Six Success Secrets With the When I Grow Up Coach

daniellexo

MichelleWard_logo.jpg

Michelle Ward is also knows as The When I Grow Up Coach. She helps creative people devise the career they think they can’t have — or discover it to begin with. She works with creative types of all shapes and sizes: artists, crafters, writers, actors, comedians, photographers, dancers, and yes, even those whose creativity “just” extends to their ideas. Today she shares her secret with us.

It’s been 199 days since I released the chains, untied the rock from around my ankle, and flew the coop. That’s right — March 4, 2010 was the day that I quit my day job and became The When I Grow Up Coach full time.

Last month, I made more money as a coach than I did at my corporate job. I can’t start with any new clients until November. I was about to launch my first e-course. And, well, it was working. Once I crunched the numbers, I turned to my husband and exclaimed, “Can you believe I’m pulling this off?!” Luke smiled and responded: “Yes. Yes I can.” I smiled smally (yes, smally), secretively, warmly, quietly and said: “Me too.”

I wish I’d been told The Secret earlier, although I don’t think I would have accepted it or believed in it at the time. I absolutely would have rolled my eyes if I didn’t experience it firsthand for myself.

When I Grow Up Print by stephaniecorfee

The Secret:

Be You. Whoever that is. Be you unapologetically, authentically, quirkily, sweetly, vulnerably. Be the you who wears blue nail polish to a business meeting. Be the you who says “amazeballs” so much you’re known for it. Be the you who creates an imaginary, silly, party-hat-wearing host for a “serious” product you’re launching, and then put him on a stick and record his voice-over in a French accent. Be the you who doesn’t go for perfection, but goes for authenticity and uniqueness.

You Already Know How to Fly by craftyfanny

Trust Your Compass. Don’t know where it’s located? Check your gut, your heart, your quiet voice, your “yes,” your feelings. Check in with your brain, but not for too long. When you have a decision to make or a path to travel, see where the excitement level is along with the fear level. Things that are exciting without the fear might be really fun, but there’s probably not much to gain. Fear without excitement is, as my parents call it, the Uh-Oh Feeling. When you have a decision to make or a road to travel, head to the place that holds an almost equal amount of fear and excitement. That’s your path. Head there without too much worry, knowing you have everything to gain.

yes yes yes Print by jessgonacha

Embrace the Optimist. I used to call myself an Optimistic Pessimist, or a Pessimistic Optimist (I was never sure which). While I would expect good things to happen, I was always looking over my shoulder for The Bad Thing to nip at its heels. One day not too long ago, I stopped believing in jinxes and bad luck. I stopped waiting for the other shoe to drop. Funny thing happened: I never found the other shoe, because I decided to never look for it. Not to say that the crapballs don’t hit the fan, but when it does, I know it’s happening for a reason, and I look for the lesson to take away from it. Yes, it still sucks, but I know that because of it there’s something to to learn, to build on, to grow.

there are lots of nice people to meet by laurageorge

Surround Yourself With Love. Surround yourself with the people who are good for your heart, your spirit, your attitude, your outlook, your optimism, your support, your confidence. Surround yourself with things that mean something to you, that bring back lovely memories, that represent happiness. Go to the places that give you inspiration, that hug you in a figurative way, that make you feel lit up and at peace. And if you’re forced to be elsewhere, plot how you’re going to leave. It may take a while, but it’s better than never living in that place, with those people, surrounded by those things, at all.

Live Your Dream/Grit and Moxie by artsyville

Know What You Need and Get It. Even if it takes time (and any place worth going probably will). Even if it’s scary. Even if it’s “impossible,” or “stupid,” or not something a “responsible” adult would do, or contains other words to put in quotes. Even if your parents, your partner, your friends just don’t get it. Even if it’s a bit embarrassing. Even if it’ll confuse people and make them question the person they think they know. Not to say this is a knock-down-drag-out battle or a whimsical declaration, but once you know what you need, it’s nearly impossible to look back and not go after it without big regrets.

the journey by vol25

Enjoy Where You Are. There’s time to go further. Your life is now. The present is your present, and the future will be there tomorrow. Stop and smell the roses, and all the cliches that go with it that you know to be true.

