circles, like you can make different friend lists on Facebook. For example, I could have an etsyFAST circle, a Handmade Louisiana circle, and maybe a larger one that encompasses both those plus others as well. Same idea as Venn diagrams, perhaps.

The activity feeds and circles are a great addition to the already great experience here at Etsy. I always liked to keep up on what the other creators that inspired me were adding to their shops and this makes it so easy, just a click! Seeing the newest listings of those who's work inspires me with one step instead of flipping back through my faves one by one and hoping for new stuff. It was already fun to be able to hit an item you liked see who else liked it and then go to their sites and faves, see who liked that and so on --like a vast jungle but fun, NOW there is a PATH through that same jungle and finding the greatest little treasures has gotten a lot easier. Thank you for this. --And to the few commentors who say "leave the social networking to the social networks" ..don't be spoil sports most folks love this and YOU CAN turn it off, you dont have to use the feature or get notices of being added to someone elses circle.

i could take it or leave it. i like simple, and this, to me is another distraction. i think 'favorites' was enough, as i don't feel like i need to know when a shop owner i like adds something to her faves. i could see how a buyer-only might like this social networking aspect, but as a busy seller, it's just to much. i would much rather have seen fundamentals (like a ship calculator) created instead.

Also means I don't have to keep going out to Treasury to see if anyone has included me lately. In the 3 months since I opened my store on Etsy I have noticed a few things I really wanted added to the website for ease of operations. It's as if the developers read my mind. This is a late reply, but I just wanted to say I absolutely love these new features! Making etsy more social was a great way to go. It increases visibility for sellers and helps buyers find new, cool things from their favorite sellers. Thank you SO MUCH, Etsy!

I love the activity feed and although a buyer has added me to her circle and I have added another seller to mine I don't really understand the benefits of the Circle. Do I also add buyers to my circle???? I must be missing something as I read through all of this. Help!

My favorites are private, and I noticed that if someone decides to add me to their circle, they can see my favorites. I'm not sure if I like that. I have my favorites private for a reason.....

My only complaint is that your circle size is limited to 1080 shops. I've recently tried adding to my circle only to receive a message saying I've reached my circle limit. Why put a limit on the size of a circle? I suppose I could "un-circle" some, but that seems rude.

Yes, the 1080 circle limitation came as a complete surprise. Etsy should provide advance warnings of a total numbers cap so that all of us could more fully pace ourselves. I agree with member lcgal that the net result of this unstated policy has caused unforseen trouble and such a cap limitation will to continue to frustrate users. I believe we are all trying to make the best use of this new feature-- and since I have reached the 1080 cap limitation I will not be able to fully participate (through my teams) in the future. The dilemma is that I will have to"un-circle friends if I am to continue. Those friends can only become angry, confused and frustrated. This is the first real disappointment I have experienced with Etsy. I encourage them to change their policy before too much damage transpires.

If not then this is a great feature with unlimited opportunties to make Etsy an even greater experience. I have found that the Circles feature allows people who do not have as much experience to gain exposure, advance and learn at a faster pace. By asking us to choose fewer people in our circles we head down a road limiting the positive aspects of the Etsy experience, This is a path I am certain will have negative consequences. At the very least it would be helpful to have a declining numbers tally available at any time. I encourage you to reexamine this policy before too much damage or havoc transpires. I really love this feature but been almost 5 days it's not letting me add anyone to my circle any more, the note pops up "darn you can't add so and so to your circle", so not sure why it's happening, would love to solve this problem soon though!! thanks

I found we have a limit so keeps me adding and removing but then others watch who I added and they add so it continues to help everyone see others shops. I try to always give hearts for shops and items to help everyone also. Fun to help everyone and build new friends.