There they are. My Secrets, which make up The Secret — not only to my current success, but to, well, my lovely, sweet, kissy, warm, amazeballs life.

Find out exactly how Michelle quit her day job — and how you can too — in her post,
I Quit My Day Job! Are You Next?

It seems like a lot of people lose sight of their dreams because they feel they have a societal obligation to act "responsibly" in their career choices. It shouldn't be so!

You guys are making my day/week/October. Thanks so much for all your kind words! @abacusbeadcreations: I know it's easier said than done, but start small! Even if you just decide to experiment (I love that word!) with being an optimist for "just" a day, it'll make a difference! @thehopetree: That's so sweet! I bet those flowers miss your lips & will be happy to receive 'em :) @SunshineandRavioli: I talk about "cranky pants" all the time, but never thought of the "happy/optimistic/dream-chasing" pants! Such a great visual. One of you amazeballs artists hop to it! Ha! @WRsCottage: Amen & hallelujah! Even though I'm The When I Grow Up Coach, "growing up" doesn't hafta be about seriousness and wearing your hair in a bun and shushing kids. It can - it needs to be! - fun and playful, too! @stephaniecorfee: I was so excited to find it, not only for obvious reasons, but for the types of careers you listed. It so goes along with my beliefs! I just love it. Oh, and you can hear the "character on a stick with a French voiceover" here: http://thedeclarationofyou.com @thewildplum: I'm SO the Fairy Goofmother! I wear that silly hat/blue fingernails proudly. Oh I just LOVE it. Everyone Else: (blush) and thank you, thank you. I'm just thrilled to be able to contribute here!

@maggiemaevintage - You're so right! It took me 2 years & 7 months to leave my day job, but it's a short amount of time when you're looking at the bigger picture. So worth it! @karleesart - OK, ya got me - I'm not totally shocked because this came directly from my journal, which was so scary for me! But I was also excited about releasing to The World at Large with the hopes that it would help others along. Also, it initially was posted as a not-as-beefy post on my blog, and it seemed to really resonate. But to see the outpouring of all these amazeballs comments, well, it's really touching for me. It's absolutely a dream come true! Oh, and I LOVE the idea of a "remember wall." SO great to keep everything you need in the forefront of your mind. @SweetEventide - Hi Jess! And it's great seeing YOU here right now. You're amazeballs. @tatteredwhimsy - Amen and hallelujah! :) @SweetandDandyVintage - "You just have to believe in yourself as a perfect creator of your reality." Dead on! @janicewd - As a actress who went to NYU & pounded (my head against) the pavement for about 10 years, I so so so know what you mean. And while coaching is now my new passion, part of the reason I decided to go into it is so I could create my own schedule and perform when I want/the opportunity arises! So no, you don't ever have to give it up, but can decide to maybe pursue it in a new way. I spent 20 years dreaming - & chasing! - of being on Broadway, and it was devastating/scary/confusing when I realized in my late 20s that it was no longer my dream. Thankfully I have a mother just like you and a wonderful support network that held me up, helped me figure it out, and encouraged me along! @miznovember - If you ever find yourself in Brooklyn, I'll take you up on that hug! :) @TheJoyofColor - That's the spirit! Seriously, I wanna eat it. @Defabricate - Well, it's so cool that so many people commented! So happy to connect with everyone here, but I think twitter will always be my boyfriend :) @VelveteenHabbit - Amen & hallelujah! And as long as you stay true to you, well then, I think you'd look back on your life with very very few regrets. @laurageorge - I LOVE your work, Laura. So funny and quirky and awesome. You're definitely a big inspiration for me, so thank you for what you do! @SweetbriarOriginals - Ohmygosh, that's so nice to hear, although I can imagine how scary a time it must be for you now. Keep your chin up & keep working on your dream/goal every day & you'll get there - promise! @julessabjewelry - Just a note that, well, I think leaps are overrated! Ha! Yes, there might be a point where you HAVE to leap (like leaving your day job), but you can prepare yourself with a big ol' safety net lying on the ground and take baby steps every day on that net until, suddenly, you find the net's gone. That's absolutely how I did it, and how I encourage my clients to make it happen. The Leap doesn't have to be so scary! @jolinne - Congrats to you, Jolinne! We're both flying free now :) @hankietankie - What song is that? I must find it! A continued thanks to everyone that comments. So happy to connect with all of you!

@servingyouart - "The When I Grow Up Coach: Getting Down To What's Important." Might be my new tagline! :) @SilkenTreasures - Exactly! Unless you are serious, naturally. Then serious it up! :) @tiemee - Oh, you're bringing out the musical theater nerd in me! Although I so don't love "Sound of Music." When "Edelweiss" comes on, I must leave the room. Blech. @AutumnJo - Funnily enough, I think "patience" and "living in the now" go hand in hand. Take it from a native New Yawker. @jessgonacha - Shut your face, lady! You're so sweet to comment here with your sweetness. I super love working with you. It's absolutely been my top favorite result in leaving my day job behind! We never could have pulled off The Declaration of You (blatant self-promotion: http://thedeclarationofyou.com) otherwise, and I'm thankful every day that you wanted to collaborate with ME! Aw, we're in love. @chriswaind - I ain't going anywhere, so when/if you need me, give a holler! I also plan on unveiling super awesome new stuff (e-books, group coaching, workshops, etc) throughout 2011, so you'll definitely hear about it first in my newsletter. Happy to have you! @bedlambeauty -Wow. Just...wow. Thank you so very, very much. @laurageorge - Right?! It's amazeballs. @sunshadow - That phrase is so visual, "snap point." I can hear it in my mind, and picture a snap pea breaking cleanly in half. Humans are definitely not meant to break that way, so I'm glad you're using it to get momentum and make sure you don't break in two! And a continued Thank You, Thank You, Thank You to everyone else here! So happy to be introduced to all of you.

Excellent. I especially love... "Be You. Whoever that is. Be you unapologetically, authentically, quirkily, sweetly, vulnerably. Be the you who wears blue nail polish to a business meeting. Be the you who says "amazeballs" so much you're known for it. Be the you who creates an imaginary, silly, party-hat-wearing host for a "serious" product you're launching, and then put him on a stick and record his voice-over in a French accent. Be the you who doesn't go for perfection, but goes for authenticity and uniqueness." I have worn blue nail polish to a meeting and even posted on my Facebook page asking if people thought it was appropriate. After all, I'm 51. I got my responses and was curious about them but in the end it didn't matter. I did it anyway... I believe whole heartedly in Be You.

Even if it's "impossible," or "stupid," or not something a "responsible" adult would do, or contains other words to put in quotes. Even if your parents, your partner, your friends just don't get it. Even if it's a bit embarrassing." Try this: Dance like nobody's watching when there a risk of being caught. I used to dance for a warmup before excercise and, since I was at home, I did whatever. My husbnad came down the stairs once and caught me and looked like me like I was an alien. He said nothing and took the look on his face right back upstairs. I LAUGHED. It was quite freeing to know I let it all out and it was seen by another living being - and I didn't burst into flame or anything. Yay!

For years, I allowed fear to hold me back, that nagging "but what if I fail? what if no one likes what I have done?" when what I know, what resonates in me, is that I need to START SOMEWHERE, nurture my love for crafts as a means for sowing bits of silly happiness in myself & others, & all will be well. No judgment needed. Thank goodness for this wild & wonderful, quirky, kind, loving & inclusive, Etsy community. I feel "A part of" now, no longer "Apart From." Peace & blessings, Roselyn

I can not believe all the continued love that's here! I wish I can respond to all y'all, but I think the Etsy server might explode if I did. I great big heartfelt THANK YOU to you all! @DoBatsEatCats - That said, I totally believe in building a big grown-up safety net so you don't feel irresponsible when it comes to take that leap. I built mine for almost 3 years! @peacoxcreations - I love that piece of advice, and absolutely agree! Thanks for adding it! @RailwayStreet - Not to negate the leap, but I have to give props to the baby steps. I'm all about it, and they make the leap, well, that less leap-like :) @artigianajewellery - From your mouth to you-know-who's ears! :) @TheDreadedBagLady - Thanks for turning me on to that book! It's so on my To Read list - looks amazeballs. @Rosalinart @EruptPrints- That would be awesometastic! Feel free to book a consultation if ya wanna talk further: https://my.timedriver.com/PJ35P @bluebirdsandblossoms - It absolutely is! Not to say that you can't be successful otherwise, but I think it's that much more of a boost when ya do. @GwenR - Suh-weet! @KnittingsMyBag - Me too! I'd love to be here on the Etsy blog more often. But feel free to come to my own blog for posts 2-3x/wk: http://whenigrowupcoach.com/blog/ @CrazyMonkeyTees - So well put - I love the "nest-of-existence." It's not what a life is meant for. @SteamPunkSteve -Oh yes, I know it well! I ask my clients, "What can you get out of your head and into your hands?" Even the tiniest thing, even 10 minutes each day, absolutely counts! @daxdesigns - Oh yes, Me Time is so key! That's when you get to do something just for you. I need some each & every week to recharge my batteries, and I've finally learned to do it guilt-free. @EmmasLittleCreations -Your kids are lucky to have such a smart Mom! @thesittingtree - I always say that when something is both scary & exciting you're on the right path! YAY for you! @Soov - Keep holding tight to your uniquity! Love it. @fairycardmaker - Thanks for describing the worst that can happen, and living through it! Sounds like you have a fantabulous attitude. I'll be dancing in my living room soon, too! @DreamAngel629 - So glad to give you that metaphorical kick in the butt :) You can do it! @DesignTamara - You can. Baby steps every day take you far! @thegiftgarden - You sound so ready/determined - love it! In keeping with my many "baby step" comments here, feel free to articulate what you need in order to feel really safe in leaving your day job in 2+ months, and then break it down into little chunks to make it happen. @cindiwalton - Thanks for bringing up the fact that day jobs can HELP you break out on your own! Without mine, I would've sunk within days. @realfaery -That's amazing! I have to ask, though, what's this "real life" you speak of? Can you find a place that the "grown-up world" & your traveling life can intersect? @TurntableArt - Mazel Tov! @Ebrown2503 - I absolutely agree, but if you use fear as a heads-up to a challenge you might face down the road, then fear can turn into a positive fairly quickly :) @Roselyn888 - You made me think of that age-old question, "Is it better to have tried and failed than to never have tried at all?" Sometimes the fear of regret is a pretty great motivator! @thisisit - Amen & hallelujah! :) @Janiesgems- Isn't it funny how we trick ourself into thinking that what we've loved for so long isn't "really" what we're "supposed" to be doing here? We're so silly that way. @sassydezigns - Please do! Spread the "amazeballs" far & wide!

I left my day job on Dec. 20, 1996 to follow my heart to California. My heart was broken, but my spirit wasn't and I continued without a (regular) day job for the next 7 years or so ... in Silicon Valley, of all places, where it was freakin' expensive. I took a temp job now and then, sold stuff on eBay, did occasional craft fairs and didn't spend enough time at the beach. I've now been laid off 4 times in the last 6 years, which is probably the universe telling me I don't need a day job. Yet I can't help but feel that I need health insurance, if nothing else, and I can't afford that expense on my own. I'm currently laid off and yes, I'm looking for a day job ... again. And now I live too far from the beach.

We shouldn't assume that "stepping outside of the boat" will make us drown. There is alot for us to learn, and we may just stay afloat! Thanks for the encouragement love simple and live simple.
